Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 - SlateCustomer Review: Could be better Summary: 3 Stars
This mouse is actually about 2/3 normal size, which makes it more portable than a normal mouse but fits my hand reasonably well. Once the battery is fitted in, the mouse is significantly heavier than a normal mouse which takes some taking used to but is not a problem for every day use.
I like the fact that the receiver slots into the mouse itself for storage, and this also turns the mouse off which helps conserve the battery energy, but on the other hand I would have appreciate a separate switch which would enable me to turn off the mouse without slotting in the receiver, because I often leave my laptop on sleep and it's a pain in the butt to pull out the receiver and slot it in every time.
The tracking is just slightly laggy which takes some getting used to but is not an issue unless you're a gamer (which I'm not). However I have a major beef with the scroll wheel, which is fairly stiff, i.e. the smallest rotation possible on the wheel only scrolls down a tiny bit, which means that it takes more turns of the wheel to scroll down. This means that scrolling takes up more effort than in usual mice.
I'm giving this 3 stars because it's good enough that I'm willing to keep it and use it, but on the other hand if I would have gotten another mouse if I had the chance to choose again.
Customer Review: OldScifiDog Summary: 5 Stars
I am using this mouse on a new DELL Precision 6400.
This mouse works by plugging in its antenna into a USB port (before logging is - 1st time only) and does not require a new driver. I purchased this mouse configuration over a Blue Tooth because it seemed to me to be easier to use - just plug the antenna into a USB port and go. I was told that the Blue Tooth mouse required to be configured every time you turned on the computer - this maybe very ease and convent also, but I am an Old Dog and the mechanical appealed to me.
Pro
I can't compare this mouse to a Blue Tooth mouse (as I have not used a Blue Tooth mouse) but I found this wireless mouse to be very convent and easy to use. A neat feature is that when you logoff, you can unplug the antenna and store it on the underside of the mouse, which also turns off the mouse laser - thus saving the battery.
Con
After using it for two months I found the laser to not turn on sometimes after I removed the antenna from the underside of the mouse. However by re-inserting the antenna and then removing it the laser and mouse turned. This may be caused by my battery getting low, but cannot say for sure as I have yet to replace the battery.
I hope this helps those looking at the mouse for the 1st time.
Customer Review: Comments from a constant traveler Summary: 4 Stars
I'm on the road all the time. As such, I have a lot of assembling powerpoints, working excel spreadsheets, and the like on my tiny little laptop in hotel rooms. The track pad is nice, but after hours and hours on it, my fingers begin to go numb, I miss my targeted cells, and things generally start to go downhill. That's where this tiny little mouse comes into play. I can actually travel with it, and it's pretty darn good at what it does!
The good:
- Small enough to pop into your travel bag with your laptop, without noticing the size and weight
- Cordless. No more tangly mess trying to use the mouse!
- Runs on one AA battery. I use an Energizer rechargeable to stay green, and only have to charge it about once a month. Not too shabby.
- Works every time, without fail. I love just plugging it in and having it work.
- The USB stick stores in the mouse. I don't have to worry about misplacing one or the other. As a bonus, with the stick installed, the mouse won't turn on, preventing battery drain in the bag.
The bad:
- No battery charge level indicator. Sometimes I forget to charge it, and run out of juice. How depressing.
- It's pretty darn small. If you have big hands, it will probably not be the most comfortable mouse you've ever used.
Customer Review: Is working well but short leash Summary: 4 Stars
This is a good notebook mouse: Attractive, ergonomically good, responsive, and easy to install. The only issue, as others have noted, is that its range is SHORT. For me, any more than 2 unobstructed feet and the thing doesn't work. For those that always use it with their notebook in typical ways, I guess this is no problem as the usb dongle will always be right there. For me, I often connect the lappy to an external monitor and keyboard, and the usb port is a little far away at times. A little rearranging and I'll muster through but I wish I had a few more feet to work with. My old, now broken wireless rollerball mouse could manage 15 feet at least. Oh well. As I said, for typical use this mouse does the job well.
Oh. Some users have complained about jerkiness and unresponsiveness. I suspect this is due to range issues.
Update: I noticed that the link between mouse and usb dongle varies greatly depending on what angle the usb dongle presents to the mouse. The dongle has a longer straight side, then a curved end which tapers a little down to the other straight edge. This shorter edge is the one you'd want facing the mouse if you're having range and responsiveness issues. It's also possible to buy a usb extender of just a few inches or several feet if your setup needs it.
Customer Review: Best Notebook Mouse I've Ever Had Summary: 5 Stars
I really love this mouse. I picked it up for my personal laptop, but now I end up using it for my work laptop when I'm out of the office since it's so much more comfortable than the mouse I had for that. I don't use it every day, maybe once a week, but it's been working just fine for maybe three years now and shows no signs of wearing out.
The range on the transmitter is quite good, at least two to three feet away so it doesn't matter what USB port I use. I've never had any kind of lagging while moving my mouse pointer. It's just as fast as a mouse I plug in. The mouse comes out of standby instantly on its own when you move it slightly, so there's no hitting a button to wake it up. Battery life is very good for a single AA battery. I think I've only changed it a few times since I've had it. The transmitter fits neatly into the bottom of the mouse to turn it off when storing it.
I really can't say anything bad about the unit. The only reason I don't use it as my main mouse is that it's obviously a little smaller than a desktop mouse would be. It's still very comfortable to use and feels good in my hand even using it all day. If they're still selling them, I'll definitely replace my old one with the same thing when it finally does break.
