Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Navigon 5100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: be practical. navi(gone) Summary: 2 Stars
This is a decent unit, for people who like to be a tad bit.
Pros:
*This unit is very accurate and also has good reception in most indoor areas.
*The route planning feature is great.
*the on screen graphics like the little Mcdonald's , burger king etc(fancy) and
*last but not the least the lifetime traffic is acceptable
.... all these are great but that is it.
The cons:
*the idea is having the most efficient yet fastest way from point A to B. Yet, the route planning takes you on roads that you know are not great because of the speed limits and stop signs.
*The TMC does not reroute sometimes when it knows that there is something ahead.
*The icons are way too small.... there are 2 road display lines above the options tab making the screen display like the road itself even smaller
*I have 20..20 vision yet.... the holder vibrates making it even more difficult to read.
*as others mentioned volume is quite low.
*Recalculation if you missed a turn takes longer than my previous MIO c310x.
*The shiny chrome finish around the screen makes it harder to read if there is sunlight falling from west when you drive east or vice versa.
*The chrome is also susceptible to finger prints.
*The manual switch between night and day views is not practical. even a mio is automatic.
* The reality view picture feature is kind of stupid.... (you want to read whats on the smaller shaky screen instead of looking at the huge display signs. why would anyone do that?)
*The hardware that runs the maps is slow. when you try to pan out or move the map there is a delay before the map is refreshed in the blank spaces created because of the move.
*The hardware also causes the motion of your current position arrow to move in a very jerky motion. the cheaper c310x is much smoother.
* The lane change assist is useless.
*POIs don't show any staples or Walmart...etc.
* for a price of $350.... one expects at least a decent mid level GPS which lives up to what it says
I returned it and am currently happy with TOMTOM GO 920T... expensive but has much more than my MIO and Navigon put together

Customer Review: Would recommend Summary: 4 Stars
I read a few reviews on here and the one major problem that scared me was the speaker volume issue. Then I read a cnet review (done by professionals) and they said it was clear and loud. Well, I ordered one and I can hear the lady speak while I am driving on the highway, have my music on (not really loud, level 8) and have my defroster going (it is cold now). I can still hear her just fine with all that noise.
Pros:
-Interface easy to use and quick (mapped 440 mile trip in about 12-15 seconds and was the route i usually take)
-Re-route quick (if you go off your route)
-Window mount sturdy. Wish it could swivel b/c my unit sits slanted due to my windshield.
-Slick looking device
-Fast satellite acquisition
Cons:
-If you drive off route it won't tell you the next turn until you are at least .1 miles from it. I find that is about average but have had some Garmin devices say "recalculating route" follwed by "turn at xxx in xxx."
Biggest Con:
-Have to hold power button down for 16 seconds for unit to turn on and 8 seconds to hard off. What Navigon does not put in the user manual (nor did tech support know) was there is a standby mode. It should take 6 seconds to go on (mine is 16 no clue why) and then if you simply click the power button the screen goes off. That is some form of stand by mode. The next time you press the power button the unit comes back to life fast. To hard power off hold power button for 8 seconds and it goes completely off. I would love to see if anyone else has this issue.
I wouldn't put this as a con, you do have to tap the screen for more than a hot millisecond for it to register. Some people said they were having troubles. Well if you press really lightly really fast it wont register. If you press hard and fast, it will. I think some people are just being too light with their touch.
That cnet review I mentioned above said their unit took 10 minutes to find a satellite signal. From hard power off mine takes about 1 minute or less. From soft power standby it takes maybe 20-30 seconds if that.
If I remember I will come back after a month and post up my continued review. Right now I am very happy with the device.
Customer Review: Teutonic Revenge Summary: 2 Stars
No hand held GPS unit is perfect. At least I haven't been able to find one. But my Navigon 5100 (which replaced a Navigon 2100t) is not just weird, it's dangerous. Want an example?
1) Go to Google Maps/Directions
2) Enter Start address=4100 Northgate Blvd., Sacramento, CA
3) Enter End address=1600 Expo Parkway, Sacramento, CA
4) Mash "Get Directions."
This is how Mr. Google would have you drive from Frys Electronics in Sacramento, Caleefornia to Costco in the same burg. You don't need to do the first U-turn listed. Frys parking lot has a light.
How does the Navigon 5100 tell you to do the same trip? I'll spare you the gory details, but you will see a lot of stop signs (thereby increasing you knowledge of the local gangs "tags")--be routed the wrong way up a one way street--be told to turn on two streets with incorrect names--be forced to turn on to a street that isn't listed on your turn-by-turn list (the highlight of which is seeing a house with a yard containing more trash in it than the City Dump--really quite remarkable--see it on Google Maps)--and when you rediscover your route you will be asked to make a 540 degree "S" turn across four lanes of traffic and a set of street car tracks. This is the alleged "Optimum" routing. It's fun for the whole family!
If this were an isolated incident, I'd think about keeping this for entertainment purposes, but it isn't.
Don't get me wrong, it has its good points. For example, the free lifetime traffic and weather which announced the other night that there was "slush" on Interstate 80 outside of Roseville, CA. A quick glance at the outside temperature of 52 Degrees leads us to believe that someone visited a 7-11 and, finding the flavor of their Slurpee unpleasant, engaged in some littering.
It's quite an attractive unit and the Space Age Retro windshield stalk fits OK on the dash of my Prius. But considering I have felt it necessary to purchase a Garmin Mobile 20 from Amazon to use with my PDA so that I may actually get where I'd like to be in one piece, no matter how good it looks, the Navigon is Navi-gone.
Customer Review: Function Filled GPS for Mid Range Price Summary: 5 Stars
I have never owned a GPS device for my travel purpose and family outing I got this piece.I love this one Right out of the Box It started working and good to go.
I have read the reviews about it before I bought it people are more had pre conceived notion about it it seems may be because they have already used some other products and they are comparing with them .. But I consider this device is cool only thing is you need to play around with it to make it work to your needs.
Problems faced By others in the reviews and the Reasons for that ...
1. Charger Plugs in the Bottom.
The new product has the L shaped charger pin which goes in so it will be flat and does not have the problem of Clearance issues as mentioned in the reviews.
2. Volume is low.
I found it Ok for my preference with music on and not driving a Lexus...
There is an option which allows to set amplification levels depending on speed.
3.Too many icons in the screen causing clutter.
The reasons for this by deafault it shows around 31 ( In Old firmware) 28 ( in new firmware ) you can select what you want to be displayed on the screen.
4. The screen zooms in and out.
By deafault the systems zooms in and out depending on speed you can turn it off by settings.
I love the features on this device the reality view helps me a lot in complicated intersections.
It recalcualtes the route quick enough that you may not get lost.
TMC works great and allerts me about all the incident which are broadcasted over FM. This is when it is default you can set it to show only alerts ob route. It is provided with antenna but I havent used it yet.
The TMC jack doubles as head phone hack if some one wants to set it that way so that others need not listen to the prompting and all other things.
Especially in the night driving with kids.
It lags a bit to display turn by turn instructions if the route is long and involves many turns.
I have not tested yet various route profiles available. I will update once I check them out.
Customer Review: Good if it fits your needs Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this after using the Garmin Nuvi 350. I am traveling for work and my wife needs the other. I was very pleased with the Garmin, but wanted something with Text-to-speech without paying a lot.
The cost is great ($150 from Radio Shack). The fact that it comes with free traffic is AWESOME. It has a lot of powerful features, and keeps costs down by doing away with the bells and whistles. I don't need an MP3 player and JPG viewer for more money... just get an iPod instead.
If you are looking for the most features for the least money this is for you. If you want the best looking maps, the most frills, pay more.
The buttons can be hard to hit. Part of the problem is the size of the screen. The menus are hard to figure out, and overall it is not overly intuitive. Plan on playing with it first in order to figure it out. Once you do there are a ton of features. I also like the mount it comes with. It can go on the windshield, or there is a disc with adhesive to go on the dash. It is big, so it doesn't fold flat for easy travel like I have seen in the Tomtom. But I have it mounted so it sticks all the way out to just below my rear view mirror. I don't have to lean forward like I did with the Garmin.
The two biggest issues are the battery life and no auto-shutoff. The battery life is short. It has standby mode and then off. In standby, it comes back to life very quickly. But it seems that even though they say it uses little battery it drains very quickly even in standby. Not a big deal since I really only use it while plugged in, but still. If you turn it off completely, it takes a good amount of time to get the satellites again. As I said, there is no auto-shutoff. If your car does not turn over the cigarette lighter on its own, you can easily kill your battery. My car does, so I won't kill my car battery, but the GPS one will die also. I emailed customer service on that part. They said they are considering it for future software updates. Overall, buy if it meets your needs, but be careful because it may not.
