Customer Review: Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable Modem
Summary: 5 Stars

Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable Modem arrived within a week of ordering, free of shipping charges. The unit was very easy to install. I called my Internet ISP Comcast, after installing the unit to give them the required modem ID information and within a few minutes the unit was up and running. The lights and lettering on the front vertical panel are clearly visible. I also appreciate the button on the top that when pressed cuts the Internet traffic to the computer. This is a nice security feature. When pressed again, the Internet session resumes. I have a VOIP phone and I thought that cutting the Internet signal with that button would disable the phone modem as well. But, that did not happen. The phone works fine even with the modem button is pressed to stop the Internet signal. The upload-download speed has improved much compared to my old Comcast modem. I am no longer paying the monthly modem rental to Comcast. With the Amazon's bargain price, my break-even is just 10 months. Overall, I like this unit.

Customer Review: This Motorola modem flies!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Well, I finally decided to return my rented Motorola Surfboard SB-4220 modem that I rented for 6 years. Not because of slowdowns, but to finally own my own and not pay a monthly $3.00 fee to Comcast every month. I always thought my download speed of 6336 kbps, and upload speed of 312 kbps were within normal range. That was until I bought this Motorola Surfboard SB-5101 modem and ran speedtests from the exact same test website that I used for the rented modem.

Let me tell you... my download speed has surged to new heights with this modem. I now have download speeds of 16893 kbps, and uploads at 1221 kbps. That's more than doubled here. I should have bought this modem years ago.

Installation was a breeze too. Just a phone call to Comcast to give the MAC address and the serial number of the router. I was up & running in 15 minutes.

So if anyone else is thinkig about returning your rented modem, I can attest that this SB-5101 flies to new heights for me...

For my setup, I have my cable service from Cox, my cable modem, and an Linksys wireless router. The day my modem arrived, I took it out of the box and plugged it in. I called Cox, navigated through their automated phone menu system, and read off the MAC ID to the tech services person. He did some stuff on his end to first recognize the new cable modem. Then he had to do some other configuration on his end because of the router. Once that was done, viola! We've been using the cable modem for the past week or so without problem.

Be aware that a number of ISPs can block certain ports - this does not matter what modem you have as all are mainly DOIS compliant. This may not be a problem for you. But for some people, it can be. Before you buy and sign up for service, look around the web and make sure it's what you want. Cable people will deny they do this, but they do. And it can really mess up your experience if you are a "power user" and give you lots of trouble.

Customer Review: used modem shipped as new
Summary: 1 Stars

I thought my 3 yr old TWC cable modem was malfunctioning cuz I sometimes got a slow connection. I ordered the Motorola SB5101 [NEW, not refurbished] because of all the 5* reviews...I should have paid more attention to the 1* reviews. I connected the modem per instructions and...nothing. I called TWC and the tech told me his system showed that my Motorola had tried connecting to the internet over 100 times and had failed about 90 times! We tried the usual routine of power off/on the computer [a brand new HP Pavillion] and disconnect/reconnect/ power on/off the modem. Even though all the lights on the modem were lit up...I got nothing. I told the rep I was going to reconnect the old RCA DCM425 they had supplied me with. The TWC rep re-initialed the old modem on their side and I was back watching YouTube videos in about 2 minutes. I'd look elsewhere...such as buying it new from a bricks & mortar store. Lesson? If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Customer Review: Easy to set up and works great
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this cable modem to replace my 7 year old Toshiba modem. I was having to power cycle the Toshiba modem every other day. I think it was on its last leg. Since installing the Surfboard modem it just stays up and I no longer have to reset the modem. I am not observing any noticeable improvement in speed but this is just casual observation and not based on any scientific speed test.

I ran into a slight issue during set up but the problem corrected itself. The set up was easy but the modem didn't come up right away (i.e., didn't get four green lights on the front panel). The cable company customer service rep who registered the modem for me could not figure out why it didn't turn up. They opened a ticket to dispatch a technician next morning. But when I checked the modem a few hours later it was fully on and had four green lights. It's been working great ever since. I would highly recommend this modem.
