Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Memorex 8.5GB 8X Double Layer DVD+R (50pk Spindle)

Customer Review: Every great deal has it's small catches...
Summary: 5 Stars

Price (5 out of 5)
I have bought a LOT of blanks dvd's in my time - TDK, Philips, Sony, Verbatim, and even Dynex - I have tried them all. Since I have literally burn through over 1,000 dvd's in the past 3 years I always look for the best deal for good quality dvd-r's. For me, Memorex has always been the least expensive on a consistent basis. I got my dvd-dl 50pk here for $28 and free shipping in May 2010. Other brands usually cost between $25 and $35 for a 25 pack!

Quality (4 out of 5 for false advertising)
I think Memorex's only problem is that these disks are advertised as 8x. They're not. They almost always mess up on 8x speed. I always use 2.4x just to be safe although 4x may work. So far no duds on the 2 packages I bought (the newest from Fry's). EXCEPT for that first disk burned on 8x. (I use Nero 8 to burn everything.) It's worth the deal if you don't mind paying the price of slower burning for really cheap disks.

Design (4 out of 5)
I love that the disks are white and the memorex logo is unobtrusive.
Small con - the new stupid packaging. If you aren't careful screwing the top on all the way the top falls off and so do your disks if you're lazy like me.

Customer Review: You are an idiot if you buy these discs!!!

Yes, it takes one to know one so I feel in a position of authority to review these god-awful discs fairly. I was having really bad "write error" problems with the absolute junk Ritek discs from CD [...] (NEVER buy from these people, they have no customer support and never admit to mistakes). I got the Memorex at Staples because I was just so certain that, for the price, they must work. Well, guess what, the discs being sold as Memorex were actually, you guessed it, Ritek!!!! And, no surprise, they worked about as well as Bernie Madoff's honesty quotient. 4 failures for every one that worked. It took about 3 hours time to copy 2 discs because of the "write error" issue. The copying software maker told me that Sony and Verbatim were the two DVD DL discs that worked the best. Incidentally, if you have a phillips dvd installed on your computer, like Dell, be aware that only very good DVD DL discs, like the aforementioned, will work. So, after dropping about 90 dollars to copy a $17 DVD set of two, I think I'll stick to Verbatim discs, use them only when I have to, and play video games in the mean time. That way I can imagine all the Zombies as Ritek employees and Memorex CEO's.

Customer Review: STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT AT ALL COSTS!! PLEASE READ FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!

I read a bunch of reviews just like this and thought "Well they probably just had bad luck or whatever". Then i received my 50 pack Memorex double layer dvd's in the mail and got right to burning. The first 10 or so worked fine so i thought "why did all those people say they weren't working? They must've been burning them incorrectly" After that EVERYTHING went downhill. I've tried 16 dvd's since then and every one in a row crashed mid-burning and not ONE has been successful, NOT ONE! It holds 8.5 gigs and being scared that putting too much on them was the reason behind them not working, i tried only putting 6 gigs or so of data on them and STILL none work. This was absolutely the biggest waste of money i've ever spent. Forty bucks down the drain i could've spent on Verbatum, which i heard even though they're more expensive, ppl have never had problems with and it's worth every penny. Now i can't even buy those cuz i spent my money on this crap. I BEG whomever is reading this review, DO NOT BUY THESE!! Spend the extra money on Verbatum and get a guaranteed pleasant result! The ONLY reason i gave this product 1 star is because it wouldn't let me give it ZERO stars, like it deserves.

Customer Review: Very unreliable

I used to buy dual layer disks at Sam's club. They carried Verbatim 50-pack, and I never had any problem with Verbatim discs. Unfortunately, now they have only Memorex, so I decided to try them. This experience was horrible. Out of 50 disks, more than half failed during burning. Most often, the reason was "could not perform disc at once" or something like that. Sometimes, the burning stopped at the first minute.

I used external LG burner. It worked perfectly with Verbatim, no failed dual layers. But from Memorex more than half I had to throw away. I used two types of software - Nero and Ashampoo. Ashampoo (in this case) worked little better, but still many failures with Memorex. I actually do not know if there will be any problems during playing, I did not have time to check. But I've read from other review that even if Memorex were recorded, then during playing there were mistakes. Nero constantly had failures, just very few disks had been recorded sucsessfully. I do not think that this is a problem with burners or software, because I used two softwares and the result for Memorex was bad in both. I would not recommend it for anybody.

Edited Review...Buyer Beware.

When buying these disks for data, they initially wrote, seemingly with no problem. Now, however, I'm running into increasing problems, especially in writing movie backups to these disks. Using the "verify" function, I learned why my disks were skipping and freezing, for there are numerous disk errors. Even the disks used for data that I thought were okay are, now that I'm checking them, are full of errors. They are, alas, worthless.

One expects better quality from Memorex, but it's sadly lacking. From what I'm hearing (a lot), Verbatim +R DL slow speed is the way to go on dual layered disks. Out of my initial 50 ordered, more than 40 contain serious errors. This also is experienced by others on various forums. Bottom line: Stay away from these disks! They're junk. If you've written photos or other data to them, check them with a good disk integrity program and salvage what you can. And use the "verify" function on all of your software. This will detect the write failures right after the process.

I wish I could change my rating, but I can't, unfortunately.
