Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of 3-RCA RGB RG-59/u Component Video SplitterCustomer Review: It works but not how I had hoped... Summary: 2 Stars
I wanted to use this for my component PC video capture device, the Hauppauge Colossus.
My plan was to have my PS3 and my set top box run into the input of the Colossus. My PC sits back in a cabinet and I was hoping to not have to pull my PC out and switch the wires each time I wanted to record either PS3 gameplay or programs off my set top box.
So basically, I was using this as a 2 in, 1 out Y splitter.
The connectors are nice, gold plated, and the wire is thick and sturdy. Good solid connection.
Unfortunately, there is enough signal leakage in all three directions that it can't really be used for this application.
First, one of the two input devices has to be completely terminated (I mean even unplugged from the wall, not just switched off) just to get the other to show up so that the PC capture program will recognize the signal.
Unfortunately, still having both devices hooked up will cause an unacceptable loss of visual sharpness and quality and this is particularly noticeable with text on screen. It appears much blurrier than if you just had one device hooked straight into the capture device.
For example, if your PS3 and cable box are both hooked into it, even if your PS3 is switched off and unplugged from the wall, your cable box picture will appear very blurry.
So as a workaround I'm still using this device basically as an extension cord to the component input on my capture card from the back of the PC. So if I want to record the PS3, I unplug the cable box component wires from the splitter, and vice versa. Having only one device hooked into it does not cause a loss in signal quality, and I sat there and plugged/unplugged the second device just to verify the instant loss of quality on screen as I was plugging the second item into the splitter.
So for me it's a glorified component extension cord at this point.
Hope this helps anyone who was thinking of using it for a similar purpose.
