Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Manfrotto 776YB Monopod - Replaces 676BCustomer Review: Fast, Light, Functional Summary: 4 Stars
This is the first monopod that I ever owned. I chose this one because it collapses to a short enough length (with 234RC head attached) that it fits easily into an airline carry-on bag, or it will fit into the main compartment of a Kelty Redwing day pack. It is also light in weight (important when hauling it over mountain passes). This convenience comes at a cost: it is a little too flexible when extended (but not too bad), and it is a little too short for people taller than 6 feet or so (unless you spread your legs a bit like a tripod). The lowest section seems to be the major contributor to the extra flexibility.
I found it easy to use. When the clamps are released sequentially, the various sections drop rapidly down under gravity and can be rapidly secured. The monopod deploys in seconds. I found it convenient to leave he monopod attached to the camera with the monopod sections completely collapsed. I was walking in crowds with the DSLR held at the base of the lens in the right hand at shoulder level, and with the monopod resting diagonally across my torso and held at the bottom with my left hand near my hip. I did not find myself tripping or poking anyone.
Other reviewers commented that the strap slips. Mine unbuckled itself and fell off in Kunming. The problem can be solved by buckling the strap normally, and then threading the loose end back through the buckle. The loop that this creates prevents the strap from slipping out of the buckle.
I am very satisfied with this product for my specific needs. If you have a really heavy lens, you will need something more robust. If you are tall, you may find this monopod to be a bit short. All monopods represent compromises, but this one has a good blend light weight, short length, easy use, and affordable price.
