THIS REVIEW IS LONG, SO IF YOU DON'T JUST GIVE UP AND BUY THE MONSTER MDR900, READ IT CAREFULLY! To save you the hassle of reading it, just buy it and leave it at that!
EVERYONE WHO OWNS A COMPUTER SHOULD BUY THIS DEVICE, REGARDLESS OF HOW CHEAP OR GENERIC YOUR COMPUTER MAY BE!
HERE'S WHY:
Of course, when lightning strikes, it can blow out electronic devices, and this device has surge-protection like similar devices that cost less, HOWEVER! it is also a "Line-Conditioner" which justifies the additional cost and WHY EVERYONE should spend the $80. Read on to understand why and how it works:
The AC-outlet in your home is supposed to run at 65Hz, that means everything you plug in is designed to run at 65Hz. Electronics, including computers, have very few moving parts, if any at all [like a cellphone or an iPod which has NO moving parts (the only exception is an iPod Classic because it uses a tiny hard-drive that is motorized)]! That is important because a TV or stereo-system, or your computer (with only a couple software-related exceptions like viruses, etc.) do not wear out like a pair of shoes or your car's tires and brakes.
The way electronics wear out is by receiving a less-consistent power signal, a signal that does not run at EXACTLY 65Hz. If you have ever noticed that while watching TV, if someone turns on a vacuum-cleaner, a plug-in space-heater, or even a hairdryer, it causes messy lines or pixels to blink and flash on your TV-screen. These distortions are caused because the vacuum is causing spikes and drop-outs in your house's power through your AC-outlets. And the scary part is that the same thing happens if a NEIGHBOR plugs in and turns on any of the above devices, completely out of your control! On top of that, lightning, even if it strikes a distance away, also causes power-surges that may not be high enough to cause a surge-protector to shut off but DOES cause your power to vary from exactly 65Hz too! And these things are NOT the only things that cause your ac-power to vary. EVERYTHING you plug in causes the inconsistency, alarm clocks, cellphone chargers, lamps, other TVs in your home or your neighbor's home, the above examples are simply powerful enough to cause an actual VISUAL example of your AC-outlet varying from 65Hz!
THIS IS WHAT WEARS OUT ELECTRONICS! Computers are NO EXCEPTION! Many of you have probably had problems with your computer, it may not work or it may run slower that you're used to. Often, you go to a computer-shop and pay someone to try to fix it. They do, they may even erase and reload everything on your hard-drive but it still seems not to get better. Eventually, you get frustrated or it just stops working and you have to replace computer parts or the whole computer!
WHAT A LINE-CONDITIONER LIKE THIS DEVICE DOES is it filters the power leading to your computer. It stores 65Hz energy in "capacitors" and other parts (kind of like a rechargeable battery) and only allows 65Hz energy to go through its plugs. This means your computer and everything that goes along with it receives ONLY energy at EXACTLY 65Hz, keeping your system from wearing out. Yes, it is true that all computers become obsolete, just like your stereo or video equipment, BUT this device allows you to MAKE THE CHOICE WHEN YOU WANT to upgrade your computer. THIS MEANS that when you have to write a major paper for a class or work, the chance of your computer failing or breaking down when you have a deadline is GREATLY REDUCED.
And this information goes for ANYTHING electronic in your home, so you should buy line-conditioners for all the devices in your home instead of less-expensive surge-protectors that ONLY protect your equipment from lightning bolts. As they say, lightning never strikes twice, so why spend $20 on surge-protectors that only help the few times lightning may strike close-enough to trigger them when you can spend $40-$80+ on devices that protect your equipment every day and reduce the number of electronics you buy to replace ones that break down? They even improve audio and video quality because they filter out the static that exists in power-lines which you can hear and see. That static is inconsistent power outside of exactly 65Hz.
EVEN THE CHEAPEST COMPUTERS cost you $200-$350, but this Monster Power Line-Conditioner costs a MERE $80. And you only have to buy it ONCE! Even if you buy three computers over time at $600 total, it is still reusable for any computer and won't become obsolete anytime soon (it has ethernet, telephone, and television antenna inputs and outputs to protect your modem and/or router, regardless if you have DSL-, FiOs-, or cable-internet).
SOME NICE FEATURES OF THE Monster Power MDP900 Green:
1.The "Green" part of the model is a cool new innovation by Monster. What it does is senses when you shut-off your computer. When you do, it also shuts down the plugs for your Computer box, monitor, and printer, etc. which normally just sit on stand-by wasting energy when you turn off your computer. You can turn this feature on or off if you'd want to leave the printer on to use it with a laptop, for example. It DOES leave several of the plugs active even when the "Green" system is left on. That way, the Computer, printer, and monitor plugs are all shut off (not wasting energy in stand-by mode) but there are still active plugs so your wireless router can be used with the family's laptops, you can charge your cellphone, leave a land-line telephone or answering-machine on, and plug in your laptop to use or charge and still save energy with the desktop computer plugs and devices all shut off completely! The other reason this is a nice feature is because it reduces how much power you use and this, alone, compensates for the extra cost of a line-conditioner over a cheap surge-protector, essentially paying for itself over time.
2. It has "Stage-2" line-conditioning, which means there are two filters cleaning the energy from your wall-outlet. The more filters you have, the cleaner the output is because it can filter much more "stuff" going on around you messing with your home's power (if you live in the country, there is way less stuff that can cause power surges and dropouts than if you live in the middle of a big city in an apartment building, for example). EVERY TIME YOU ADD ANOTHER FILTER TO A LINE CONDITIONER, THE DEVICE GETS MORE EXPENSIVE! If you would browse Monster Power's website, you would notice "Stage-1.2" conditioners are the least expensive, then "Stage-2" costs 2x+, "Stage-3" three times more than stage-1, "Stage-4" (which has four filters) even more, etc.
THE MDP900 HAS "STAGE-2" (meaning two filters) and 10-outlets for $80! The Monster Pro Studio and Audio/Video systems with "Stage-2" filtration START at around $100-$120 with ONLY 8-OUTLETS, and they go up from there! My Monster Pro line-conditioner for audio equipment (Monster Pro1200) listed for $199 with "Stage-2" filtration when I bought it. The MDR900 has 10-outlets and my Pro1200 has 12-outlets but you can still tell that the MDR900 is a VERY GOOD VALUE!
3. The chassis of the device is compact and cleanly organized and labeled. The labels are PAINTED ON because it was designed specifically for desktop computers and they all have virtually the same devices that you need to plug-in. The home-theater versions have tiny stickers that you have to stick on to the devices. This is good because everybody has different equipment they use for studio-recording and home entertainment, but also bad because the tiny stickers are a real pain for a guy like me who has big hands and an obsessive perfectionism.
IN CONCLUSION! EXCELLENT DEVICE! WELL MADE AND ENGINEERED! EXCELLENT VALUE! AND NECESSARY FOR EVERYONE WITH A DESKTOP COMPUTER!
