Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Microsoft Arc Mouse - BlackCustomer Review: Sleek but problematic Summary: 3 Stars
So there're a ton of reviews that say why this mouse is amazing. It IS a great mouse, sans the wheel clicking (and failure after a few weeks/months)
If you really must have this mouse (like me), then please keep in mind that eventually, the scroll wheel WILL break on you. I went through mine in six days. Other people have lasted up to three months. This fix will solve your scrolling problem, and eliminate the terribly loud scroll click.
1) Remove the batteries
2) Remove the two larger feet; this will expose four screws. Remove and set aside (do not lose these!)
3) Cut the sticker below the numbers under the barcode- use a sharp knife. Once removed you should see three screws; the center a hex.
4) Remove screws (If you do not have a hex screwdriver, you CAN carve away at the plastic with the knife and then use a thin-nose plier to losen the screw before using a +head to fully extract it. It's what I did.) The top should come straight off.
5) Lift up the top board; the scroll wheel should come off.
6) Stick tape onto the end and fold it in over itself; make sure it will fit back into the slot and that you can scroll easily (insert the batteries to test it; put the top back on but don't screw anything in just yet)
7) You should be able to scroll both directions again with a less audible clicking sound.
8) Replace screws and feet; enjoy!
This fix took me less than ten minutes, including carving the plastic. If you have all the tools, this will take you mere moments to bring out the best in this mouse. If you do not want to take the time to do this, look towards Logitech.
Customer Review: Great Simple Mouse for Both PC and Mac Summary: 5 Stars
For anyone looking for a good basic mouse for either a desktop or notebook, look no further.
To my knowledge, this mouse was designed for notebook users. However, it's great for either a desktop or notebook. The design is very unique in that you must fold it in order for the mouse to shut off. It also makes it more portable, fitting snugly into the carrying pouch provided. Underneath the mouse, there is a spot to stick the receiver once you are done using it; I think this is wonderful, and I won't be losing my receiver. With that being said, here's my list of Pros and Cons.
PROS:
* Intuitive design
* Works seamlessly with BOTH PC and Mac (I use both and this is wonderful)
* Battery Life
* Highly accurate
* Simple, and easy to use, no toying around here.
* Fits right into your hand
* Not overly sensitive
CONS:
* Only way to shut off mouse is by folding it
* Feels a bit small for people with larger hands, wish this was a full size mouse
* Clicks are not as robust as I would like (on the left and right click buttons)
* Programs must be downloaded in order to use the remaining two butttons (the scroll click and the one on the left)
* "Back" button is a bit far up the mouse
Overall, the Pros BY FAR outweigh the Cons. The cons are just annoying things, rather than severe performance issues. Overall, I am happy with my purchase and would purchase this mouse again if given the choice. The $30 price tag can't be beat for a mouse with such simplicity, style, feel, compatibility, and durability.
Customer Review: Pleased with performance Summary: 4 Stars
I've been looking for a mouse that is portable and close to full size as possible. I have to say I'm very pleased with the comfort and the basic function of this mouse.
Pros: The Arc mouse tracks well and the scroll wheel has the noticeable feedback that I am accustom to. Works well on multiple surfaces and textures like multicolor office carpeting but I have not tried a glass top surface. I am fond of the matte finish as I don't care for slippery glossy buttons. The way my hand (medium size) sits on the mouse and fingers rest on the buttons is very natural. Button clicks are with minimal effort. It's very pleasing visually and when folded up for storage it's surprisingly compact. I like that it has a small storage bag for travel.
Cons: The side button placement is awkwardly forward for back paging through websites. My thumb when resting (right handed) on the mouse is no where near the side button. The side button is only on the left side of the mouse may be a setback for left handed people. If you like a full sized mouse this is probably as close as you will get for the compact design, but still may be on the small side for large hands.
Overall I really like this mouse and would recommend to anyone for full time use not just travel. I also had purchased the Arc Touch mouse and would recommend the Arc mouse over the Arc Touch. The Touch has a cool factor but has some characteristics in comfort and general function that keep me coming back to the regular Arc mouse.
Customer Review: Built for Speed. Not for Comfort. Summary: 2 Stars
Pros: Super good lucks, a reasonably small sized receiver, when folded smaller than most, nice faux-suede carrying case, accurate laser tracking.
Cons: Horrific ergononics. Positively unreachable button on side that will require you to actually release your grip and move your hand up the mouse in order to use it (a good inch or more out of place), no molded shaping that gives your hand a sense of 'rest' as it sits on the mouse. The space below the mouse is a place where your pinky finger will search longingly and unsuccessfully for a surface upon which to rest but instead, will find only cold, empty space.
I'm all for sleek aerodynamic design but it takes some gall to pronounce on the box of this product that it is "Built For Comfort" when such comfort can only be derived if your hand is perfectly flat and your thumb is the same length as your index finger. For THAT person I say to you, buy it now sir!
For the rest of us more ordinary folks, there isn't a single, solitary aspect of this design that proves to be at all comfortable. Buy it in the hope that it's daring design helps to start some small talk with the hottie seated next to you in a crowded cafe, but not for comfort!
I am now waiting to see if the scroll wheel fails as seems so common in other reviews.
UPDATE:
I returned it. Comfort matters.
Customer Review: Microsoft Arc Mouse Summary: 4 Stars
I like this mouse. Here's why:
1. The size. It's a full-sized mouse, yet it folds up nicely for transportation.
2. The laser is accurate. Finally! A laser mouse you can use on your bed sheets/blankets/pillows without skipping horribly. Does it work on a glass tabletop? Sorry, I didn't try it, but I would think not.
3. Appearance. Sure, this may not be a big deal to anyone, but it looks good -- well, the black one does anyway...
4. Noise. The buttons don't have a pronounced "plastic click" sound. Some may find this to be a disadvantage, but my wife is thanking me dearly for not keeping her awake when I'm on my laptop late at night.
5. The small USB plug -- not quite as small as the Logitech Nano, but close.
Of course, there are some shortcomings:
1. Functionality. This is a very basic device -- Right click/Left click/Scroll/Back are your functions. That's it; no browser forward, email, volume, etc. features here. To me, not a big deal. To you, it might be.
2. The browser 'back' button is WAY too far down toward the nose of the mouse. I can't imagine the prehensile anatomy of whoever thought this would be ergonomically viable to us modern-day hominids.
All things considered, I like this mouse a lot. It could have more features, but what it lacks in that regard, it makes up for in comfort and styling.
