Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Midland WR100 Weather RadioCustomer Review: Keeps me up all night Summary: 2 Stars
I bought two of these units and gave one to my father-in-law as a gift. As severe weather season just kicked in here in Wisconsin, I bet he is questioning my motivation. This thing is a medieval torture device. Yes, it is nice to get weather updates at the push of a button, but we purchased this after a friend's house was taken down by a tornado, and we thought it would be nice to have something that warned us of impending doom coming in the night. Unfortunately, it warns you of everything. There is a screeching alarm for a thunderstorm watch, then another for when it is upgraded to warning, then another for the tornado watch, then another for the flood watch, then the flood warning. I was awake from nine to midnight two nights ago with one ear piercing alarm after the next. Finally I had to turn the thing off, as I was willing to be blown away by a tornado rather than being awakened again. I don't want to be awakened unless I am in imminent peril. Can you say 'night mode'. Really, as hard as it is to believe, there is no way around these alarms. Either you take them all, or you have to have no alarm at all. In all other ways a nice radio, just don't plan on getting any sleep on stormy nights.
Customer Review: BEEEP BEEEEEEP BEEEEEP BEEEEEP BEEEEEP BEEEEEP BEEEP Summary: 2 Stars
Right now it is almost 1am. I've had this weather radio for a few days, and like a few things about it, but let me tell you the deal-breaker: IT BEEPS FOR EVERYTHING. You can set it to beep only for emergencies in your area, which is great, but it still beeps for EVERYTHING in your area! All I care about is tornados, but it beeps for heavy rain, thunderstorms, high wind... everything.
The alarm volume CANNOT be adjusted. It sounds like a life-size foreign police car inside your bedroom every time it goes off. It doesn't take a bomb going off to wake me up, the volume should be something I can change. Overall, I liked the price and look of this unit, but it isn't user-friendly (or sleep friendly!).
We're under tornado watch tonight, so I haven't yanked the cord from the wall, but I keep getting woken up with a shot of adrenaline wondering what the 900,000 decible noise is, only to find it is an alert saying that there's still a thunderstorm outside. Thanks, radio!
If you are looking for a radio for your home, I'd look for one with an adjustable alert volume, selective alert types, and SAME technology. This one will drive you insane!
Customer Review: A Great Safety Investment Summary: 5 Stars
I was born and raised in Charleston, SC so I know the importance of having a dependable weather radio in my home. I have had a few as a matter of fact, and the Midland WR-100B is by far the best one that I have purchased so far.
I work for a grocery store chain in SC and our store began offering the WR-100 at a discounted price as a service to our customers at the beginning of hurricane/tornado season. I have programmed dozens of WR-100's for customers and I found the procedure to be easy and straightforward. It even has an alarm clock.
I purchased one for my home and several for family members as gifts. My wife finds it useful as well. She gets the daily forecast from the radio before she leaves for work in the morning. The alarm is loud (90db) and can be heard at the other end of the house. Reception of the local NOAA station is crystal clear because of digital tuning (no signal drift as is common with knob-tuned radios). The different colored warning lights are also useful because they allow you to determine the importance of alert broadcasts. You can buy a fancier and more expensive weather alert radio, but in my opinion, not a better one.
Customer Review: Fantastic!!! Summary: 5 Stars
What a great device. For years I have owned and used an inexpensive weather radio that just had an on/off switch. Turn it on and listen to the nearest NWS station or turn it off.
This Midland weather radio goes so far beyond that. It plugs in rather than working on batteries and you leave it on all the time. There is a bar to press if you want to hear the local weather forecast. Press the bar again and it goes back to mute.
But the beauty of it is that you can program in up to 25 county codes so that you get the warnings from the NWS as they are issued and because the radio is always on, the radio comes on automatically when a warning is issued for one of the counties you have programmed in. It stays on for five minutes and then goes mute again.
I put my county and the 3 surrounding counties in so now I know what's coming and we have a lot of severe thunderstorms in my area during the summer months so this is great. If I'm asleep and a severe storm is approaching I will know it.
It also runs on batteries for when the power goes out.
Great machine. I love it !!
Customer Review: Excellent investment in personal safety. Summary: 5 Stars
I live in Nashville, TN where recently there were devastating tornados with resulting deaths. I ordered the Midland WR-100B weather radios for myself and for my 2 adult married daughters and their families. I gave the weather radios to my children as Christmas gifts and we put the radios to good use recently when we had tornados that swept through middle TN. It gave me a great peace of mind that my family is protected by this device. My family stated the radios worked very well during the storms. Even if the electic power goes out the back up batteries keep it working. When there are severe storms and tornados in the area the weather service alert comes on with a constant flow of weather updates. You can set the radio to just give weather updates for your immediate county and surrounding areas. The radio lets you know when there is an Amber Alert in your area. It worked a few days ago when there was an Amber Alert in Nashville. I keep the radio plugged in at all times and use the alarm clock feature to wake me up every morning. The radio is excellent and a very good investment and I am very pleased with it.
