Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of UltraShip 55 lb. Digital Postal Shipping & Kitchen Scale

Customer Review: Nice scale for small businesses
Summary: 5 Stars

bought this scale to use for buying postage and mailing small packages from home. So far, I haven't had any problems.

OUT OF THE BOX

Assembly was easy, just put the top of the scale on. The unit comes with a mail tube holder and letter/envelope holder, though I don't use either. They just sit on top of the unit to keep things from rolling or sliding off. This can be useful, I just haven't had the need.

OPERATION

Push the button to turn it on and then weigh the object. It's that easy! It can weigh in grams, pounds, kilograms, pounds and ounces or just ounces. To change the unit of measure, press the button on the side of the unit.

There is a hold button to keep a reading when I remove the object from the scale. I haven't found any reason to use that feature, but I suppose some people might find it useful.

The scale turns off after awhile, which can save batteries, though I use a power adapter.

DETACHABLE DISPLAY

This feature is useful if one is weighing a large box which obscures the display. To detach the display, the scale must be turned over and two hands must be used. It's a clumsy procedure, so not something anyone would want to go back and forth on. Either the display stays on or off. Going back and forth is too time-consuming.

ACCURACY

I have found that this unit is as accurate as I need it to be for Paypal postage. Haven't had any problems as of yet.

Pros:
+easy to use
+accurate
+hold feature
+includes tube holder and letter/envelope holder
+detachable display
+automatic shutoff feature
+runs on batteries or with power adapter (sold separately)

Cons:
-detaching display is a clumsy, awkward procedure

SUMMARY

This scale works well, is easy to use, is accurate and can weigh objects up to 55 lbs. It is perfect for a small business.

UPDATE: Some of the scales do come with power adapters. This listing apparently includes one. Do consider that when buying, as the power adapter is an additional cost. I myself prefer using the adapter.

Customer Review: Good so far; AC adapter is "optional"
Summary: 5 Stars

Make sure you know if you are getting the "optional" AC adapter or not, because the Product Description does not seem to tell you. I emailed Quick Supply but never heard from them. Then I clicked the "X# used & new available" link which showed me all the sellers; when you get there, click on "See all X# Featured Merchants offers" if on the bottom of this page to make sure everything is listed. Anyway, the "Comments" under each seller will tell you if the AC adapter is included. It seems to cost 2.50 more from PC_GURU (I paid 22 instead of 19). If someone got the cheaper one and still got the A/C adapter, please leave a comment.

Anyway, so far this thing is great (owned for 2 days). It is very accurate, exactly matching the weight I got at the post office (to the fractional oz), though I have not compared anything over 10 pounds yet. There is a bright blue backlight whenever something is being weighed which looks nice; there is a setting where you can turn this off if you want. There is also an auto-off setting that you can toggle. I haven't tried it on batteries yet. It comes with two accessories, one to hold envelopes and one to hold round objects. I don't see the need for the former, but the latter keeps things from rolling off the scale.

One reason I wanted to weigh at home is that by printing out your own prepaid USPS labels, you get Delivery Confirmation for free (save 75 cents). I guess after 40 packages or so, this thing will pay for itself :^)

I am still worried about how reliable this thing is over time, so I'll definitely update here if it breaks, and tell you how PC_GURU or the manufacturer was in dealing with the return.

UPDATE (after 4 days):
If you are going to use batteries (4 C-size), turn the backlight option off, as it seems to affect the accuracy slightly and the scale has some trouble returning to zero. You really don't need it and I'm sure it is a big drain on the batteries. I'm talking just a fraction of an oz here (say 0.1 to 0.2 oz off for an object under 10oz). When I compared weighing plugged-in to batteries-w/o-backlight, it came out the same.

Customer Review: Just What I Needed, Breeze to Use, Must Have for eBay, USPS, PayPal shipping
Summary: 5 Stars

I have the 75lb unit. It's the same as the 55lb unit except for the extra weight. I tend to use eBay here and there and one of the benefits of printing your labels online via FedEx, USPS, UPS, etc. is that you can take advantage of special rates that you will not get when shipping at their locations. I looked around at a few scales and decided on this one. I would say this is one of the better purchases I have made in a while. It just makes your life that much more easier. The unit is not that big, it's sleek, it comes with attachments for letters and tube holders. The batteries make the unit feel sturdier because of the added heft. The only thing I don't like is that the blue back-lit display is best viewed when you look at it "straight-on." If you are standing and looking down onto the display, you can't even see it properly so you have to crouch and look at it "eye-to-eye."

Sometimes I forget just how much 75lbs really is. I think I wasted my money on the larger unit (even though it was only a few bucks more.) I like how the buttons are nice and large and the feedback feels very nice. Construction is pretty good although it has that "plasticky" look to.

If you use this everyday all the time, I would invest in the charger for just a few bucks more. I bought the charger as well just in case but I like using batteries because they make the unit portable and, like I said earlier, make it more sturdy.

I should also note that the display does attach from the unit so that you can weigh over-sized items and still view the display from whatever angle you wish.

It's only about 3.5" inches tall so when not in use, you can store it upright and it doesn't take up much space.

It comes packaged pretty well in a nice sturdy box.

If you ship online, this item is a must-have and will save you money and improve your productivity. Highly Recommended.

Customer Review: Easy operation. Very functional. Very versatile.
Summary: 4 Stars

It came in a square box with minimal assembly required. In fact, you just need to attach the top flat portion of the scale and you are ready to go. "Battery is no included", so you have to provide your own type "C" batteries - You will need 6. I found it hard to remove the cover of the battery compartment, but nothing to fuss about. You can use an AC adapter, but you will have to buy it separately

To tell you the truth, the first thing I notice is how cheap the product looks. Mine came in silver, I probably would prefer the black. Yet there is no sure way what color you will get. What I really like about it is the simplicity of the operation, its functionality and its minimalistic design. There are only 3 buttons on the front:

- On & off
- Hold (Will hold the result for 2 minutes)
- Tare (Will deduct the weight of the container if you use one - very useful)

The other adjustment is located on the right side which cycle the units in to metric and differrent amounts.

One other thing that is very practical is the detacheable faceplate. If you have a big box, you will most likely cover the digital display which will require you to kneel to peek the display under the box. The faceplate can be extended outward with a spiral cord like the one you see on the older type of analog telephones.

Display is backlit. 55-lb capacity. Made in China.
