Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Navigon 5100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Customer Review: Real Good one to go for...
Summary: 4 Stars

Got a Navigon 5100 model. Pretty slick, in size, appearance and performance.

The directions given are very acurate and thru better routes. Tried fooling it by taking different routes, the route recalculation was done almost in no time. That was fast... Real Fast, without asking it to do it...

The two point voice alert is good one, one when you are near the turn it says that "take right / left turn in to street name in .x miles" and the second one right on the turn, which says that "turn right / left now".

The reality views in highway separations are really a good feature which stood upto its expectations.

It proved wrong on some of the things that i read in some of the reviews, like sound was not audible, brightness wasnt okay, etc. My experience with the device is wonderful and didnt find any of these problems with sound or brightness.. Infact the direction shown on the map is wonderfully color differentiated and very clear in showing the routes.

One thing that i found "true" with the other reviews, is that the points of interest doesn't bring all the retailers. Thats one thing that i feel need to be improved... Hopefully this will be updated soon thru software updates.

In all the other sections i would rate this to 5/5.

Customer Review: Very satisfied
Summary: 4 Stars

I did a lot of research before purchasing Navigon. It was a new product and I looked at the features of the product and decided to buy it, even though it would have been 'safer' to buy a Tomtom or Garmin. I have used it a lot in the last one month in more than 2-3 cities and have been VERY satisfied. Some quick notes -

Pluses:
1. Great user interface
2. Reality view is super!
3. By the way, some reviewers have said it cannot take you to an intersection. It does! They need to read the manual - it's actually very easy.
4. The windshield mount is very stable - very German.
5. Connects to the satellite very very fast. I am not able to understand why some people have written that it takes very long. I have never seen it take more than a minute and in fact have heard a Garmin customer complain that it takes a long time for her on her Garmin.

Minuses:
1. As many have said, the voice can be louder
2. The touch screen buttons are small, but they are not too bad.
3. Traffic information is mostly accurate, but it has been incorrect at times.
4. Couple of times it just hung on me and I had to 'reboot' it. I am hoping this is very rare (it may be because it runs Windows CE Core!!).

Overall, a great GPS!

Customer Review: Don't Waste Your Time Go with a Garmin.
Summary: 1 Stars

Pretty much the other reviews are correct. Dont BUY THIS UNIT

-Touch Interface - Doesn't work. Not very responsive. Very frustrating. Which is not a good thing while driving. I can't stress enough how frustrating this was.

-Real Time-Traffic - This is also crappy. I was in bad traffic and it would tell me that. I would hit OK to clear the screen and it would pop right back up. This happened for about 5 minutes straight.

-while using the GPS this thing had me go in circles a few times. get off an exit only to immediately get right back on. While ive heard of this happening on other GPS, i can CONFIRM it happened to me on this model.

-Antenna - This thing has a huge lengthy antenna wire that it wants you do put up on your windshield with suction cups. Garmin's have it built into the unit so theres a hell of a lot less clutter on your dashboard.

I had a near impossible time trying to look up a business. Garmin has a simple A-Z look up... but Navigon makes you narrow it down asap with zagats restaurants, etc.... for example Disneyland came up under attractions quickly but Knotts Berry farm didnt' come up at all. even though they are about 10 miles apart.

I still dont like it.

Customer Review: Step sideways
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this refurbished as a step up from my entry-level Magellan 3100. It has been more of a step sideways. Overall, I find the Magellan's interface better as far as programming it goes: It's easier and more responsive. The Magellan also automatically dimmed at night. The Navigon doesn't, and I find it infuriating. Some other comments:

-- I live on the NJ side of the George Washington Bridge and the vaunted real-time traffic isn't all that. Have been stuck in various jams the 5100 neglected to mention, even as it reported on other jams 10 miles away.
-- Will not stay mounted to the windshield no matter how clean the surfaces are.
-- As other reviews have noted, it sometimes lags behind where the car is.
-- The 3D display is invaluable. I also like the small window with speed and altitude. The Magellan makes you go to another screen to see those.
-- Route lists start at the beginning, no matter where in the route you are.
-- POI database is quite good.
-- You can sit in your car and "stroll" around the neighborhood by dragging the map with your thumb.
-- Helpfully tells you you're speeding by repeatedly saying "Caution!" when you're doing 60 in a 55 zone with a semi sucking on your exhaust pipe

Customer Review: Navigon 5100 two years later.
Summary: 4 Stars

Two years later, the Navigon 5100 still runs. I travel nearly 45 miles, one way, to get to work and traffic is an issue in the San Francisco Bay Area both in the morning and evening commutes. The device does a decent job of finding alternate routes to avoid traffic jams and to keep you moving along to reach your destination. The device makes you feel confident you will find your hotel during a evening drive to destinations like Monterey, CA, Fort Bragg, CA, or even Anaheim, CA.

After getting used to the interface, and many of the device's functions, you can just set a destination and go.

Nothing major, but, on few occassions, the Navigon 5100 will seem to not power up after leaving it shut down overnight. Just gently hold its power button down for over 10 to 15 seconds, and the system will start. The Navigon's window stand where you attach the Navigon device can become loose over time. You can pop out the platic cover plate, and use an allen wrench to tighten the screw. The suction cup on the other end of the stand still works, and keeps the Navigon secure at an eye-level of your choice.

Have not had a need to pay for fresh maps from the Navigon site, yet.
