Customer Review: very good--but with a drawback or two...

Memorex makes a very reliable blank CD-R that can handle up to 80 minutes of music or 700 megabytes of data. Moreover, these blank CD-Rs are capable of recording data at high speeds. The data I recorded onto these CD-Rs has now lasted for over three years, proving the test of time. I have used these as data discs and discs to record audio. I almost never got a coaster. Great!
The CD-R discs are compact and easy to store. While the discs are still blank, store them in the circular case on the spindle that they came in. After your burn data or music onto them, I would recommend storing them in slim jewel cases instead of paper sleeves. It's just better protection for your CD-Rs that have anything stored on them. Don't store these discs, burnt or blank, in rooms that become very hot; this causes damage to any brand of this type of disc and you could lose data over time.
There are two caveats that many other people note about any brand of this product: when you are burning the data onto the blank disc, don't be surprised if you see that the data is burning at a rate slower than the packaging advertises (52x). This can happen if your burner doesn't have the capacity to burn faster, or it may be a quirk. I am not a professional so I cannot be certain of precisely what causes this phenomenon; but I assure you that the extra minute or two (tops) that you wait to get your CD-R completed is worth the wait. In addition, DON'T write on these using Sharpie ink pens. The ink can seep through the top coating of the CD-R disc and slowly but surely compromise your data--and you wouldn't want that, now would you? If you need to label the discs, label its' jewel case using a post-it note. At least that's what I do.
Overall, Memorex blank CD-R discs store data reliably over the years and I believe that an extra minute to burn the data onto the blank disc is well worth it in the event that it doesn't actually burn at the very highest speed advertised.

I got into using computers back when the very concept of data on a CD was new to the public. So I've probably been through a lot of brands in my time. Rule of thumb is, of course, usually you get what you pay for. If you go with no-brand cheap CDs, you're going to get yourself a lot of coasters.
That being said, while these may or may not be more expensive than other brands, they have proven over many years of use to be as reliable as any of them.
I would greatly suspect that those posting reviews here of only a couple stars, are having hardware issues... which is what your CDR drive simply DOES after burning so many CDs... it begins to die, and you get an increasing number of coasters, no mater what brand you buy. Yes, I'm sure that every company experiences the occasional "bad batch" (I don't recall this ever happening to me but once, and I don't recall the brand it was... but sometimes it's a hardware malfunction. And sometimes I think my burner rejects a random disk once in a while just to make sure I didn't go anywhere, but that's just me. lol (Actually it's because my burner is dying.)
As for myself, I back up data on these things that I DEFINITELY do not want to be loosing. I probably have CDs from 2000 sitting around. And until my CD burner started dying recently, I haven't had any real problems with this brand. In fact, I would hate to have to buy any other brand. I've had nothing but problems with cheaper ones.
BOTTOM LINE: According to my experience, this seems to be a very quality product... as long as your CDR drive is working properly. But when it gets to the end of it's days (burnt one too many CDs) ... you're GOING to get coasters. No matter what brand you're going with. The CD writer I've had for only about 2 years now (it's a poor quality one), is dying. And that has nothing to do with Memorex. "You get what you pay for" also applies to hardware!

I have never had a huge problem burning music onto cd-r discs till I purchased these Memorex. I am an avid Amazon customer but I did not purchase these from them. I still felt I owed it to all buyers to warn them. Had I bought them from Amazon I would have been able to return them hassle free with the huge problems I encountered. Regretfully I purchased a 100 spindle of these Memorex cd-r discs somewhere else and 20 out of 25 have been unusable and turned into everready coasters. I have a great HP computer with a superb recording drive andd also use Roxio as my main recording source. Over the past 5 years I have used many different brands from name brands to store brands and honestly never had problems other than the rare and random fluke bad cd. But here whenever I go to record my own playlist the cds have a mind of their own and will burn some of the songs but not all. Like everyone else I thought it was me until I realized howe many hours and discs I had gone through. I tried burning through itunes as well as Roxio and I am not a novice. I do know what I am doing.
So, does anyone out there want 50 coasters? I won't even attempt using these ridiculously subpar cd-r discs. And as one other reviewer said items such as this really are basically a 1 or 5 star product. If you purchase a 100 spindle pack and have 2-3 discs that may not work that is a 5 star product but if you use over 50 of them and 40 do not work as is my new score at the time of finalizing this review that is in no way anything above a 1 star product. Please be kind to yourself, avoid the hassle and purchase another brand. Last note, I found a cd-r review site that categorized excellent quality, medium quality and bad quality cd-rs and Memorex was on the bad list. And remember, Amazon sells the product but is not responsible for its subpar performance.

Before I start, I would like to remind people that compatability problems still exist with CDRW burners. Some media brands will just work better on certain hardware/burners. On reviews like these, it's best to state your burner as well so readers will have an idea of what media matches best with what hardware/burner. I would also like to remind people that compatability problems exists between CDRs and late model CD players - wether on a boombox or on your car's player.Ok now onto my review... I have a LiteOn CDRW 40x burner (on my old PC), Teac DVD+/CDRW combo burner and an LG-Hitachi 48x CDRW burner. Memorex media works flawlessly on all these burners! Music CDs that I made plays perfectly on all my components - 5-disc Sony caroussel from the early 90s, my DVD player from 2000 and the rest of my CD players in the house and not to mention my car's CD player. No problems at all.
The only problem I encountered was when I made VCDs using these disc. They "sometimes" wouldn't work on my Panasonic DVD/VCD player (year 2000). They would give me playback problems such as pixelation and audio skipping! But when using another brand, such as TDK or Fuji, I don't get these playback problems. The Memorex VCD would work on my dirt-cheat Apex though. Further, establishing the idea that media do have compatability problems.
Considering my hardware, the brands that gave me no problems at all were: TDK, Fuji and Maxell - they just work flawlessly on whatever I throw at them. I would put the Memorex up there with the other brands but they seem to be only good when it comes to music and data but now much on video projects. But since most people use their CDRs for music and data anyway, these CDRs are still a great buy in my opinion! I currently have TDKs and Memorexs.

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's. Sometimes as a person that has worked in electronic stores my thoughts are requested on recording equipment and electronics.

Memorex has been ultra reliable for me as a recording medium for blank CDR's. I have used a substantial amount over the years for both data and pictures (Notes on my Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and photos) and for various rock and roll albums.
The CD's have held up well and there have been very little that were defective right out of the package. While the quality control is a shade below the Fuji from Japan, in no way should Memorex be considered a poor second choice.
For maximum shelf life the recorded CD's should be in jewel cases and not in paper sleeves. If you are into making your own labels make sure to use the better quality paper. The inferior thin labels not only will curl up before they are placed on the CD but the glue will actually get into the CD itself. Many defective CD's are not the fault of the manufacturer but the consumer not using best judgment.
