Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Magellan Traffic Link for Subscription-Free Traffic for RoadMate 1210, 1220, 1340, 1424, 1440, 1470, 4700Customer Review: Okay, Worth What I Paid, But Not What I Expected... Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the traffic link with a Magellan Maestro 4700 4.7-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished). The first one to arrive was defective. The tip of the charger end was broken off. There was absolutely no damage to the box. I sent that back and quickly received a replacement.
The second unit arrived in tact. It replaces the cigarette lighter power cord and is easy to install. An FM antenna built into the power cord receives the traffic info and downloads it to the GPS via the mini USB port.
PROS:
- Traffic link replaces the power cable, so there is no extra cables and antennas.
- When the traffic information is correct and up-to-date, it is quite handy. Unfortunately, it is not always up-to-date.
- When there is an accident or slow-down (and the information is appropriately updated), the traffic icon turns RED. I hit the icon and it gives me an option to route around traffic incidents. I have not yet had the opportunity to try an alternate route.
- There is an FM reception indicator, but it is not displayed in map mode. It can only be seen under settings.
- FM reception seems to be good on the freeway (but disappears on many of the surface streets).
- There is no subscription fee. The traffic service is supported through a small advertisement on the screen, which does not interfere with the GPS operation. When you arrive at your destination and park, a full screen advertisement appears with a chance to chance to get coupons. However, it disappears as soon as I lose the FM reception, which happens in parking garages and carports. So, I have not been able to see what the coupons are.
CONS:
- Since the antenna is built into the cigarette lighter power cable, I cannot power up the unit in my home to pre-load traffic information before I hit the road.
- The direction sheet that ships with the unit is completely inadequate. I had to basically figure how to set it up on my own. This is somewhat related to having the 4700 GPS which also has predictive traffic. The predictive traffic seemed to take precedence over live traffic.
- It takes about 15 to 20 minutes after turning it on to get any traffic information. By the time it updates, I am already sitting on the freeway.
- The traffic information is difficult to see on the screen. The green line that indicates my routing information completely covers up the yellow and red used to highlight streets with slowdowns. Also, there is no indicator for "good" traffic conditions. I would have liked to see the road light up green, like on Google maps.
- I had to disable predictive traffic on my 4700 to have live traffic work. This is a major pain when I am in areas where there is no FM reception for live traffic, which there are many.
- It loses FM reception for receiving traffic information quite frequently. When this happens, all the live data that was there disappears. When reception returns, it takes several minutes before live traffic information returns.
- The traffic information is not always up to date. The other day, the GPS gave me a "green" light for traffic incidents while I was stopped on the freeway. It turns out there was an accident, and it was already in clean-up mode.
- Having to hit the screen icon to find an alternate route is difficult to do while driving on a California freeway.
Overall, it does a mediocre job of providing traffic info. Since the price on Amazon is extremely reasonable, I will keep this. However, if you have a smart phone with internet service, keep Google Maps handy for traffic info.
