Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Motorola SURFboard SBG900 DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway (Black)Customer Review: Easy installation, great performance Summary: 5 Stars
This is my fist foray into wireless networking and I simply followed the suggestions of other reviewers in regards to being a Comcast customer, called them up with MAC ID and it went through without a glitch and I returned my rental modem the same evening.
Getting to setting up my own secure networking profile, I encountered minor difficulties which were easily remedied by calling Motorola, unlike some of the reviews I saw here, our tech was local (if you catch my drift, which nowadays is rare) and helpful, shared a few tips with me on how to understand the settings under my networking profile.
For ease of use, top of the line security protocols and consistency in signal strength around the home and even on separate floors, my signals never varies lower than 84%-97%. I recommend highly in my humble opinion.
Customer Review: SBG900 instant setup! Summary: 5 Stars
I started by calling my internet provider(Cox). Once they registered the correct MAC ID the modem worked almost instantly. I never even opened the CD that came with the modem. I configured the modem from a wired connection on my laptop, including setting up a WEP key, then I was able to set up the wireless connection later. I also have two other computers wirelessly connected. We have a large(>3000sqft colonial) house and one of the pc's is in a family room over the garage at the oposite end of the house. After configuring the keys on those computers they easily connected wirelessly. I walked in every room of our house with the laptop and my connection was 100% at all times. I still plan on attaching my printer to the USB port but don't have the correct cable yet so I can't comment on that aspect.
So far I'm thrilled!
Customer Review: Eliminated network disconnects, easy install, great customer service, Summary: 5 Stars
I struggled for months with a Linksys wireless G which my Dell laptop would disconnect repeatedly and with their abysmal customer service. a continuing source of frustration. I was impressed with the reviews of this Motorola and now after a full week without even one disconnect I'd like to say the favorable reviews are accurate. The device and the accompanying software made installation a breeze. I had a question though and called customer service. I was so pleased to get through to the service rep in only moments, he was based in Denver and actually listened to my question rather than reading from a pre-programmed script. And he knew the answer. What a pleasant difference. I highly recommend it.
I thought I'd update this more than 3 years later: I still have had no difficulty with this great product.
Customer Review: Excellant Modem/Router Summary: 4 Stars
The wireless router cable modem is excellent. You do have to call your cable provider and tell them that you are installing a new cable modem and give them your MAC ID number and ask them to syncronize it. They (the ISP) will be able to tell you if they can see the signal or not. I had a little trouble getting it to work with my Vonage phone service though, but after calling Motorola tech support, everything went very smooth. If you are using Vonage VIOP, you basically have to tell the SBG900's firewall to allow the Vonage system to work. Call Motorola tech support. They are very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about VIOP issues. Above all, I am very pleased with this router. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it isn't a "N" band router, but even though it isn't, it still works awesome. Great buy!!
Customer Review: Moto Surfboard Summary: 5 Stars
The cable modem works great out of the box. Compact, space saving. Had no trouble for the initial basic set up. I am no IT expert so Security enable setting instructions in the manual took a bit longer to understand but eventually able to setup (patiently follow step by step and it worked). I get speeds of 100 Kbps on the wired setup but less on wireless. Had this for about a month, always on, no lost connection yet. Purchased it for less than $100 plus got a $30 mail in rebate on top of this. If not for this cheaper cost, I would have bought a Linksys product as they have better customer service (took into account the price / value ratio when making purchase). Product Reviews have helped me a lot in deciding what to buy, so I am doing my part by giving this review.
