My version 3.0 (with upgrade 3.0.3) puts a 1/2 inch black line down the side of each receipt which must be cropped.
The whole story:
I have been using one form or another of NeatReceipts for a year or so as the bookkeeper for my husband's one man consulting firm. I make expense reports to use for billing his clients.
Recently my hard drive crashed and we had to reload NeatReceipts onto the new computer.
Turns out I had been using NeatWorks, an upgrade to NeatReceipts that is no longer available.
My original NeatReceipts disk is version 3.0, but a "newer version is available for download" and now I am using the 3.0.3 version of NeatReceipts.
NeatReceipts has lots of little minor annoyances that are annoying but minor. I can grit my teeth and deal with them. In fact I'm so used to them I'm not sure I can identify them.
It's the big things that have got me angry enough to write a review.
First let me get off my chest that NeatReceipts has NO SAVE button. It saves automatically as you exit the program. While somewhat scary, this is really only a problem if the program freezes up or crashes on you. Which it does with some frequency. If it freezes up or crashes on you, everything you've done since the program started up will be LOST. The only answer to this is that you have to frequently exit the program to force a save. Which brings up a minor annoyance that the program takes about 45 seconds to load. Not a long time in the grand scheme of things, but when you're used to programs taking 5 seconds or so to load, a minute delay to exit the program and come back in - and doing it frequently because THERE IS NO SAVE BUTTON it is more than a little annoying. Yet better than losing 5 hours worth of work.
I have found that calling up the HELP file can cause the program to crash. Most people call up the help file when they're already a little frustrated with a program. Add onto that the frustration of losing everything you did since you started up the software. I lost five hours of work yesterday.
When you first load the software and you are setting up the receipts folder to display which aspects of the receipt you want displayed such as Start date, end date, amount, sales tax, tax information, client, vendor, whatever, there is a three level drop down menu from which you select which options you want displayed. Every time you select an option, the whole menu closes on you, so to select or unselect the next option you have to go back through the three level drop down menu each and every time.
I was having some problems with the scanner. I was getting narrow black strips around the edges of all receipts, but a large black stripe on the bottom of full page receipts, and down one side and across the bottom of smaller receipts. When I say large, I mean 1/2 to 3/4th of an inch. And yes, I recalibrated the scanner multiple times. I think this looks pretty crappy when sending an expense report to a client, with copies of the receipts attached, all of them with 1/2 inch wide black stripes... On a full page receipt the black stripe would be bumped to the next page, as it was too big to fit on the first page, making a 1 page receipt two pages, the 2nd being blank except for the large (3/4 inch) black stripe across the top. Very unprofessional. After I crashed the program trying to find a way to crop my receipt and lost all the work I'd done, I found an "Adjust Image" option in the help file. However no such button appeared on my screen. It started appearing after I would "rescan" an image. Not after the initial scan, but if I rescanned an image the option would appear. I know it sounds crazy, but after I had rescanned multiple images the option appeared on my screen and stayed.
So I am scanning images and trying to crop them. They rarely go in perfectly straight, but NeatReceipts performs a "scanalize" where it straightens the receipt. But it still has a large black stripe across the bottom. Which you can crop off by selecting "Adjust Image." HOWEVER once go into the "Adjust Image" menu, the image you're presented to crop is the slightly crooked one. So you're trying to crop an image that is wonky. Why don't they give you the straightened one to crop??? Fine, you cut it close to eliminate the black lines. You hit the option "Keep changes" and your slightly tilted image is what you get. If you hit the "Keep changes and scanalize" option, it will straighten the image for you, and give you a long slender black triangle up one side and down the other on your image, where it tilted it slightly to make it level. If you try to "Adjust image" again, to get ride of the black triangle it just gave you when straightening your image, it will again give you a wonky crooked image to crop.
I don't want to have to crop every single image! I decided maybe I'd try and reload the old NeatWorks software. That didn't work, because I didn't have the correct key code. I decided maybe I'd unload the NeatReceipts software and use that keycode for the NeatWorks program. So I MADE A BACKUP of my data. I'm too smart to not do that, then I removed the NeatReceipts program off my computer. However the NeatWorks software I had was an upgrade, and required the NeatReceipts program to be there first. Fine. I reloaded NeatReceipts. Then I tried to restore my backup. This is the backup that I made an hour before. With the same program, the same version that I had just removed from the computer. It first checked the compatibility of the back up. Yes, it's compatible. Then I clicked "Restore" and was told, repeatedly, that the versions are incompatible. So now I've lost not only the work I did yesterday, but the additional work I redid this morning. AND of course this means what good is a back-up if that SAME PROGRAM is going to tell you it's incompatible when you try to restore it?
I am really proud of myself for not causing physical damage to myself or the computer in my distress over this, but there was much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth around here over the past couple of days.
Are there alternatives to NeatReceipts? Not that I have found. There is a thing called Shoeboxed, which, for between $30 and $50 a month I can send in hard copies of my receipts, or jpg photos of them, and someone else will scan them in, label them, and post them on the internet for me to then make expense reports out of. While NeatReceipts is more frustrating in more ways than I can say, I don't want to pay $30 a month just to have my receipts loaded on the internet.
My husband (the computer expert) explained to me the mechanics of why it does what it does, but all I got out of it was NeatReceipts is a program with poor customer support, written by some people who don't care if their customers like it or not. No one cares because there is no competition on the market, so any money that could go into improving it gets put into marketing it instead.
Did I mention I HATE NeatReceipts? But do I use it anyway? Yes. These are my angry eyes >:-( I wear them constantly when I'm using NeatReceipts.
