Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Targus Digital TG-BGD40 Battery Grip for Nikon D40/D40x/D60

Customer Review: Overall Does a Great Job
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my second grip. The prior one did not fit flush with the body and, while that did not affect the performance, it was not what I wanted with my Nikon. This Targus TG-BGD40 is a great fit to the D60 body and the finish also more closely resembles that of the camera. I do like the feel of the grip. Have not tried it yet on the tripod but I am not expecting any surprises there. As with other grips either 2-EN-EL9 batteries or 6 AA batteries will work. That is a great option for those just in case times. The vertical shutter function works but do not expect miracles with it. For the money, I am quite pleased with the product and what it provides. As a side note, it will be hard to beat the price for a new unit offered by Amazon. Definitely recommended.

Customer Review: Worked well for over a year
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this battery grip on my Nikon D-60 for over a year and have never had one minute of problems. I get over 1800 shots between charges. I forget to charge the batteries so having two helps. I also like the AA insert that goes along with the grip. If I cannot get somewhere and recharge, I can almost always buy AA batteries to get through the day.

I hope my wife don't read this, but yes I dropped my camera once and it landed on the grip. No damage from a 4 foot fall.

After the first couple times, I never used the vertical option. It doesn't auto-focus and its just as easy to hold my hand on top. Again, I have this grip for the long intervals between charging. Also helped the camera fit my hands better.

Customer Review: Good grip but it discharges your batteries
Summary: 3 Stars

If you are buying this so you can use the extra power over a few days, then don't. If you leave you batteries in the grip, turn the camera off and let it sit over night, you will come back to totally discharged batteries, whether Nikon battery packs or NiMH 6 AAs.

As a grip it is great, and I use it to shoot concerts, when I am going to takes hundreds of photos in 2-3 hours.

As a vertical grip it is not so great, but that is Nikon's fault. The vertical trigger has to work through the infrared interface so there is lag and no continuous shooting.

If you can live with the downsides then get it. Also be sure to get the 6 AA battery holder - you will be glad you did.

Customer Review: The most worthwhile accessory I have ever bought
Summary: 5 Stars

Once I attached the grip,I've never taken it out!
At first I know about Targus brand; it's reliable. As it claims it compatible for D40 and D60; however, my D5000 also completely fits well with it.

The grip increases usability in vertical shots. Still, it takes time for infrared setting then I think it is not usable in practice for taking only 2-3 shots then back to normal horizon shots.

Materials are good in terms of weight, patterns, non-slippery grip, and supporting two standard EL-9 battery as well as add-on 6 x AAA accessory.

It is worth +120 dollars with the one fifth actual price. This item is rock!

Customer Review: Excellent addition to your gear
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my D40X and was totally satisfied with it. While it does add weight to the camera unit, especially if also using a large lens, it does render the set more solid in hand and also I had less concern about really tightening the tripod fixture to it rather than the camera body itself. I use a Bogen/Manfrotto unit with a large plate. I bought another one of these grips for my D90 since the D40X was sold shortly after purchasing this one.
Using two batteries at once means you can be out there with lots of battery power. Buy this product; I was happy I did. BTW, I shopped around a lot for the best price and settled with DBROTH who sent it promptly.
