Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Memorex 8.5GB 8X Double Layer DVD+R (50pk Spindle)Customer Review: Run away from Memorex Summary: 1 Stars
I did not purchase this item from Amazon, but wanted to warn people not to waste their money on this garbage....
I generally use Sony or Phillips discs, since they both work without problems in both my home recorder and my computer. I don't often use DL, but I've never had a problem with the Sony or even the Verbatim DL discs that I've used in the past. This week I needed some DL discs and the store I stopped at were out of Sony and only had Memorex. After going through the entire stack of discs, there was only two that worked. Not only that, but the last disc in the stack was stuck like glue to the clear plate at the bottom of the spindle.
I wasted a lot of money on this garbage.
I went out to another store and they had the Sony DL discs. Not a single one had a problem, so I know it's not me nor my computer.
When I mentioned this to a friend of mine, who is a retired IT, he said he never uses Memorex because they have a horrible reputation on their DVD discs.
I will never buy a Memorex product again. Sad what they've turned into.
Customer Review: Great for parties--as drink coasters Summary: 1 Stars
In a nutshell: don't buy these. I got a new 50-pack of these and have yet to have any get past even burning the Lead-in track. I thought I had a catastrophic problem with my computer--what with not being able to burn any of these on three different DVD-DL-capable drives. Then it dawned upon me that I had just gone from a MUCH older pack of Memorex DVD DL's to a new pack of these. After doing some web research, I learned that Memorex DVD-DL's are OEM'ed from different vendors with an apparent lack of quality control. Per suggestions, I bit the bullet and bought some Verbatim DVD DL's--those made in Singapore, NOT from their new outsourced supplier in India--at roughly double the cost. But it was like night and day: every one of the Verbatim's burned and played without problems. Going through the trash last night, I counted that I had tossed nine of these Memorex DVD DL's because they wouldn't burn. That took the sting out of buying the Verbatim's. Just enter--or copy/paste--"Verbatim DVD DL" in the Amazon search box above. That's a lot less aggravating, trust me....
Customer Review: Ok, it seems these discs will work, but at 4x or slower Summary: 3 Stars
I actually purchased this product by accident, mistakenly thinking these were Verbatim discs, which are superb. The quality of the Memorex discs is abysmal. I don't know how they can be marketed, and I'm not sure why Amazon continues to carry them. Yes, they are the lowest cost discs by price, but not by value, when you consider the failure rate is astronomical. The first two discs I pulled out of the case failed. I immediately switched to Verbatim, and achieved success (as always). Why waste your money, just to say you purchased low-priced junk?
UPDATE 7/4/2010: I read several other reviews that mentioned the need to slow the software to a lower speed in order to get these discs to work. While it's unfortunate to have to make adjustments in order to get a product to work (the Verbatim discs can burn at any speed without issue - BUY VERBATIM - they're worth the money), I was determined not to lose the entire cost of my Memorex purchase, so I slowed burn speed to 4x, and thus far, no failures. I'll keep you posted if things change for the worse again.
Customer Review: No problems with burning issues Summary: 5 Stars
I make and edit DVDs and burn to these. I have never had a problem with having to toss a disc because I couldn't burn to it (EXCEPTION- I did have one disc in an older pack from a previous order) that the double layers came apart. It squeaked when slightly flexed and I didn't attempt to use.)
My last order of five spindles (250 discs) I have had no issues with the first 150 discs. I am not expecting problems with the remaining 100 discs either. I use these for my business and cannot afford to have disc burning issues. I have been happy with this purchase. I just keep waiting for prices to drop on the DL discs.
If you experience problems, or before you order, ENSURE you hardware supports these discs. Ensure your driver is up to date.
UPDATE September 2010
I continue to purchase Memorex discs exclusively and have not had any burn failures. Have purchased from multiple sources and continue to have outstanding results. However, my computer uses SATA DVD burners. Possibly the hardware makes a difference?
Customer Review: Works great on Intel Dual Core iMac running OS 10.4.11 Summary: 5 Stars
I've burned about a dozen of these so far, with 100% success rate, using the built-in Superdrive on my Intel Dual Core iMac, with Toast Titanium 8.0.3 as the burn program.
One word of warning, though... if you plan to use these for extended play or higher definition DVDs, be aware that NOT ALL DVD PLAYERS recognize them. We have two DVD players in our house, both from Pioneer, and they run flawlessly on one while on the other (the older of the two) they stall and sputter. The one that runs them was a $25 special, so it's not a question of high-end vs. low-end players (the other one was about $30, but it's two years old now, compared to the other one, which was purchased in November 2007).
Therefore, if you have a newer Macintosh and use Toast Titanium 8.0, you can almost certainly count on these discs burning cleanly; with Windows machines it seems to be something of a crapshoot, based on the other reviews (too many system variables to make any sort of predictions).
