Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Memorex 8.5GB 8X Double Layer DVD+R (50pk Spindle)Customer Review: This is worthless Summary: 1 Stars
So i read all the reviews before buying this and against better judgement, i went ahead with the purchase thinking that i need to test this product out for myself before making any judgements.
Shipping was pretty fast, so i cant really blame the seller for anything besides carrying this god aweful product and the first thing i did was burn an image that was about 7GB in size. The burn failed halfway through the process and i thought to myself, "CRAP." I tried about five more discs with different images of different sizes and all I was able to burn were coasters. So i thought maybe i can use these to burn single layer discs, so i selected some images under 4GB and the same thing happened. I made about 10 coasters/frizbees before i gave up. I ended up ordering some Verbatim discs from newegg and all five DL discs that i burned turned out fine, so there is definetely nothing wrong with my setup. If you dont believe me, i can send you some samples as i have about 40 pieces left of this useless media that i can send to whoever wants to try.
The moral of this story is you should read the reviews. Although some people have reported no problems, there are a lot who have, so there is definetely a problem here and the only way this will get resolved is if no one buys this product. This will force the manufacturer to rethink the quality of their products.
Customer Review: iMac (1st gen 21.5") + Superdrive + Toast10 + these discs = COASTERS GALORE Summary: 1 Stars
I don't know, maybe I got a bad batch. Tried all the standard tricks (disc images, burn slow, etc. doesn't matter)(in fact, current hypothesis is drive heat is a factor, and burning one-at-a-time as fast as possible actually has worked twice, but is no panacea).
I see many reviews saying they use Mac/ superdrive/Toast like I, with great success - not my story. Half-way through the spindle and am considering just chucking the rest. Only 2 have actually finished the burn process - the rest had various physical errors, most in the lead-out stage (suggesting either manufacturing or design incompatibility) - yet even the successes have weird, though not fatal, navigation issues in playback (Phillips DVD player - never had problems before with decent+ copies).
Haven't tried data yet - not sure I want to trust these with my files! Have used TDK before - and they are often panned - but I've had ~95% success with them.
I swear I've no affiliations with any companies of any sort (see my other reviews, I'm hardly a fan of corporate capitalism). I'm just a bit paranoid about hard-drives and disc-scratches so want to back-up my expensive film collection and precious work files - and not drop a bundle on extra spindles in the process. WILL NEVER BOTHER WITH THESE AGAIN. WISH THERE WERE A ZERO STARS OPTION TO EXPRESS MY FRUSTRATION.
Customer Review: Dismal performance, don't buy Summary: 1 Stars
After having used up all my Memorex 2.4x DVD+R DL discs I came to Amazon to buy new discs. I should have heeded the warnings here but didn't. I have a small stack of coasters too. When I called Memorex customer support I ended up with a rep that didn't speak English well enough for me to understand all of what he said, but the guts of the call was now that I'd ruined 5 discs from the top of the stack he wanted me to burn 5 from the middle and 5 from the bottom. I only need to burn a total of 4 discs now so why should I have to waste 10? Next, he confirmed, as others have posted here, that they have 2 manufacturers for their discs but that they have no way to know which vendor made them - seems to me that they should track this so they can control quality, but hey, given they wanted me to waste 15 of the 50 discs just to see how they worked that tells me they're not really that concerned about quality control or customer service.
BTW, my personal system has a Lite-On LH-20A1P with the latest firmware and have tried these discs in 2 other systems with the same outcome.
I'm not sure what brand I'm going to buy next but I can assure Memorex it will NOT be their brand.
A closing note to Amazon, when you have more 1 star reviews than you do 5 star reviews you should reconsider your decision to carry a product.
Customer Review: Don't Ignore This Warning Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased the "Memorex" dual layer discs several times before, with a couple coming from Amazon like this last time. I had previously read the poor reviews but had not experience any problems myself, until now. The first four discs worked fine without a hitch but after that coding deficiencies occurred that made it impossible to play on a DVD player. I am not talking about some out dated DVD player but a Samsung 1080P7-Upconversion DVD player that was purchase new just last year. Thinking it might be my equipment or something that I was doing I experimented with different settings, programs and finally I had a friend try a disc with his equipment to see what would happen. He reported having the same problem. I tried a disc at the bottom of the pack to find out if perhaps not all were bad but the result was the same. I then purchase the "Verbatim" dual layer disc and recorded the same medium material on it with no problem. These results determined unequivocally that all the remaining Memorex discs were bad. So now I am left with forty-one bad Memorex dual layer discs out of the pack of fifty that I purchased. Obviously I should have not ignored the poor reviews related to this product and neither should you. The money I lost is small compared to the personal time lost and level of aggravation I experienced.
Customer Review: Try to avoid and here is why Summary: 2 Stars
As title suggests those disks are not good and should be avoided. Memorex used to be good and cheap dual layer solution, but not anymore. Older Memorex media were made by CMC Magnetics (Philips), while the batch I got is made by Ritek. After reading reviews posted here I would assume everyone else got Memorex made by Ritek or something just as bad.
Most burners have problems burning second layer of these disks. You would get a failure as soon as second layer is started. This could be fixed by upgrading drive firmware, if one is available. My BenQ1655 cannot burn second layer on those DVD. Samsung either fails randomly during burn or fails Nero verify after burn is complete.
If you burner is able to burn second layer, try burning on lowest speed possible (2.4x) as disk quality does not allow burns at 8x. 2.4x is slow, but at least you would avoid another coaster. In general, try to avoid these.
For dual layer media try either Verbatim or buy in respectable retail store. If first three burns come out coaster pack entire box and return it to the store. I wonder how long would it take BestBuy to remove this junk completely from their inventory.
Note: "DVD Identifier" can be used to verify who is the real manufacturer of media.
