Customer Review: Decent low cost web-cam

We purchased this as an additional web-cam for our household. I have the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 / QuickCam Pro 9000 which we use on our laptops, but we were looking for one to stay put on the desktop. After searching reviews and prices I settled on the Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000.
Install and set-up was easy. The first time using it wasn't the best, but after tweaking some of the settings we got to where we were satisfied with both the sound and image. I would say that if you are just looking for a basic, easy to use web-cam at a very reasonable price, this is a very good option. But if you're going to be using it a lot and want better sound, picture and features there are better ones out there.

I was pleasantly surprised after connecting this webcam (installation was a cinch, unlike another I tried). My computer is no spring chicken and my video card would win no races at Aqueduct. Yet, this Microsoft LiveCam performs magnificently. I would have done a video review, but I didn't want to scare half the population with my old face and big eye glasses which the camera "too accurately" reproduces - I only freak out people I know with it. Kidding aside, yes the image is great and equal to costlier units. The cam itself is small. unobtrusive and needs no adjustments. It just works and works great. I wanted to give one to Uncle Harriet, but I don't think it works with a Commodore 64, but it works fantastically with computers a few years shy of Wi Fi.This review comes from the heart, I was never invited to coffee at Bill Gates' house. I was very happy when I bought this webcam. It was easy to install and very user friendly. I didn't have a problem with the sound or video quality. However, after three days, my system (Windows Vista) would not recognize the camera. I uninstalled the software and re-installed it several times. It works when I do this, but when I restart my computer, it won't recognize the camera until I disconnect it and reconnect it to the USB port. I have spent countless hours on the phone with Microsoft tech support (in India) and they have yet to solve my problem. I've been told they've "escalated" the tech support request and that one of their managers would be calling me, but a month later, it's still not working. I wouldn't recommend purchasing this product. It's just not worth the time and aggravation.Customer Review: Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000

The video camera aspect of this works good in well lit areas. Low light areas things become a whole different thing. I can not comment on the sound as I could NEVER get sound to work on this. Be it on Vista 64bit or Vista 32bit. Even downloaded drivers, etc. directly from Microsoft's website. If I could have given it a negative star for sound I would have. I would also give a negative star for lack thereof support from Microsoft. This was brand new and I called the next day and they wanted me to pay for support..?..? "Are you serious, this is brand new as of yesterday".
If you are wanting a camera for video only then this would be good/fair for the price. My built in camera on my Dell XPS laptop blows this out of the water! But if you are requiring sound - looks elsewhere...

I love this little camera! Very easily installed, very easy to use. I use mine with Skype, no problems at all.
Like some other users, I am annoyed by the stupid button on top, because I never use Windows Live Messenger and yet if you accidentally press the button while adjusting the camera the window automatically pops up - but no big deal, I just close the Messenger window and life goes on. :)
Only one futher complaint, and that is that the microphone can't be used separately. I study German online with Livemocha.com, and I thought I could use the microphone to record oral exercises but, alas, I cannot.
All in all, though, for the price of this little guy I'd definitely buy it again. It keeps me in touch with friends around the world. :)
