Customer Review: Pleased with purchase
Summary: 5 Stars

I am very pleased with this radio. After owning it about six months, I purchased more to give as Christmas gifts. My mother called me a couple of days ago saying the weather looked fine, but the alert had gone off. Soon other sources confirmed the tornado watch! She was very grateful to be alerted.

It has not only alerted me to weather, one time an amber alert came across it. I didn't have the news on and didn't know about it. It was neat to see it work for a non-weather alert! And I was able to keep an eye out for the suspicious vehicle.

My son's preschool didn't have one, and had it on their wish list; so I donated one to them. It made me feel better knowing his teachers would be alert to weather conditions and public alerts.

Recently I upgraded to the 300 model. I thought I wanted a volume control for that loud alert. I realized though that if I had it in my bedroom and turned it down so it wouldn't wake up the children, then during the day time I'd never hear it downstairs. So I have the more expensive radio, and decided NOT to turn it down. I put the radio downstairs, so I can hear it on both floors (I awaken to noise easily), but it is less likely to wake up sleeping children. Though this spring I may enter the codes to cover all alerts EXCEPT marine warnings. It goes off for that A LOT, and I am not a boater!

I think it is a great radio, especially for the price!

Customer Review: This Radio Can Save Your Bacon
Summary: 5 Stars

I live in Oregon, which is not noted for severe storms, but I was really caught "off guard" last week when a severe thunderstorm with a large amount of hail blew through. Severe weather can occur almost anywhere! Shortly after the storm, I ordered one of these weather alert radios to keep me more aware of any local hazard that could pose a threat.

The radio itself is quite sensitive, and provides reception of several more distant weather stations that can not be picked up by less sensitive receivers such as the general purpose (AM/FM/TV/Wx) Sony 410 (see my review of the Sony).

The big deal here is the weather alert function... The radio can be set to be silent until it receives a specially coded message from the NOAA weather station. The radio can be programmed to respond to "codes" from one area or several, so you can adjust your "zone of protection" to suit your needs. When a warning that affects the area that you have programmed in (by setting specific SAME codes) is detected, a loud alarm or flashing light or voice alert will sound (your choice).

If it is desired to hear a weather report, just push the "weather" button on the unit and listen... very much like those old Radio Shack "weather cubes" that were very popular 20 years ago, but with better reception.

Everyone should have one (or more) of these!

Customer Review: Great unit, great price!
Summary: 5 Stars

There are a ton of reviews here, so I don't know if this will make a difference. I live in North Texas, and I am in the bottom portion of tornado alley. I bought this unit based on other customer reviews.

I am really glad I did. This unit works really well. I like being able to set it for my county only, and I like being able to turn it on, and put it to snooze so that it only goes off when a tornado watch or warning has been issued. I don't have to turn it off to make it be quiet. It is loud, but I like that. since you can set it to tornado only, it won't go off all night long unless the tornado warning continues, but that's exactly what I want.

I had no problem finding my county code based upon the link that was provided in the directions, but I had problems finding my "channel" to listen to. My dad is a ham, so I just asked him to do it. But I am sure you can find it easily enough. The reason I couldn't find it easily is because I had a bit of a reception problem, but now it's coming in nice and clear. Put it near a window.

If you are in a county that is further than 50 miles from your nearest weather repeater, you will need to get an external antenna, so if you know that already, you might as well get the external antenna when you order the unit.

Great unit. I highly recommend it.

Customer Review: Poorly made--failed when I needed it
Summary: 1 Stars

I received this radio a week ago. The first day I used it the watch alert went off perfectly. A few hours later I found out there was a warning as we were hit by a severe thunderstorm. The radio did not warn us. It was only after I turned it on manually that I could barely understand the message through the static.
Last night I moved it to our bedroom where it had a very clear signal. Apparently, as I moved the antenna after shutting it off, we lost reception. We were hit by another severe storm during the night.

This morning my husband, who is an electrical engineer, took it apart and found that a screw that was supposed to be holding the antenna wire in place had broken the plastic screw hole. This is nothing we did. It was not dropped or handled roughly. He repaired the broken part and the voice messages are very loud and strong. We will see if that makes a difference.

We live in the woods and cannot see storms until they are right upon us. We replaced a very old weather radio that would alert for all counties and does not have SAME technology. We have more storms coming tonight. I'll give it one more try before it goes in the trash. I'll put up with the old technology that works and has kept us safe for years.

Customer Review: GREAT Bargain!
Summary: 5 Stars

This purchase was my third one of these radios! They are a GREAT value, as far as I'm concerned. All the buttons are laid out in logical order and the LCD display is easy to read. I now have two at home and one a work. They monitor the weather, 24/7, and the forecast is only a button press away.

I especially like the S.A.M.E. capability, since I can program in the counties I want watch/warning statements for. You can program as many as 25 counties into this receiver. Amazing! This is convenient so I don't get warnings which will not affect me over 80 miles away! And the warning alarm is LOUD! I also like the small LEDs for Warning, Watch, and Statement. If you miss the actual broadcast, the LEDs will light-up during the duration of the statement. This way, if you have been away from the radio, you know immediately when you return, that something is active and can then review it with the Weather button.

The radio supports all seven NWS NOAA frequencies in the 162Mhz FM band. Plus it has an alarm clock! The most important function for me is the 'battery backup' it has. With (3) AA batteries, your radio will work after you lose AC power!!!

Overall, a GREAT WX radio by Midland!
