Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Myvu Personal Media Viewer Solo Plus Edition (MA-0495)Customer Review: Dead on Arrival Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased a video iPod a couple of months ago and really like it, so I wanted to try Myvu with it. I ordered through Amazon and it was shipped from Crutchfield; I anxiously awaited it's arrival -- it might be a good product, but beware of poor quality control.
It shipped with no user manual. I like to know all about my gadgets before I use them: what features is has, how it works, how it should behave, troubleshooting, etc. I didn't get this information with the product. I did get a Quick Start Guide which is a 5x7 sheet of paper with 4 simple steps showing how to plug in and start using the product. That was nice, it even had good pictures.
But the implication of the Quick Start Guide is that the product is ready for use -- it is not. The battery was dead. At this point I had nothing to tell me it even had a battery -- for all I knew, it got its power from my iPod. I saw nothing that would open so you could put fresh batteries -- a likely indicator that it had batteries. Also there are no power adapters included with the product to suggest there might be a rechargeable battery on board. Crutchfield later explained it this way: "Batteries are not shipped from any manufacturer fully charged, so a 2-3 hour initial charge is needed with this and all devices that use rechargeable batteries. This is actually mandated for safe shipment." So why didn't the information sent with the product say that I needed to charge the batteries before use?
Anyway, I did figure out that the extra cable would plug into the cable I had already plugged into the Myvu, and the other end of that would plug into my computer's USB port. Since I charge my iPod that way, I decided that must be the way to charge the battery. I also found the user manual on-line. It is very short, so I don't know why Myvu is too cheap to include it in the product. It verified that I could recharge the battery the way I had decided to do it, and could also recharge it using a USB wall adaptor if I owned one (I do). Charging time should take 3 hours or 2 hours depending on the method.
I left the Myvu plugged into my computer's USB port for 36 hours and it did no good. The next day, I plugged it into my wall adapter while I went to work. 12 hours later, still no juice.
After 2 emails to Crutchfield, they said they would swap it out but I'm still waiting for them to email me a return label -- we'll see how that works out. But what if the next one is also a dud? What if it works for 3 months then starts doing this? That's a lot of money to pay for something that isn't that reliable.
Also, I sent an email to Myvu; 24 hours later, there is no response. Somehow I'm not surprised since they don't even have a 1-800 number. I don't think they care much about the customer.
