Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 4000 (3.0) Silver PS2/USB Mac/WinCustomer Review: Not what I expected..... Summary: 3 Stars
I've owned this desktop for about a month now and in all I have to say I'm dissapointed here is what I think could use some improvement:
-RANGE: It's no where near 6 feet, I wasn't able to get it work from my bed which is about 4 feet form the receiver(even after making changes and had a clear line with no obstacles). One of the things that made a real diferenca was placing the reciever on the desk which kind of defeat the pourpose of the wireless thing anyways since you still will have a cable going from your PC to the desk.
-F KEYS: Like other reviewers have said that is a crazy design, I'm a programer and it's really driving me crazy if they wanted to add this features they shoul at least make the F default and then unlock the other functions.
-DROPS: I don't know if is this keyboard in particular but I find that it drops letters or ignore commands and I have to be carefull and check everything I type.
-CAPS AND BLOCK: there's no indication that this keys are activated or not in the keyboard you have to look in the receiver and for me is just easier to try presing the keys.
-MOUSE: The side scrollin is pretty much useless since sometimes works and sometimes it dosn't and th same thing goes whe pressing the center button.
-ONE RECIEVER: This may not bother many people (it dosn't bother me as much) but when I bought this I was planing to use the keyboard and mouse on 2 diferent computers so I was surprised when I only could use them together. Anyways they look good together.
I still think thi desktop looks really good and the instalation was pretty easy and the keyboard is pretty comfortable to use and has some really cool features la the zoom key and the programables buttons.
Customer Review: Very Satisfied Overall Summary: 4 Stars
My first wireless keyboard/mouse and I'm pretty happy (see issues and resolution below). I went for this package becuase my desk has a keyboard drawer for storage but I like to have the keyboard up higher. Wires were a pain, but this is a perfect solution.
The keyboard is comfortable and easy to use. I've had it for a few months now and haven't had any connectivity or dropped keystroke issues. The keyboard this replaces was a very basic one, so the addition of all the function buttons is a major improvement over what I was using. The convenience of volume, mute, play/pause, email, calculator, etc is huge for me. I especially love the 5 favorites and have them programmed to load my browser and hit the standard sites I visit every time I start my PC.
The mouse is pretty good, but I did have a major issue for the first month. As some have reported here, I found it would NOT respond to my left-clicks on numerous occasions. Just to close a window or click a button I found I had to click over and over again even though the mouse was practically next to the receiver. This was pretty intermittent, but enough to really drive me crazy. I was about to trade it in, but decied to unplug the USB connection and try the PS/2 mouse and keyboard adapters that are provided for older computers. Amazingly this fixed the problem completly! All the features of the mouse and keyboard still work, and the performance overall seems much improved in my particular case.
So, after abandoning USB and switcing to PS/2 connections, I am very satisfied with my purchase. I give this only 4 of 5 stars because I found no documentation of this issue (and its simple simple fix) online and was about to return the product because of it.
Customer Review: Annoying at best Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this for both my home and office computer. It was ok at first - when I bought for my home computer I liked it, so I bought it for the office. I installed the supporting software per the instructions (I am a computer professional), and it worked briefly. Then on occassion the mouse software would report low batteries several times a day. When I checked the battery level in the software it read good. Even if I'd replace the batteries with brand new ones, a short time - within 8 hours - I'd get the replace battery message again. To resolve this, I uninstalled the supporting Microsoft Mouse software.
I'd lose signal, and even had to call MS tech support to learn how to resync it. This happened several times.
Now the mouse seems to behave solely on it's own at times. I find text getting highlighted and moved or copy/pasted when my hands are not even near the mouse or keyboard.
As for the keyboard, it has been significantly less of a problem, but entirely problem free. I frequently get low battery messages with the keyboard software but not several times a day.
At home I had a two computers and a KVM switch to switch the mouse, keyboard, and monitor between my WinXPPro and Linux boxes. On most occasions I'd lose the mouse and keyboard completely and have to plug the ends into the computer I wanted to use at the time. This, of course, disabled the keystrokes to switch the KVM.
All in all, I wish Amazon had negative stars - I'd give this product a -5 overall. Don't buy it. Find something else even if it costs a little more. My sets will be replaced soon enough.
Customer Review: Worst Microsoft keyboard I've ever had. Summary: 2 Stars
I've used and loved Microsoft Natural keyboards for many years. This is the worst one ever. I have both a desktop and notebook in my office. I had been using the old (wired) Natural keyboard on the desktop and bought a Wireless Natural Mutlimedia Keyboard/Mouse combo for my new notebook docking station. I loved the setup on my laptop so much, I wanted to buy another for my desktop. Unfortunately, MS no longer offers it and now the Wireless Optical Desktop is the closest thing to it. It is not nearly as good. I dislike it so much, I put it on my notebook docking station, which I use much less often than my desktop and moved the older wireless combo to my desktop.
What I like:
* cordless
* Pause/Play button means I don't need to open MediaPlayer when a coworker comes into my office.
What I don't like:
* It's black and really shows the dust
* The keys are *very* stiff and I miss a a lot of characters--especially the space key.
* I am occasionally warned the mouse signal quality is low even though it is sitting less than 6" from the receiver.
* They left the *&^%$#@! back and forward buttons off the mouse! Duh!
* The F Lock key really messes me up sometimes. I wasted a lot of time before I realized it was what was preventing me from doing Alt-PrtScn's.
* The "ergonomic" features of the keyboard are pathetic compared to the earlier Natural keyboards. There is very little rotation of the wrists.
Don't buy this keyboard. MS has done much better in the past. Wait for them to regain their sanity.
Customer Review: Frustrating issues with this Summary: 2 Stars
Although apparently there is a much newer similar model in the 5000, I bought this set about 8 months ago. At first I was relatively satisfied, but I am having a lot of annoying problems, mostly with the keyboard that are getting worse and more frequent with time.
The Mouse: The configuration of the mouse takes some getting used to, particularly because the button's on the sides are easily inadvertently pushed, opening menus and performing other functions. The wheel is also in a different place, which I don't mind, but took some getting used to. I have to change the batteries in this mouse about every 6 weeks.
The Keyboard: This is the big problem. First, like the mouse, the batteries die quickly. Secondly, for no apparent reason the signal goes down and the keyboard becomes either slow or non-functional, even when the mouse is working fine. Lately, keys have stopped working--particularly the control key. The keyboard will hesitate before typing a key I've struck, and it at other times goes into a repeat so suddenly I've written for two lines, or have 50 returns even when I've struck the offending key once. Lastly, a problem I could live with if everything else was ok, but the lettering on the left side letters have come off. So I there is no more e,r,t,s,d and c and f are almost gone. I've never had that happen before, even on keyboards I've had for years. It's nice looking, comfortable to use and convenient to move around, but I am going to have to replace it with something more responsive and reliable.
