I recently discovered there was this battery pack for my Nikon D40 and the idea this gave my camera the professional look and feel of a professional camera. As well as giving the extra grip for supporting during vertical photography. Although I am not pleased at having to us the remote trigger option for the shutter release in vertical shooting, the D40 was not made for this modification. So if you want a camera with this built in, then buy one. But since I am not in the market for that type, yet, I appreciate being able to have this option of longer battery support and the stability of vertical shooting.Customer Review: Flimsy Junk At Best

Not a great product. This is flimsy cheap thin plastic. I ended up junking it after one use. Does not fit the d40 batteries. I upgraded to a D700 and didn't even give this as part of the package to the gal who bought my D40. The battery compartment latch was broken when I got it and didn't keep the batteries tight in the compartment. Don't even think about using regular batteries - they won't work at all (not that I would use them, just tested it out).
Save your pennies and purchase the actual Nikon one - or better yet, save your pennies and upgrade to a better camera!

I received the Targus TG-BGD40 Battery Grip for Christmas. I absolutely love it. I got my D40 in may of last year and have really gotten into photography since. When I bought the camera, I bought an extra battery to go with it. Since getting the Battery Grip, I don't have to change the battery when it gets low. It easily lasts longer than any photo shoot I could possibly do in one day. The best thing about the grip is the feel. I have big hands and it fits so much better and also has a real professional look. Well worth the money. I am very happy with it.Customer Review: Yeah.... ehhhh

This grip is pretty good... feels cheap though.
As others have mentioned, the vertical shutter release is worthless. Sure its the D40's fault for not supporting such a grip, but I would rather it be left out and just have the grip carry two batteries.
It shares the batteries well, I use the grip to power my camera during time lapses.
To get it sit flat against the bottom of the camera you have to give it a hard smack.
All the features that a grip should have (those that are supported by the camera at least,) but nothing amazing

Just received my Targus Digital TG-BGD40 Battery Grip for Nikon D40/D40x/D60 today. Immediately installed it and tried its functions. Works as advertised. The texture surprisingly is almost the same with my D60. The shutter button works, but is not that responsive at times. I would not use it alot, so I don't mind at all. The size and fit is great. I just wonder why they did not cover up the tripod hole. I could see the battery from it.
Would try it tonight, and see how this works in the field. Holloween night, good timing.
