Customer Review: The mighty light for the everyday reader...

The Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 is a versatile light that fits on all books and even some Kindles(see QUESTION). While out of the box and even with 3- AAA batteries the device is fairly light, the construction is fairly sturdy and this little device puts out quite a mighty light! Below I put the light through some testing and outlining the design features this light has. **Note: I do not own a Kindle so I was unable to physically test it with a Kindle
** DESIGN **
- The XtraFlex2 is designed to clip onto Kindles, Paperback and Hardcover books by way of a "clip". The clip design itself is fairly sturdy and gets its "grip" from a small spring located under the hood of the clip. The base and clip portion have small padded rubber grips to avoid damage to your book or the Kindle frame.
- The FLEX NECK(goose-neck) is about 7-inches long after bending the light head over the book.
- The base itself serves as a stand for the light and the storage compartment for the 3- AAA batteries. When batteries are placed into the device it has about the weight of the batteries + 2.5oz.
- The device itself uses 2 high-luminous LEDs. They give off a nice COOL-white (blue-white) color. The device uses a push button to control the lights.
** TESTING **
I put the XtraFlex2 through a bunch of testing, ranging from brightness of the LEDs... quality of the clip.. covering for the batteries etc. There are plenty of pros but also a few cons people need to be aware of.
LED Control - These are controlled by a push-button on top of the head. The button feels very solid and durable. When you depress the button you will feel a tiny "click" that lets you know it worked. By Default the light will turn both LED's on at once.. Press it again to turn off one LED and press it a third time will turn the device OFF. ** The push button is a bit sensitive. I could easily see the device being accidentally turned on if tucked in a draw so be careful.
FLEX NECK - The neck itself is well designed and sturdy. It feels constructed to withstand a lot of abuse and is easy to mold while able to retain its shape. There are a multitude of angles in which you can bend the device. You can even tilt the head on a steep angle but in doing so I feel it could damage the wiring inside so I would not recommend creating sharp angles with the Flex-neck.
LED Brightness - This is a "mighty bright" light for real. The output of the two LEDs live up to the hype that they are High Intensity LEDs(super LEDs). With two LEDs going I could see this being a problem for someone laying in bed with their spouse. One LED brings the level down to a more manageable level. With only one LED in operation expect about a 50% drop in brightness and a 15% drop in "coverage". With standard size books the light was more than ample to cover both pages. However larger books proved to be a problem even when clipped towards the spine of the book for maximum coverage on both pages. A simple tilt of the head fixed this. (Expect about 8-12 inches of coverage depending on your angle)
CLIP portion - The clip itself is sturdy and able to fan out about 1.5-inches without much effort giving you plenty of room to chomp onto that Kindle or Book. The clip itself holds very well to books and I could see the rubber felt grips doing a fine job holding onto your Kindle w/o scratching it up. The dimensions are the clip are as follows (1.5 inches DEEP) (1.0 inches WIDE)
** WHAT WILL THIS LIGHT WORK WITH??? DOES IT FIT MY KINDLE?? WHAT ABOUT PAPERBACK BOOKS? **
This light is advertised as a "Kindle" light. While I do not own a Kindle I took measurements of the clip and began to compare it with specs for various Kindles. This clip will safely fit on the older Kindle models without a problem. The rim for older Kindles appears wide enough to fit the clip without risking screen damage. ** 3rd GENERATION KINDLES ** however will have a problem. The 3rd generation lost about 0.5 inches in "width" while keeping the same 6.0 inch screen. This means the boarder is smaller and thus the clip will overhang onto your screen (blocking text and risking damage). If you own a Kindle - 3rd Generation then I suggest you look into one of those Kindle covers w/ the built in LED light
KINDLE: Gen1 and Gen2 work. Gen3 = problematic
BED-FRAME: As long as the clip can securely grip the frame it will work just fine
HARDCOVER: Works flawless. Just clip to the front or back cover
PAPERBACK: Works with a bit of adjustments. Do not clip to the cover or back of your paperback or you risk damaging them. Instead take about 20 pages + cover/back and clip it to the middle of the bunch. This gives the device enough "weight" to support it without bending your book or causing you to fight with the light.
** OVERALL **
This is a great clip-on light! It is built sturdy yet fairly lightweight (excluding the batteries). The neck is strong enough to take some abuse, the clip itself grips well and has rubber grips to keep your book or Kindle frame looking good as new, and the LEDs are crisp and bright. It is a very simple design yet a lot of effort was put into it. There are a few minor changes I personally would of made(see NOTES) but overall this is a quality book light. If you do not own a [Kindle Generation 3] this will be perfect for your nighttime needs.
NOTE: The on/off switch, while quality, could easily be accidentally engaged. It would of been better to have a simple High/Low/Off switch put on the base of the device
NOTE: Battery clip is "sensitive". Be careful when removing it as I honestly do not trust the sturdiness of the clips.
NOTE: The device runs on 3-AAA batteries or a 4v DC power source (adapter sold separately in most cases)
