Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Memorex 8.5Gb/ 2.4x DVD+R Dual Layer (25-Pack Spindle)

Customer Review: Good value at a good price, with a caveat
Summary: 4 Stars

The price of these discs is pretty cheap over all and the quality definitely on the good to great side.

The only issue is that if you are purchasing these in order to have movies that are playable on your stand alone DVD player, I can't stress enough that you CHECK WITH THE MANUFACTURER OF YOUR DVD PLAYER to see if it is dual layer (+ or -) capable. The player I had was +/- R capable, but not DL (dual layer) and refused to play the discs. Purchasing the Oppo 971 player eliminated this playback issue.

If you are looking for more storage for data, you almost can't go wrong as all the data of put on these discs seems to be reliable. As with all burnable media, how long they actually retain the data is an area of debate.

Customer Review: Memorex DL do not work - BUYER BEWARE!
Summary: 1 Stars

Avoid these. Bought a 10pak, and burned 3 coasters out of the gate. Sold the remainder on eBay, and bought Verbatim DVD+RL (part 95166). These work 100% of the time (presently have burned about 100 with 0 coasters).

As it was explained to me, Memorex buys their discs from other manufacturers. They don't make their own media. Verbatim makes their own discs, and control the quality of every batch. Memorex may get theirs from a number of manufacturers, each using different quality standards, thus giving you no guarantee between discs of whether they will work or not. I've seen more then a few people say "I bought 10 that worked great, then bought 10 more, and all those were junk". No consistency at all. BUYER BEWARE!

Customer Review: If your drive will burn them properly, they are a good medium
Summary: 4 Stars

Memorex has always been a mixed bag for me. But it is hard to find economical DVD±R DL disks, so I figured I'd give these a try. Well I have several DVD burners, and what's nice is every one I have tried has made a successful burn, but only some claimed to give a successfully burn. What I mean is my NEC 3520 said burned failed at the end of burning, but the disk worked fine in it's entirety (used for data). When I burned it with my NEC 3550, no errors, and a fine burn.

So if you have an older DVD burner, be weary of this medium. But if you have several different burners to try it on, then you should find at least one that'll burn right. Also, just because it says it failed, check the disk to see if it actually did.

Customer Review: Great quality at cheap prices...
Summary: 4 Stars

A lot of people complain about Memorex's quality. But I have been using Memorex DVD+R and DVD+R DL since past 2-3 years and never faced any problems. The quality is amazing and rarely ever I get a coaster. The burn success rate is more than 95%. I have used LG and Panasonic DVD Burners and they have worked very well with these DVDs without any firmware upgrades. People who are facing problems with these DVDs should consider upgrading their DVD burner's firmware. The only reason why I am giving it 4 stars and not 5 is that the maximum burning speed for these DVDs is 2.4x and not higher.
It is worth every penny. My recommendation to all those who dont want to spend double the money on brands like Verbatim or TDK, etc.

Customer Review: Dual Layer DVD's
Summary: 5 Stars

Memorex 8.5Gb dual layer DVD's are great.. I have used better then 1/2 the pack that I purchased and would but them again.. HOWEVER my problem is not witrh the DVD but the fact that when you BURN to dual layer if you do not have a DUAL layer reader you can not access data burnt to it.

It may 'User Error' or it could simply be that the hardware that is needed to take advantage of this must be standered.. either way.. I am sticking with single layer DVD's so I can use it on all my systems.

HOWEVER... if I ever do purchase any more Dual Layer's in the future Memorex is the brand I will go with it..

You get what you pay for and for the price you get a heck of a lot with Memorex!
