Fantastic product! I am studying professional photography and have used several different cameras. I settled on the Nikon D40 which I'm still not sure was the best idea - anyway, I am over 6 feet tall with large hands. The D40 is a tiny camera, at the time of this writing it is the 2nd smallest dSLR on the market. And while I did get used to it's size I felt it was too small to balance large lenses comfortably. So I decided to buy a cheap battery grip off eBay but an acquaintance insisted I get the "Targus" brand grip - he said he had tried the cheap ones and the Targus and that he only liked the performance and finish of the Targus. OK so I ordered the Targus grip and I've been using for a few weeks now, it's a fantastic product - it completely changes the feel of the D40 but does not noticeably add any weight - it's practically weightless. For my large hands this grip makes the D40 so amazingly comfortable, it's awesome. It has a vertical shutter release too, but the D40 doesn't support that directly so the vertical shutter release is actually an "infrared remote" built into the grip. I don't use the vertical shutter release, but I have tried it - and I have compared it to my "infrared remote control" (another accessory I don't use) and they work the same. IR is what it is. You can not fault this grip for the vertical shutter release - the manufacturers did as best as can be done on a D40. IR shutter releases are not as nice as the camera's primary shutter release but they do work "OK". As for size the grip is perfect for anyone with "medium" or "large" hands. As for battery life : The Nikon D40 with it's single lithium rechargeable battery (EN-EL9) is truly an "electricity sipper" (not a guzzler) - I get several outings worth of shots off of a single lithium battery (EN-EL9) - with two batteries? Oh man, amazing. I think it's rated at 4000 shots (under ideal temperature and flash usage of course) - what is that like? I charge the two lithium batteries (EN-EL9) once a week, but I bet I could do it once a month. Seriously, this "battery grip" truly adds a lot of electricity to this camera. And just in case there is a handy dandy "AA" (double A) battery tray, it can convert the camera for using six "AA" - what's good about that? Not much, the lithium rechargeable "EN-EL9" battery is really powerful and compact, but it's not something you can find at any local store - if you travel somewhere and run out of electricity and can't find the time or place to charge your "EN-EL9" batteries, you can buy "AA" batteries just about anywhere in the world - an unlikely scenario but the added versatility is great for the traveling snapshooter. For about $50 I simply can't say enough about the Targus battery grip - if you have medium or large hands, and a Nikon D40, D40x, or D60 - Buy it. You will love it. Now that I have used mine for a few weeks I never ever remove it :)
