Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Manfrotto 486RC2 Compact Ball Head with RC2 Rapid Connect SystemCustomer Review: Nice head, for a monopod Summary: 4 Stars
I've had this for about 18 months now. It's a great head for a monopod because it has no ability to pan, like the 488. If you are using it on a tripod I strongly suggest you spend a few extra dollars and get the 488.
One other note, when you attached the camera make sure the safety switch is ingaged. It does not automatically switch into the engage position all the time. I recently had my 7D and 580EX on it and it the whole rig fell off because that switch had not engaged. Nothing happened, as it was very close to the ground, but it could have been very bad.
Customer Review: Great for outdoors Summary: 5 Stars
The primary advantage of this head is its light weight which makes it a great fit with the light carbon fiber tripods. Despite the light weight it is strongly built and has all the basic functions. The single lever means you have to keep one hand on your camera or it will flop in ways you will not like. The trick is to loosen the ball just enough to rotate the camera (while holidng it with your other hand) to the position you want and then tighten. A level here would have been nice. All in all this is a great, sturdy ball head that won't weigh you down on the trail.
Customer Review: Good, sturdy, basic ball head. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this as the mounting ball for my Manfrotto 190XDB3 tripod. It is very solid/sturdy. The rapid release feature is great/convenient. The head is able to rotate 360 degrees and will also tilt over 90 degrees for vertical shots. I guess my only complaints could be (1) there is no built in level if you are set up on an uneven surface, and (2) it would have been nice if there was some way to know when you have the top of the head back in the straight upright center position again, like a groove or click that lets you know so you don't have to guess.
Customer Review: Manfrotto 496RC Summary: 3 Stars
I originally ordered a Manfrotto 486 RC2 ball head. The manufacture has discontinued that model and the vendor A.P.D. automatically sent me the placement model: 496RC2. It works fine if you take pictures at the normal landscape camera position. When you turn 90 degree for portrait shots, the ball head always creeps a little, unless you tighten the screw to the extreme. The panning action is awkward with a ball head. However, it's simple, compact and light-weight. It fits my Manfrotto tripod perfectly.
Customer Review: Well made but has Downside Summary: 3 Stars
This product is sturdy and well made. However, as both the vertical and horizontal setting are controlled by one lever, it is difficult to really make sure your shots are level horizontally - independent of the tripod which oftentimes has a bubble setting to assure horizontal alignment.
Also, I have a EOS 1D Mark III plus a zoom lens, if you want to take vertical shots (as in turning the camera to its side), it seems that no matter how hard you secure the lever, the camera will droop down.
