Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft Wheel Optical MouseCustomer Review: Actually pretty cheap all-round.. Summary: 2 Stars
I know from some of the other reviews that this mouse COULD be kinda 'exciting' compared to an ancient 'ball mouse'.. (Does anyone even have one of those anymore?) But when it comes to our modern 'sensor-mice' of today? This thing is actually pretty so-so. (though for a quick $19 buck fix.. propably ok.)
Like some others have stated, I've noticed that the wheel and buttons are none-too precise. TOO 'sensitive' when you wouldn't like them to be.. and alternatively not quite so responsive at other times. The buttons and wheel do routinely 'click/move' themselves which can be a minor annoyance. On top of that.. the whole thing has a bit of a 'cheap flimsy' feel to it.. and the wheel likewise has a very cheap clunky feel to it (I kid not - It's like a wheel on a cereal-box toy) and broke down on mine after a few months. And as someone else mentioned? The BIG RED light on the back (the things 'snazziest feature') is actually pretty annoying come movie time or likewise. (I have to turn it around as well)
After having tried out this one Microsoft mouse?.. I'm actually perplexed why so many people think they're so great. Seriously, the mouse that came with my old HP (which I wouldn't have even thought much of at the time) - spun wheels around this piece of junk.. and lasted a HELL OF A LOT longer!
Sorry, put the only impression I got from trying this one Microsoft mouse - was never to bother buying another one from them again.
2 stars for an barely-average sensor mouse at a minimal $20 bucks. That's it.
Customer Review: A perfectly fine mouse EXCEPT that the wheel scrolls itself frequently Summary: 2 Stars
A perfectly fine mouse EXCEPT that the wheel scrolls itself frequently, apparently because the designer tried to make the force required for each index of the wheel (each turn of the wheel through one "click") as effortless as possible, which was a nice attempt at ergonomic design, but it backfired, because as your hand whizzes back and forth between mouse and keyboard, the wheel frequently turns itself one click, apparently as if your finger left it perched between clicks. This is MADDENING for a number of reasons. You're trying to read, and the screen scrolls randomly away from your eye. You're holding down ctrl in Word, about to make a keyboard command, when the mouse suddenly scrolls itself; and in Word, ctrl-plus-mouse-scroll equals zoom resizing. So your zoom is frequently changing itself. It's annoying as h*ll and I can't understand why I put up with it for 12-18 months before one day I realized that it's more than worth $15 to go buy another mouse that doesn't pull this garbage a dozen times every day. So I solved the problem in a heartbeat by buying an equivalent mouse of another brand (Logitech). The new one is a blessing because its wheel is sufficiently "stiff". I never should have subscribed to the false economy of refusing to buy a replacement for the defective Microsoft mouse. It's more than worth it to remove the daily torture from your workday. If Microsoft fixes the wheel and labels the packaging to communicate that it has been improved, then this mouse would be OK to buy in future. There is nothing wrong with it otherwise.
Customer Review: Right button clicks by itself, and the red light is annoying. Summary: 1 Stars
Wow, how common are optical mouse these days. Yes, they were a minor miracle when they replaced ball mice, but you'd think by now you could take certain things for granted, like not having the right button click itself every time you drop the mouse more than a half an inch on to your mousepad. It makes a difference when you are in the heat of a computer game, or your little kid is just learning to use a computer. Get this mouse off the mousepad just a little bit and bring it down too hard and panels corresponding to the right mouse button start popping up on your screen.
And, kick back and relax with your favorite DVD on your computer monitor, and find yourself at eye level with the big red light at the back end of the mouse. Do I need a big red light to find this thing? No. Do I need a big red light to tell me that it is on? No. Do I need to turn this mouse around every time I watch a DVD on my computer. Yes, or there's a big red light in my face.
Nice going whoever thought of that. Probably the same people who put bright red and green and blue lights right under TV screens and monitor panels. Just because they can. We need more little bright lights right next to the things we want to watch.
Customer Review: Gaming Mouse Review Summary: 5 Stars
I play FPS games quite a bit and was looking to improve my game. I did a fair amount of research and tried three different mice. The first was a Deathadder 3.5g, which tracked great, but the buttons on the side annoyed me and it rubbed my pinkie the wrong way. I also tried a Intellimouse 3.0 which also tracked great but also had the annoying side buttons and whose right handed only grip wasnt the most controllable for gaming. Lastly, this mouse, which is a Mouse Wheel Optical, not a Mouse Optical Wheel as the title states, costs much less, and comes with the same laser as the intellimouse, has the same great tracking without the annoying side buttons and has a nice ambidextrous feel which is good for either palm or finger players. It is solid plastic, so it does not have the grip or comfort of a rubber mouse, but an old mouse pad and some glue can cure this problem while making the mouse better for us larger hand players. I would wholeheartedly recommend this mouse for any gamer, and in fact, if my research is correct, many gamers at the pro level would agree.
Customer Review: Comfortable Mouse Summary: 5 Stars
This Microsoft mouse has an excellent feel and is very easy to use. I love
it and it's the only mouse I'll be using, unless they stop making it then
I'll have to find another. Clicking and scrolling are very responsive. I
turned on sounds to start navigation and provide audible feedback making
sure I actually clicked by depressing the left or right buttons hearing a
'click' tone from my Creative T10 speakers.
This mouse has large 'feet' on its bottom that enable it to glide easily
on the mousepad as the optical sensor registers movement and places the
cursor around the screen. I recommend using a USB-PS2 adapter to free up
a USB port on your PC with this mouse. I installed the Intellipoint disk
first and installed the mouse. Large number of cursor options with this.
Buy this mouse, your hands will love it, and it's worth the price. I use
it with XP and ME computers. Might even try it on a WIN98 machine when my
old Microsoft heavy trackball finally dies. It's the closest thing to it.
