Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Memorex 8.5Gb/ 2.4x DVD+R Dual Layer (25-Pack Spindle)

Customer Review: 8 discs, all coasters
Summary: 1 Stars

I would first like to say I have been recording, editing, creating dvd and cd's for 6 years, I have used every program and burner imaginable. I build PCs for a living, also make backups of the dvd's we own for my wife as our
son likes to get hold of the originals.
I have tried these discs on 4 burners in 2 different computers, and tried the results in no less that 7 dvd players (which include an xbox, a portable, an xbox 360, a pioneer, philips, apex, sony dvd players) these
discs work in nothing. It is NOT a booktype issue, its simply these discs are no good!
All the discs are coasters no matter what program I use or dvd burner I use to create the media image.
I have NEVER come across this EVER. I am VERY experienced in the creating of dvd and dvd backups
these discs are by far the worst I have ever used

Update August 2006
Having complained about these discs, Amazon were kind enough to send a replacement. I have managed to burn about 40% of the replacements succesfully, but they still dont warrant higher than a 2 star rating. The inconsistency of these discs is a huge problem. If you want +R DL media, stick with verbatim.

Customer Review: Works with the right firmware
Summary: 5 Stars

I had an NEC OEM shipped by Dell. After a few coasters, I researched the reasons why. Unlike DVD+R discs, the DL discs work only with specific drives and specific firmwares. If you use NEC, you need 2.18 version. You can easily upgrade your firmware by going to NEC site.

Once you fix that, these discs work like a champ. More affordable than other DLs.

Just an addition after several months of using the dual layer: Once in a while you will come across Memorex DVD+R DLs that are defective. It would copy fine but when you try to play it (even on the computer), it will give an error message. Although Memorex offers lifetime warranty, I have not been able to get through to customer service. After a week of sending them a message, no response.

If you want to play any dual layer media to play on your home DVD player, you need to set the booktype to DVD-ROM. This advice is not specific just to Memorex. You need to do that with all brands.

Customer Review: Work well with my NEC ND-2510A
Summary: 5 Stars

I upgraded my NEC ND-2510A to the latest firmware a while ago, and I've had no problems with these disks. I've been using AnyDVD (to break CSS encryption) along with CloneDVD to copy a few Scrubs DVDs that were getting a bit scratched. So far, I'm 3 for 3. I'd recommend these to anyone who's flashed their drive to the latest firmware.

Update: After attempting to play these disks in a number of set-top DVD players, I have found one in my house that will not play after the layer break. This was a very old Mitsubishi player, one of the first affordable DVD players. To anyone who has problems playing these disks, I would suggest a new set-top DVD player. You wouldn't expect a 10-year-old CD player to play CD-Rs and CD-RWs, and you shouldn't automatically assume that a 5-year-old DVD player will play these, either. You can pick up a brand-name set-top box for $40, so there's really no tremendous need to complain.

Customer Review: Very practical dual-layer recording
Summary: 5 Stars

I use these disks with my Mac G4 Quicksilver and a self-installed, internal Pioneer DVR-108 burner. I have used Toast 7 and 8. Fortunately the combination is practically flawless, for these dual-sided disks are much more expensive than single-sided DVDs. I reserve them for very large files or long movies. They play on every DVD-player I own.

My only reservation is that the upper surface has a design which makes marking with a pen a bit awkward. I would have preferred a pattern of simple lines on which to write. The pattern is probably intended to make sure that the user puts the disk in right-side-up.

Note that double-sided disks generally do not write as quickly as do single-sided disks. It's just another consideration.

Also note that double-sided disks do not quite give twice the capacity of a single-sided disk. You really pay for that added capacity of the DVD DL.

Customer Review: Fine media but not capable of 8x
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought these to burn video DVDs to play on a 2nd generation (10+ year old) DVD player and they work fine. That's about the best endorsement of compatibility I can give: That DVD player won't play half the discs from Netflix.

The only caveat I found is that you really cannot burn these at 8x as the packaging claims. The faster you burn a disc, the less time each 'bit' spends under the laser. Beyond a certain point the DVD burner is at full power and cannot toast the bit as thoroughly as it would like. I have found 4X to work fine, but it will depend on your DVD drive. At 8X the ancient DVD player gets the occasional macroblock (video glitch). Yes, it will take 25 minutes to burn a dual-layer DVD at 4x. Better than a coaster in half the time!

Also, these discs do have a silver label surface, not a bare plastic top like my super cheap single-layer DVD+Rs.
