Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 4000 (3.0) Silver PS2/USB Mac/WinCustomer Review: Mac Users Beware! Summary: 2 Stars
Well, I got this product last night. I can not say however, I got it from a store nearby. Nonetheless, I own a Mac Mini of the Intel Core Duo persuasion. I needed a new keyboard and this seemed the best option. It feels nice to use and almost like the keyboard that is actually in two pieces that I had before. The mouse is almost exactly like a model we had at the University I went to, minus two buttons on the side. Still not bad for the effort.
The trouble...comes with the CD. The installation program was flawless. And at the end of such, it asked me to restart. No mention of having to remove the disc. So I did. Mac Mini turns off. Flickers back to life. To a Grey screen. The CD is trying to take over the Mac. I obviously flip out, thinking there is something wrong with the Mac. The next day, I find out the key sequence that allows me to eject from the startup screen, and it does so...immediately loading OS X.
To all Mac users. Find another way to get the drivers if possible. Take it off of the .dmg and onto the hard drive, eject the disc, then install.
Customer Review: Good, but also bad Summary: 3 Stars
This is my second purchase of this same keyboard. I consider it to be of inferior manufacturing quality and overpriced, but the features and convenience made me get another one after my old one started to die key by key after only a year. The main feature that made me get another one is the semi-ergonomic layout, without which I find it painful to type. I also use the programmable program-launching buttons all the time, as well as the media control buttons. It's also nice to not have any more wires cluttering up my desktop.
Cons: full price ($70 or so) is way overpriced considering the quality and durability of this product; as I mentioned above, my first one started to lose key function after not even a year. The numeric keypad wouldn't work, because the NumLock key and all the other keys on that row stopped working, as well as the F Lock key.
Also, make sure if you get this to look up, download and install the very latest version of the IntelliType and IntelliPoint programs. If you don't, your screensaver and Power Management settings for your monitor won't function....nice, huh?
Customer Review: Good for general use; not for me Summary: 3 Stars
Overall, this keyboard/mouse set works pretty well. For general computer use (surfing the web, checking email, etc), it'll serve you just fine. However, for anyone doing any gaming or image editing, this set just won't do.
The keyboard has an F-lock, which is all right, except in gaming I frequently use the F keys AND the Print Screen button. In order to do Print Screen, I have to turn off F-lock, and then hopefully remember to turn it back on. A bit of an annoyance, but not so bad by itself.
The BIG gaming problem comes when you need to hold down a key for a long period of time, for example to run. It will send the signal that you're pressing the key for a while, then stop. You then have to let off the key, and press down again to continue running. Running long distances? Get ready to mash those keys down many many times.
As far as image editing goes, the problem comes from the scroll wheel. It's rather non-responsive. Middle click is REALLY hard to do, and middle click and drag is nearly impossible.
Customer Review: Misunderstood Summary: 5 Stars
This product is magnificent! I looked for reviews for this product after I had purchased it because I got such a good deal on it. When I recieved it, I was already prepared for flaws and connectivity problems based on the reviews and (no surprise) it did have issues. I got frustrated and called to see if I could send it back but it looked like an arduous process. I decided to keep for the mean time and continue to be frustrated. The 2nd day I used it I found connection instructions under the keyboard and followed them. Ever since this thing work Great!!! Most people just install the software and forget the connection process so they end up with problems and get frustrated and send the product back. Just follow the instructions and you will be very pleased. The keyboard is smooth and has a very quick response time. The mouse is laser sharp and accurate and also very quick. You will love all the cool functions on the keyboard and the soft comfort pad of this product. For the price, I give it a 10!
Customer Review: Really good, if maybe not ergonomic enough Summary: 4 Stars
This is probably Microsoft's best-made Keyboard yet. It feels solid and steady, much more so than previous ones, and well-made. The Keys have great feedback and it looks and feels like a high-end peripheral. The 'faux leather' palm-rest works very well. The mouse unfortunately is not MS' high-end explorer, but the more simple optical mouse. It works well, but will leave some longing for the better contoured, button-rich explorer 3.0. The keyboard shape itself is a bit of a mixed bag, it feel like Microsoft tried to do everyone right, and missed it slightly either way: If you want a truly ergonomic board, don't get this; you can beat MS' own Optical Keyboard Pro (true ergo, and split). This is more akin to a more comfortable standard keyboard than something truly ergonomically styled. But, if that doesn't bother you, this is a good buy at a good price. Wireless works absolutely flawlessly, though the reach could be a tad bit farther.
