Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Memorex 8.5GB 8X Double Layer DVD+R (50pk Spindle)

Customer Review: Big Disappointment by this Manufacturer.
Summary: 2 Stars

I have been buying Memorex DVD blank media for a long time. Never had any problem until recently when I purchased this Memorex DVD+R dual layer 50 Pk Spindle. I was so confident that this was the best blank media that money can buy..boy was I wrong.
It seems that DVD+R dual layer blank media is good for recording data only. I am a huge collector of movies and concert shows and when I inserted a few of these blank disks into my Panasonic dvd recorder I got nothing but error messages saying "There might be a problem with this disk, etc." and thus, I had to proceed with instructions to make this disk functionable. Some worked and others failed. Out of 50 blank disks I have only 5 that are working so far. Can you imagine going through this process to get one of these disks to work before the start of a movie.
I tried to get a refund from the seller I purchased these disks from and was told that I had to contact the manufacturer. Sorry, No Refund!!
Memorex DVD-Rs do work very well in my Panasonic DVD recorder however, but this experience has forced me to seek another brand which I will eventually purchase in the future.
Could be I had a bad batch. But what a price I had to pay.

Customer Review: Price outweighs performance
Summary: 4 Stars

I have now used over 150 of these Memorex discs and have been overall pretty pleased. There's no denying that there are duds in here, but the fact that they are more than 50% cheaper than the Verbatims makes up my mind in the favor of the Memorex's. Some people have claimed the failure rate is around 50% so you are better off getting the Verbatims, in my experience this is tacitly not true. I'd say the high end of the failure rate is 10%, and probably less than that. So yeah, you'll end up throwing 5 of these away because they don't burn correctly, you still got WAY more for your money than the Verbatims.

One caveat, it REALLY does depend on your burner. I had an old Sony burner that couldn't burn these for the life of it. When I messed around with its firmware and tricked into thinking it was a different DVD burner, it could burn some, but it was still very unreliable. But when I burn them in the DVD burner that comes with the MacBooks, I got over 90% performance. So, if you have an older DVD burner, maybe avoid these.

So in conclusion, performance is not perfect, but price more than makes up for it, 35$ for 50 discs shipped is incredible. Say its really $35 for 45 discs after the five fail, it's still a way better deal than $25 for 25 discs.

Customer Review: 8x does not mean your computer can burn 8x
Summary: 5 Stars

I have recently bought these Dual Layer DVD+R 8x Memorex from best buy and I highly recommend them. They are no different from verbatim which to buy I spent $20 on for a 5 pack. I bought them after having read these reviews just to prove they work fine. The main problem with the other review are the people are actually trying to burn data at 8x speeds which they are doing because it says 8x on the case, I do blame memorex and even verbatim for not warning users but not all computers can burn at 8x speeds. I found this out the hard way when I tried to burn Verbatim and Memorex at 8x, then I found a forum online that told me to slow them down to 4x or 2.4x and both Memorex and Verbatim disks worked perfectly.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND MEMOREX MAINLY FOR PRICE AND QUALITY.

If you have patience, burn the data at 2.4x it will take around 30 mins but I promise you it will work. Without any errors and I recommend that you go find a good burner off the web that will allow you to burn at 2.4x and that will verify the disk for you that makes sure there are no errors.

If you have any issues with finding a program or with disks either Memorex or Verbatim, please, drop me an email at Flare66@gmail.com .

Customer Review: fast when they burn
Summary: 1 Stars

These burn in about a third of the time that the 2.4x discs burn in.
But so far only about 1 out of 3 or 4 burn without aborting
in my new pioneer drive using DVDX platinum or Nero (a free version).
So although the price has come down finally on these 8x discs.
They seem to be useless. Since rereading and trying to burn again
is making them take much longer than the 2.4 speed discs plus it is actually costing me much more (due to tossing discs out one after another just threw 2 in arow out so now I'll use a 2.4x disc and it will burn just fine after wasting 2hrs trying to burn on an 8x disc. Maybe my drive just went bad after a month or two? Some seem to work just fine 8 gig in about 15 mins but only a few so far. Update 11/11/07 They won't let me change my rating (three stars now)Got new drives and staging to hard drive to let drives rest. Having MUCH better luck maybe the drives can't handle the speed really? So faster but wouldn't burn more than one or two in a row to the same drive unless you know your drive can handle the speed/heat. I remember reading somewhere that a recent Sony drive said something about letting it rest or cool down and I thought that was weird now it makes more sense.

Customer Review: Inexpensive, but slow and often fails
Summary: 4 Stars

UPDATE: Now I'm into my fourth spindle. I had about a 25% fail rate with the first spindle, and the second has been much worse--around 60% fail. The third was also fairly bad. Overall, I've had 71 failures out of 154 attempts--a 46% fail rate. I can only burn at 4x, even though the disks are supposedly rated for 8x.

Original Remarks:
Like others who have reviewed this product, I discovered that you can't usually burn disks at the 8X rate. When I tried 8X, I got 3 failed burns out of 4 attempts. When I limited the speed to 4X (the lowest available with my system), I only got 3 failed burns out of 15 attempts. Even with the high fail rate (I have a spindle of 100 single layer DVD-Rs and have had 2 fails out of 80 attempts), it's still a good price. It is annoying though to go through the whole process and have the disc fail at the end. Still, at the ~$36 price for 50 disks, it's about $1 per successful disk. I use DVDfab 5 and a LiteOn DVD writer (I bought the burner about 2 months ago).

I'm looking forward to the quality improving and price decreasing in the industry over time. Until then, I just bought a second spindle. Let's hope it's at least as good as this one has been so far.
