Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Targus Digital TG-BGD40 Battery Grip for Nikon D40/D40x/D60

Customer Review: It fits the D3000 too!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just purchased this grip from Amazon the other day. First off, AMAZON rocks because it was shipped crazy fast so I was stoked when it showed up on my doorstep a day before I expected it!

The grip fit snuggly against the bottom of the camera and fits smoothly along the whole camera except the front corner but is is minimal and doesnt get in the way at all. Some other reviews indicated that the grip didnt feel good, I disagree. It feels comfortable and I havent noticed any slipping. I was shooting bridals this weekend and it was about 95 degrees out. We were all sweating and the grip didnt slip at all.

The D3000 is the smallest in the Nikon DSLR lineup and this grip makes it much easier for my fat hands to hold it. I am not overly impressed with the vertical shutter release because it doesnt have a 2 stage shutter release to set the auto-focus. However, I learned that you can program the AE-L button near the viewfinder to act as a auto-focus button so now when I use my vertical release, I just push the AE-L button with my left thumb and then everything works splendidly!

I would absolutely recommend this to anyone with a D3000. Be sure to buy a 2nd battery. I havent used the adapter to utilize the 6AA batteries because the 2 nikon batteries have lasted for 2 weeks now with no recharge and I have shot nearly 900 pictures in that time. But its a nice back-up to have.

Customer Review: This grip is just awesome!

I don't have big hands but decided to get a battery grip for my Nikon D60 for taking portrait style pictures. I saw these at Walmart but they were $99+tax. That was too much so I looked and found them here. For $30 you can't beat the price and the fit is just perfect for the D40 and D60 cameras. If you're even considering getting a grip, buy this one and you won't be sorry. It makes handling the camera easier and makes it look more professional. You can just use 1 battery in the grip if you want so you really don't even need to go buy batteries! This even comes with an insert that lets you use the grip with 6 AA batteries to run the camera in an emergency. You just can't beat that. The only reason I bought this was because it looked like a nice accessory and for $30 with no tax and free shipping, I said okay, but now I wish I had bought one a looong time ago. You're not going to find a better deal than this, I promise you and they are going to eventually run out of these so if it's still for sale and you need a grip, this is the one for you for practically nothing. The finish looks professional and it fits very snug on my D60. Even has the tripod mount on the bottom. I just can't say enough about how cool it looks now and how cheap I got it!!!!

Customer Review: NIKON D40 TARGUS BATTERY GRIP
Summary: 3 Stars

Targus TG-BGD40 Battery Grip for Nikon D40 AH well let me start off by saying i dont like it much it feels to bulky not sturdy cheap not what i expected at all it feels bad it takes very little work getting on right till the end and you have to force one side in and screw it real tight which takes alot cause its too small its not comfortable when you have AA batteries which when you get to low it will let you take pics but it wont put them on the card or show you or even show the menu they could have completely outdone themselves if one person actually used this b4 shipping this is a terrible product i would not recommend it in less you where strapped for cash and really needed it it only works on single shot because nikon went and didn't put a communicator to the grip to tell the camera what to do it send in infra red beam out so you cant use the regular shutter release the only good part is it does do well with batteries nikon batteries and the shutter release oh another lil comment is the inferred led comes out on the front of the grip witch makes it hard to hold regularly sorry this was simple no periods

Customer Review: Works Great
Summary: 5 Stars

This battery grip has lived up to it's promises. I bought this with two new, 1800mah(or whatever it is) batteries and it was a month before I had to recharge them, even then I was still at 67% power but I was about to go out of town for a few days and wanted to top them off. Though an amateur photographer I have two children so my camera is always out. I tend to shoot with a 1.8 50mm lens and try to avoid using the flash to get more natural light, however I do flash when necessary. So the battery power that I walk around with now is ample.

I have pretty big hands and the D40 was a little small to hold. That was my primary motivation for buying this product. My D40 was/is my first dive into the DSLR world so I didn't want to spend a fortune, knowing these grips were also available I went for it. The grip makes it a lot easier to hold the camera as well as bringing some of the weight back which helps keep my wrist from fatiguing.

The grip fight wonderfully on my first try, nice and snug to the camera body and the texture patterns match almost exactly. I wish it wasn't plastic and had the same rubber feel as the camera does but for $34.99 I wasn't really expecting that.

Customer Review: very nice

I've really enjoyed this battery grip with my Nikon D40x. I got this at the same time as Nextop-2 Packs Nikon type EN-EL9 Brand New 1800mAh Li-ion REPLACEMENT Batteries + Compatible Wall & Car Charger (FREE European Adaptor) for Nikon D40, D40x, D60 and the extended shooting time is amazing, and for not too much money at all. The extra amount of grip is surprisingly helpful for stability, as well. The only unfortunate thing is that when using the shutter release on the grip in vertical orientation, you can't push it half way to auto-focus and then all the way to shoot. It's just a one-push shot. Also, if you aren't familiar with how to take off the battery door on your camera, you might spend some time figuring that out, so let me tell you right now: just open it up to about a 45-degree angle and then twist so that you're pulling one end of the "hinge" out and the whole thing will just pop out. You can then store it in the side of the battery grip.

Overall, very impressed with this battery grip, especially for the price. I highly recommend.
