Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Motorola SURFboard SBG900 DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway (Black)Customer Review: Convenient all-in-one, but the DHCP server gets confused Summary: 3 Stars
I have a pretty diverse network, so I needed something that was not going to insist I toe the Windows line. This unit was easy to set up at first, and the speed was very good. I did have to wire my two Airport Express units because the alphabet soup of security options didn't jive. The trouble started when a PC or laptop would be awakened. It would occasionally get a complaint from the DHCP server that the requested IP was already taken. Then it would be stuck, not able to get an IP at all. This didn't make sense because I was using dynamic addressing for all devices. When I switched to static addressing, the problem seemed to go away. But I could not assign static addressing to the WinXP computer. I tried several times, and each time it looked like it switched to static, but later it would revert back to dynamic. I also could not use static addressing on the Airport Express units because they would not activate reliably. As others have said, you have to use the DHCP server whether you like it or not. I have not found any other highly rated all-in-one, so I may go back to modem+router, all Linksys.
Customer Review: Good solid Yankee goods Summary: 5 Stars
Compared to other routers, WAPs, modems and the like I've bought over the past ten years, this one is far and away the best: solid, simple, easy, and the browser interface was obviously written and designed by someone who's done it before.
The configuration allows for far more flexibility and choices than I was expecting from the other reviews here--I particularly like the customizable firewall, although I'd prefer to be able to simply add more rules to a standard profile than to have to chose low, medium or high profile OR full custom (I needed to allow POP/SMTP access to GMail's funky ports). The power consumption is so low I can't discern any temperature rise (the problem with the Linksys all-in-one I had first). The WAN speed is amazing: 12 Mbps, but that's probably because I had an older modem before.
My only quibble, other than the all-or-nothing firewall: why oh why not provide four, five or even six switched or even hubbed Ethernet ports, like all other home networking routers do, so I wouldn't need a separate Ethernet switch?
Customer Review: Quick setup. Fewer cables. Faster service. Summary: 5 Stars
I never understood why a modem and router packaged as one device wasn't as mass produced as the products sold separately. The all in one is way more attractive and functions as good or ever better than the products I replaced it with (an RCA cable modem and D-Link Wireless G router). More importantly, it took an entire device and its 3 cables/AC cords off my desktop and allows for a way cleaner look as I am severely OCD about cables and cable management. I would've paid double if I knew it would look as good and function as well as it does.
Setup was easy and took all of 10 minutes. It would've taken 5 if I hadn't goofed on setting up my firewall. Since setup its been flawless and I've had zero issues.
I think its worth noting that this product has a USB-in port - this isn't mentioned on the Amazon product page. While I don't use it, I'm sure this product can be connected to a mass storage device for networking.
Delivery was perfect as usual and the price (at the time) was competitive as usual. Amazon always delivers.
Customer Review: Excellent Wireless Cable Modem Summary: 5 Stars
I use this with the USB device that Motorola makes. It works great and connects well. Don't get the "free cable modem" like you've seen from Circuit City or others to sign up with Comcast. This gives you the flexibility of connecting outside that trapped extension of a basic cable modem. Again, NO holes to drill and route cables. Great solution in the right direction. I recommend the best possible high signal level, cable splitter designed especially for cable modem use ( I bought one from Monster Cable) to ensure the best connection. It also offers the ability for you to connect more computers to it's signal without interruption of service. Didn't have a picture problem while in use with the HD cable box. This one is ultra-fast and has a great signal all around. You should test where the "sweet spot" is with your Wireless USB Adapter. I bought a USB Adapter for connecting to this modem as I have a desktop without a Wi-Fi card (a must have if you want to use this wireless cable modem). Very happy all around with Motorola products.
Customer Review: Easy installation - works with Comcast Summary: 5 Stars
No problems installing this - except my Comcast help guy suggested it would be better to get their router. I just had to go into a windows menu to enable Wifi, after telling him I still had no WiFi. After that, it's been sweet city being able to use my laptop anywhere in the house or yard. Nice piece of gear - you own it, and don't have to rent it from Comcast forever.
A little tip I just learnt from a Comcast phone help person: When you lose your internet service, shut off all computers using that service in your home, then "powercycle" the modem, i.e., pull out the power cable for thirty seconds, then re-insert the power cable, let the modem come up (it should be OK now and the lights 3 and 4 should be indicating internet service is present - they blink when it is gone), then turn on your computers and you should have your internet service back. Phew! Easier to do than to say. It took months before anyone at Comcast told me this. Maybe they like to keep customers dependent and insecure.
