Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable ModemCustomer Review: You Can't Get a Better Cable Modem, but . . . Summary: 5 Stars
I've had a Motorola 5100 for about four years. It gradually got degraded and these, like all electronics, wear out and need to be taken out of service. So I bought a new 5101.
The switch was very quick and easy. I called Cox and gave them the information they needed and was online fast.
Let me tell you --- the Internet really flew! I can't tell you how thrilled I was. It made all the difference in the world.
I have a wireless network and a Linksys router. I switched out the router and modem at the same time. The speed on all my computers increased greatly and I no longer have dropped connections.
I depend on my computers for my phone calls through Skype and for my entire business. So I have to have the best and fastest, the most dependable.
I highly recommend this modem. It's reasonably priced and lasts a long time. But do keep in mind that all modems will need to be switched out at least every two or three years if you want to stay on top of things.
Update: I have learned that a number of ISPs like people to use this modem because they can block certain ports of those people who do. This may not be a problem for you. But for some people, it can be. Before you buy it, look around the web and make sure it's what you want. Cable people will deny they do this, but they do. And it can really mess up your Internet experience and give you lots of trouble.

I have been renting my old Comcast supplied modem for years and decided that was money that I could use to buy one. So, I bought this one since my next door neighbor has one and says he does not even know it's there (great praise for a piece of technology that's just supposed to work!).
I ordered it from here (it arrived two days later -- really fast), I called Comcast to get the mac address registered -- 15 minutes later, it was on.
I am paying for 6MB down-1.5MB up service and my old modem would give me 12 down/4 up (http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/) so, I was pretty happy (probably why I kept renting it for so long).
This new Motor Modem? (.....wait for it.....) 30MB down/10MB up !!!
Apparently, in the Chicago area, Comcast has just upgraded their 6MB customers to 12MB at no additional cost. Even with PowerBoost, my old modem could not make it past 12MB.
This new SB5101 does not seem to have that problem. I was considering upgrading to Comcast's 16MB service (highest Comcast supported speed with customer owned modems) for some VPN stuff that I need to do, but since purchasing this new modem delivers 30MB, what's the point? Again, more money NOT to give to Comcast.
Get this modem, like most premier technology, it's small, cheaper than renting, silent and SMOKIN fast!!
Customer Review: Motorola = Reliable Summary: 5 Stars
This was brought to replace SBG1000 as COX Communications seemed to drop DOSCIS 1.0 support overnight with no notice. We opted not to get a Cable Modem/Gateway combo this time. Cox presented us an option to get a modem from them and the choices were between Scientific Atlanta or Motorola. We chose Motorola, but when we tried to pick it up they claimed they were all out. Taking the Scientific America setup was SLOW and frequent loss of connection happened over the course of a week. Note this was a modem issue as Cable and Cox Phone service were not impacted.
We came to Amazon to find a replacement and got a GREAT Deal on the Motorola. Delivery was fast and the best part was setup was a breeze. Pretty much plug and play after a quick call to register the MAC address with COX. No long resolution time, and thus far not a single loss of signal. Just like my last Motorola, the browser interface is easy to use and allows for monitoring of critical data. The product takes a minimum of space in my wiring closet. Over all I would rate this product a must buy for anyone needing to upgrade (When your cable service provider upgrades to a DOCSIS 2.0 network system) or purchase a new modem.

Customer Review: From SB5210 to SB 5101 Summary: 4 Stars
I used to lease SB5210 from Comcast and they raised the fee to $7.00 per month since March 2011.
I decided to buy my own & return the lease one to Comcast.
I did some research and got Zoom 3541 (Docis 3.0) even though I'm not using extreme package from Comcast.
After activated w/ Comcast, internet speed boosted from 15-18MB to 21MB.
Then, this cable modem lost the signal within 30 min.
Called Comcast again to resolve the issue but never restored the signal.
I did not want to setup for an appointment for tech to come in. (too much hassle...)
So, I placed back leased one and came right back.
I returned the Zoom 5341 and bought this SB5101.
According to my research, main differences between SB5210 & SB5101 are SB5210 uses TI Chipset (SB5101 uses Broadcom) & SB5210 discontinued as of Jan 2011 (SB5101 currently on Motorola website for sale).
Called Comcast, activated the SB5101 cable modem and works fine.
I think my house has some signal issue that sometimes loose the signal & come back.
This happened even when I had SB5210.
This was not retail package as just plain brown w/o any prints on the box.
However, the units seems to be clean, never used and works fine.
Overall, this SB5101 cable modem was a good buy to save money.
Customer Review: Be careful buying from other stores via Amazon. Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this modem from Amazon tru one of their sattelite stores. I had no problem installing the modem but had a nightmare with Comcast getting it to work. After spending an hour on the phone twice with Comcast, and them telling me the modem was bad, I decided to Call Motorola for help. Motorola ran all the diagnostics and said the modem was fine. After 3 days, I finally got the modem up and running. However, while on the phone with Motorola, the tech informed me that the two year warranty on the modem had already expired on 1/18/2011. I didn't receive the product until March 2011. Called Amazon to find out what was up with this. I was basically told I had to deal with the store I purchased it from and gave me a non-toll free number. I thought I bought it from Amazon? I would definitely send it back but do not want to go tru several more hours to get a replacement up and running. I will risk losing my $50. before I go tru this debacle again. All I asked for was the two year warranty I was entitled to. CAVEAT EMPTOR. I have bought from Amazon for years and have always been completely satisfied with their products and customer service. So, this is a first, and quite possibly, the last. Also, the modem I received was not the same model number as the one I ordered. I was told it was the same modem but with a dirrerent chipset.
