Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Navigon 5100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Customer Review: Happy with Navigon 5100
Summary: 5 Stars

I have purchased this unit on Sunday after black Friday from Radishack for
$229 + tax ($18). I am so far very happy with the purchase. I have used it evryday for more than two weeks now, drove to 3-4 new places in Chicago
suburbs. So far it always worked great. I love the text-to-speech feature.
As it is so clear and nice I rarely look onto the screen.
Satellite lock is also very quick. Quite often I took a different path
in known territory and it recalculates new path pretty quick and well. You can customize it in many different ways, like disallow u-turn etc.
Also you can display altitude, expected time of arrival, speed.
It tells you on which side of the road is your destination. Surprisingly
though it idicated my home on the wrong side of a small neighbourhood street. It indicated all other destinations correctly.
I find the layout very intuitive, and was able to do almost everything,
I need to do, without consulting the document.
This is my first GPS, so I cannot compare.
In absolute term this is great. I know I cannot find anything at this
price that has tex-to-speech, traffic info, lane assistance.
I think the only negative feature is not so great POI. It knows about
a lot of small places where I would never go, but it does not know
about a lot of big chain places where I often go. It would have been nice
to have a better POI, but everything has a price tag, and this is not
my priority.

Customer Review: Between better and worser than a Garmin Nuvi
Summary: 4 Stars

Comparing to a Garmin Nuvi (Mine's 660 and their latests are 750 to 770):
* Navigon comes with a cleaner graphical interface than Nuvi.
* Response time on entering addresses goes to Nuvi. There is a five second delay on the Navigon.
* Nuvi takes the shorter way for me avoiding highways and interstates, Navigon recommends me taking one constantly including making U-Turns to go on it which takes longer. When already on my old way, it takes three UTurn passes two keep it on my old course.
* Navigon needs a TMC antenna to get the traffic data while Nuvi has one in it's cigarette lighter.
* Navigon doesn't have MSN Data Service for gasoline prices and other cooler features. Nor XM Traffic Service.
* The keyboard is smaller than Nuvi. Buy a Stylus unless you have a PDA and have one. The buttons are smaller than Nuvi.
* Navigon lets you turn on lots of features Nuvi avoids showing you on the same screen such as:
** MPH
** Altitude (Not necessary if your car doesn't fly)
** Speed Warnings (Doesn't show unless your city is a Metro oddly)
** Turn Directions shows your turn configuration
* Day/Night isn't automatic as Nuvi is. You have to touch the viewscreen to change day and night.
* Zagat isn't up to date with minor cities and missing POIs you may actually be interested in. Zagat doesn't have any software downloads for it either.
* No software updates? What if they screwed something up and needs to be fixed?

Customer Review: Just looks good ...thats all
Summary: 2 Stars

The only good thing about this unit is that it looks good.

Here are the problems.

- Speaker volume:
Extremely low quality speakers are used in this unit. i bought this unit because of voice guidance and text to speech and completely disappointed on what i got. Its very hard to hear the speaker while you are on the road driving. the speaker volume is so low (even at the highest point)that you will not be able to hear it correctly while driving. The volume amplification doesn't even increase the volume. i called the Navigon on this issue and they dont want to listen about this issue. They don't want to accept that there is a problem in this unit even though they know about it very well.

- The Directions.
The directions are good overall but some time if you are on the highway, the unit thinks that you are on the side road and starts telling you to turn left, right or even take U turn while you are on the highway. i hope this issue will at least be resolved in the upcoming map updates at least.

- My Suggestion:

After paying about 3 time of the cost of similar units with basic functionalities, my expectations were that this unit will be great. That didn't happen and the speaker issue and response from the Navigon completely disappointed me. if you want to buy this unit, make sure you are happy with its volume, you can only tell the speaker problem while driving on highway with a engine noise.

Customer Review: Great GPS with volume OK for passenger car
Summary: 4 Stars

The Navigon 5100 is a great overall GPS unit!
The concern I had, looking at other reviews, was with the volume and signal reception.
First, the volume is fine for a normal passenger car. It is just right for my Ford 500 (now Taraus). However, you would not want this for an 18 wheeler or noisy truck.
Second, The signal reception is fantastic! I put this unit, on battery, in the cup holder of my 1995 Merc Grand Marquis, under the dash, with no external antenna and got great reception. I was amazed! I have also used it indoors at my wife's office and at restaurants and reception is fine. I live in Statesville, NC (not a big town).
Love the traffic alerts, speeding warning, altitude readout (I am a Ham radio operator), and "real view" that shows lanes of traffic flow I am on and are adjacent.
The "turn by turn" directions are similar to mapquest and lets you know total travel time and miles before you start.
The points of interest feature constantly points out shopping and services nearby in real time and by name (eg Foodlion, Hampton Inn, Shopping center and so on).
The touch screen works great. I use a retracted ball point pen as I have fat fingers.
To sum up, It is a fantastic unit and I would recommend it to anyone unless you drive in a very noisy enviorment.
I am a truck driver and now use my wife's old Magellion in my 18 wheeler simply because of the volume factor. My wife loves the Navigon 5100 in her Ford 500.

Customer Review: Love this thing!
Summary: 5 Stars

I did a lot of research before purchasing this GPS unit - all of my friends said to go with a better known brand, but I can't see them doing the job this does any better.
It tells you exactly what you have to do - the voice is loud enough over music you may be playing, the directions are clear and the Zagat is a nice addition as well although I have yet to use that feature. What I did like was the traffic feature - FREE, by the way - that can help you avoid traffic situations in the cities listed. My area isn't covered my the traffic, but when I go down to NYC it is - and let me tell you it's a nice feature to have!
The only thing I would change about this unit - and it's so minor it's not even worth mentioning - is that when it recalculates, I'd like to hear that that's what it's doing. A simple "Recalculating" from the unit would be helpful. It does show you that on the screen, but I'd like to hear it as I'm not always watching the screen. Nor should I be!
I like the 2D and 3D views - and the day and night features too.
As with all of the other GPS units the points of interest are a bit "off"- some are missing or have moved from that location - but that seems to be a common issue with all GPS units.
For my money, this is the best out there. I'm glad I wasn't talked into getting "what everyone else has", because this unit does all that and more!
