Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Motorola SURFboard SBG900 DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway (Black)Customer Review: BUYER BEWARE!! Summary: 1 Stars
I don't think I've ever felt compelled to write a review before this one, but this product wasted the last 4 hours of my life.
I am in no way computer illiterate. I currently rent a modem from my internet provider, and I figured I might as well buy my own modem and quit paying them the rental fee. After lots of internet research and reading through tons of reviews of products on amazon, I came to this one. I did notice a couple of complaints on here about the router dropping wireless signals, but being the brilliant tech savvy person I am, I chalked those up to user error. Plus at $100 for both a wireless router and a modem?! What a steal! Fours hours later, after about 3 hours on the phone with motorola customer support, and 1 hour on the phone with my own internet provider, let me provide a little warning before adding this item to your cart.
Warning #1: The wireless DID NOT work. It dropped the internet connection and rebooted the wireless feature about every 5 minutes. Motorola customer service claimed this was simply an issue with the router's channel (the frequency it works on). After exhaustively trying every channel, I can assure you, it was the hardware.
If you don't believe me, or do not want to listen to my rant, just do an internet search with the product name and "dropping wireless signals." You will find forums of people describing exactly what I experienced. Maybe this is only the case with certain internet providers or regions, but this product to me was worth less than the bubble packaging that came with it.
Warning #2: The price really isn't that great. I found a different cable modem and wireless router (not a 2 in 1 unit) for $70 total, including 3 day UPS shipping....
Warning #3: The two-in-one may sound like a good idea, but it's not. I got an hour long rant from my internet provider about why the two-in-one units are actually not convenient. In short, if something happens to your internet, they can't work on these units easily, and that extra 6 cubic inches you saved by combining the units comes at the expense of no internet.
Warning #4: The software will not work on mac. I read the reviews, and I knew this would be the case. I also knew I'd be able to set it up myself, as I've set up lots of networks before. So this was not really an impediment to me, but it might be to others and warrants repeating.
BUYER BEWARE. I HIGHLY recommend buying two separate units, and perhaps not a wireless unit made by motorola (sweet phones though).
Thank you amazon, however, for wonderful customer service in my return of this unit.
