Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Navigon 5100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Customer Review: Returned it...Did not perform in the Philadelphia Area
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this item because it looked good on paper. I did not want to skimp as it was a present.

Here is how it failed.
Incident one - Even when I went 3 miles off course, in an attempt to test its ability to reroute. It tried to take me back to the original course. I was only 4 miles away from my destination if I kept going straight on my current course.

Incident 2 - Told me to turn right when the road was visible on my left. As soon as I made the turn the unit instructed me to make a u-turn accross a 4 lane high way.

Incident 3 - The directions from Willow Grove PA to Langhorne were dead wrong. They should have been take PA Turn Pike east (Toll) to Route 1 North. The unit and all of its graphics instructed me to go west bound on a toll road. When I used my sound judgment and went east, it kept trying to get me to make an illegal u-turn. At the correct exit, its directions were "Route 1 south bound, to Street Road, Street Rd to Route 1 North Bound." This will take you out of the way, when you can exit directly onto the highway north bound.

If it cannot handle major highways, it is essentially useless.

Calls to the technical support were equally disappointing. They ended in the already documented "I'll have a supervisor call you back," which never happens.

The final insult, is if you lose the SD card, the unit will not function. You cannot format another card and there was no way to get a replacement part. I called Tech Support to see what would happen, and they did not know how to replace the card. This unit is too expensive to throw away when a small part goes missing.

I have heard that the 2100 is a good unit but I am not willing to trust Navigon with my money.

Customer Review: They are all somewhat correct
Summary: 2 Stars

Navigon 5100 GPS Portable Automobile NavigatorWell, I got my Navigon 5100 a couple of days ago, in a not-so-familiar city. It worked fine, as far as getting me where I wanted to go, accurately and in style. But, the screen is somewhat small for ALL the stuff they have crammed onto it. There are MANY useful features, like the traffic info, reality view, lane assist. The voice is only fair. How about a cute Aussie or Brit voice guys? Need a little help here. The speaker seems to be of LOW quality and at full volume only fairly audible (with no noise or distractions in my minivan). One annoyance is the volume keeps returning to mid-point every time you shut it off, and sometimes by itsself... NOT good! I was surprised at how readable the screen is, with all that stuff... though, some things are just not needed. The mount, as advertised, is cool - but... the unit is loose in it and it doesn't work well if you have a close windshield, like a Jeep.

Another unhip feature is no auto-shut-off when you stop the car. You have to turn it off (hold button several seconds)- meanwhile this looses your destination - then turn it back on (hold button several seconds, again!) re-program destination could be a bit easier to do with better buttons... a bit of a nuisance.

Overall, it is fun and accurate (mostly). She does get a bit dis-oriented in parking lots. The heads-up notices are nice(advance warning about turns, etc). The several minor issues can add up to annoyances over time... especially, the low volume and poor quality of the speaker. Buy one but save your receipt for a no-hassle return.

Customer Review: Better than Garmin, Tom Tom or Magellan
Summary: 5 Stars

I drive a lot on Southern California Freeways and I really need a good TPS unit and traffic service. I've used GPS devices from Garmin, Tom Tom and Magellan and the bottom line is that the Navigon 5100 works better. I got tired of paying $144 per year for traffic reports and heard about the Navigon 5100 providing FREE traffic reports for life, so I bought one.

My big complaint is that I should have bought a Navigon sooner, because not only is the traffic report free (saving $144 per year) but the unit is far easier to use and more accurate.

The Navigon is much easier to use and gives far more accurate directions to your destination. It lets you read turn by turn directions and even takes the current traffic conditions into account in figuring which route to get you to your destination fastest.

Some reviewers said that the volume is not loud enough. Either this was an old problem (which has been fixed) or these people need new hearing aids. My Navigon 5100 is plenty loud to hear the directions just fine while driving at Freeway speeds, even with the radio on.

The Navigon even lets you choose to take a different route, like when you see a traffic problem before it is on the traffic report service and it will automatically figure out that you are going a different way and redirect you.

It isn't perfect, but it sure is better than the competitors. My only complaint is that the Navigon gives you 3 choices for toll roads (allow, avoid and forbid). While this works far better than Garmin, Tom Tom or Magellan, I would prefer to have choices like allow toll road only if it saves more than 5 minutes, 10 minutes, etc.

Customer Review: A good navigation device, but not good enough
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this device after comparing many units and looking at the decent Cnet online review. I tested the device for two weeks and did a side by side comparison with the Magellan 3250. While I would recommend this device for its decent navigating abilities, I give it a mediocre score for its traffic features and for its point of interest database. In terms of navigating, it fares as good as most top of the line Garmins that I have tried out. It does take awhile for the unit to recalculate if you miss a turn. Also, the unit does have wonderful graphics and is very helpful when navigating on and off of complicated highway exits...On the flip side, I purchased this unit primarily for the free traffic feature. After I did a side by side comparison of the Magellan and Navigon, I concluded that the Navigon's traffic updates are highly inaccurate. The Magellan was far better at ideintifying traffic and accidents that the Navigon did not even detect. Therefore, the free traffic subscription was useless to me....
In terms of points of interest...it seems to have all gas stations and restaurants, but was severely lacking retail stores.... Also, the graphic interface is not as user friendly as most Garmin devices or the Magellan that I compared it to....I would recommend that the company improve the interface in future models...
This item is recommended if you are only going to use for basic navigation. However, if points of interest or the "free" traffic feauture is important to you...I would suggest lookign at the Garmin units or higher end Magellan units like the 3250 or 4250..I will be returning my Navigon 5100.

Customer Review: Great GPS
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my first GPS, and the main reason why I got it was the included Traffic. Just about any other GPS around this price required you to by an additional Traffic receiver. The traffic updates work fantasticaly, as well as the POI's.

The size is perfect that I can slip it into my pocket when I leave the car. I fortunatly have a compartment on my dashboard that this fits into very nicely. The Navigon 5100 also comes with one of the most stable windshield attachments I have ever seen. I would think that it would not work that well in smaller cars. The 5100 rotates onto it, so it has a very strong attachment, and the entire arm held tight on the window thru some very bumpy traffice. But, I did not want to advertise to anybody that I had a GPS, so I took it off soon after.

It did not come with a home charger, just the USB wire to connect to the computer. I have enough UBS chargers at home, and found the charger for my phone works well for the 5100.

If you get this, go to the Navigon website, and download their tool. It is very usefull for updating, as well as backing things up.

The one thing I am disappointed in is that Navigon is technically getting out of the US market, and only working on apps for the IPhone. They are huge in Europe, and the maps there are getting updated all of the time. There are US updates on their European website that you can purchase. Still do not have the need to update the maps as of yet.

Overall, I love my new toy!
