Customer Review: Took a surge, says it's protecting, but the voltage meter is constantly blinking
Summary: 3 Stars

During the winter storm in MD/DC area, there was much lightening. I went to a family member's house, and while there it was explained to me that there was a bit of a problem with the surge protector.

Long story short, the surge protector seemed to save the Home Theatre plugged into it from a surge, however, the power strip leaves me with questions due to it's actions.

First, the lights says it's grounded and protection is going on. OK, no problem.

Second, The receiver had to be reset after the storm, so I guess it took a small hit, but nothing permanent. The receiver went back to normal after powering everything down and unplugging the power strip. The same went for another receiver in the house on a different surge protector.

Now, the problem that leaves me questioning this strip. The digital display that shows AC Line Voltage appears fried. It flickers now. Rapidly. It does not report any information. It's done.

The family member now wants it replaced due to that. Obviously the surge protector took a hit. The receiver had to be reset and the Voltage meter is now fried. However, it still says it's protecting...

It was decided, better safe than sorry, and replace it with another surge protector, different brand. While the voltage meter could always be taped over to block the light, it's still a bit odd to see part of it fried, and the other lights OK.

It served it's purpose for a while, appeared to protect everythign hoooked to it. That's good. but having the voltage meter flickering is a bit annoying. I guess monster decided not to provide surge protection for that part of the surge protector.

Customer Review: Well built, high quality power protection
Summary: 5 Stars

I received the Monster HTS 1000 MKIII from Amazon about a week ago, after losing my DVD player, VCR, Tivo, and Wii to a massive power surge. I was immediately surprised by the size and weight of the unit. It is quite large, weighing several pounds and measuring just over 16" long by 5" wide by 3" high when laying flat. It feels quite sturdy, made of what appears to be brushed aluminum and black plastic or thermoplastic. The cord is long (6 to 8 feet) and is of high quality (true rubber, not vinyl or shiny plastic).

Upon plugging it in for the first time, you'll notice that it seems to check itself and the power coming into it. There is a brief delay, where it measures the voltage and checks for ground - something I immediately found reassuring. There is a circuit breaker/reset button on one end, a jack for a remote cable on the other end. Monster has included labels for your various cords, so you know what you're unplugging, as well as a coaxial cable, a phone cable, and a remote cable to connect it to a receiver.

I haven't yet had the "opportunity" to test the unit as a surge protector - and I hope I never do. I purchased this as a sort of insurance policy that I hope I never use. But should a surge hit, Monster provides a $350,000 warranty covering properly connected equipment. Good enough for me.

This unit is one of the more expensive surge protectors out there, but it's less expensive than an insurance deductible, and it's certainly less expensive than replacing your electronics. A good buy by any estimate.

Customer Review: Comments on the AUDIO difference - worth it!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't comment on this unit as a surge protector yet. But man, oh, man! I can hear a dramatic improvement in the sound quality. I own an old NAD power amp, a Rotel pre-amp and have Linn speakers. I sold stero equipment for years and used to think investments in cable, power conditioners, and such were all tremendous wastes of money. I have a home recording studio and was having some trouble with equipment humm and interference. So I purchased the Monster Power strip on the recommendation of a friend. I hooked up a cassette deck, a Digital Audio Tape deck, my computer, audio interface, mic pre-amp, and the stereo equipment mentioned above...and was stunned by the results. Even though there are four hookups dedicated to audio, and four dedicated to video - it works fine for audio. My next purchase will be one of the pro units for audio only. Then this unit will get moved to my home entertainment unit where it belongs.

The sound coming from my equipment is measurably and noticeably cleaner, warmer, and richer. Cleaner highs, deeper lows, and more definition to the whole sound stage. For less than a hundred bucks, it's like I just purchased 8 new much more expensive components.

Customer Review: Busted!
Summary: 1 Stars

I guess a surge hit or something because the alarm on the Monster Power went off and everything shut down.

Now, everytime I plug in the Monster Power, the alarm goes on with no way to turn it off and it powers nothing.

I found on the manufacturer's web site, "Audible alarm sounds when the protection circuit has been disabled. The product should be immediately unplugged. Contact your dealer or Monster Cable for service."

If I use a regular multiple outlet power strip that has circuit breaker protection (as they all seem to have), everything works fine. If I plug the Monster Power outlet strip into any socket in my apartment, the alarm goes off and the strip doesn't turn on.

No idea what the manufacturer is thinking. Does the alarm indicate something internal in their strip is fried? If so, it's good that they've got this alarm thing, but on the other hand, it'd be better if they made it so it wouldn't get fried. All the standard 3 dollar multiple outlet strips with circuit breaker protection I have are over 10 years old and don't have any issues.

Customer Review: Monster Stands Behind Warranty!
Summary: 5 Stars

Original Power Bar was an HTS 2000 MKII, 12 outlet, 2775 Joules purchased from Amazon 2 years ago. We must have taken a power surge, because my LCD TV cut off, and there was a slight burning electronic smell from the HTS 2000. Half of the outlets and LCD voltage and amperage indicator lights were still operational. Called Monster, first question, when did you purchase. Second question, was any equipment damaged. Nothing was damaged, and the unit did what it was supposed to do. Monster informed me that since the model I purchased was no longer made, but was a 12 outlet bar, would I mind having TWO HTS 1000 MKIII, 8 outlet bars. NO PROBLEM! They basically upgraded me for free from one bar that was 2775 Joules to TWO bars that are rated for 6125 Joules. The 2775 Joule bar worked great so I'm extra confident with 6125 Joules. I paid for shipping of the old damaged bar, and within about 5 business days of getting back the old bar, they shipped me out the 2 new bars no cost. I've wondered about the premium cost of their products, but the stuff works, and they actually stand behind them.
