Customer Review: Great modem, easy to install, good price

I have Comcast cable internet service and was renting a cable modem for which I was paying a $5 per month rental fee. When I was notified by Comcast this month (March 2011) that they were jacking up the modem rental fee to $7 per month - a rate hike of 40% - I decided to buy a cable modem and return the rental. The rental was a Motorola SURFboard SB4200. I decide to buy this model Motorola SB5101 because it was basically the same modem but a newer model.
First of all, this modem shipped FAST - even though I selected the free shipping it only took 2 - 3 days to get.
The modem can be connected by using either a USB or Ethernet connection. It comes packaged with both types of cables along with a DVD containing a User Manual, installation instructions, and the software that you need to load if you connect via USB. If you use the Ethernet connection you don't have to load any software. My rental modem was connected via Ethernet so that is how I connected the new one.
I screwed the internet cable into the port on the back of the modem, plugged in the Ethernet cable and the power cord. That's it - just 3 connections. From the control panel in Windows you have to set the properties on the Network Connection to automatically obtain an IP address. This was very easy to do. The installation instructions that come on the DVD clearly explain how to do this.
When I tried to access the internet after connecting the new modem it brought up a Comcast activation screen rather than my usual home page. On this screen it said to enter my Comcast account number and then click "next". When I did this I got an error message saying that the page could not be displayed. I called Comcast and explained to the technical support person that I had just swapped out modems. He tried sending an activation signal but it didn't work - so he told me there must be a problem with the new modem.
When I re-connected the old modem it worked just fine. I called Motorola technical support (they are open 24/7) and got through with almost no wait time. When I told the Motorola support person that the new modem wouldn't work, but the old modem worked fine once I re-connected it, he told me that Comcast didn't complete the activation correctly. He said that Comcast needed to de-activate the old modem before the new one could be activated.
I called Comcast back and this time got a tech support person who actually knew what they were doing. I had to give them the ID and serial numbers from the bottom of the new modem. Once Comcast deactivated the old modem and activated the new one everything worked just fine.
Not counting the problem I had with Comcast, this modem was extremely easy to install. I was also very impressed with Motorola technical support. I got through to a knowledgeable live person with almost no wait time. I definitely recommend this modem and am impressed with Motorola technical support response time. Amazon shipped fast too. I'm very satisfied with this purchase.
