Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Magellan Maestro 4210 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Customer Review: Good value
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a good little unit. Priced well, boots quickly and has basic GPS functions that work well.
It does ship however with early 2007 maps.... If you call tech support within 30 days, they will upgrade to the latest maps for $10 shipping/handling fee (CD). Current maps available as of this review are spring 2009. You will also need to upgrade the firmware before loading the latest maps. Firmware updates are available for free download on the Magellan web site. My first trip from Las Vegas to SLC with the unit was trouble free. We visited 2 businesses in the the city industrial district driving directly to the businesses with no previous knowledge of the city. Street routing seemed efficient and the voice prompts were timely with plenty of notice to prepare for exit from the freeway etc.... The unit also chimes close to the exact location of the next turn which proved handy in the city center with streets spaced closely together. A couple of occasional blips on routing however. Neither of these are brand specific, I have noticed these traits in all GPS units. Sometimes while planning a trip using the "fastest time" option, the unit sometimes plans a route completely round a city's freeway loop system.... On the Magellan this is quickly remedied by planning the route again using another option such as "shortest distance" "most" or "least" use of freeways.... that seems to shake the cobwebs out.... Another time the unit tried to make me turn right on a street that didn't continue through at that location.... And take me across a railroad track in the process. Since I was traveling in the daytime I was able to see the problem... At night or low visibility it could've presented an issue...
Please note, some are apparently confused on this issue: As correctly identified in the product description and packaging, this is NOT a text to speech unit. It will NOT announce street names. For that you need to pay a little more and get a different model....

Pros:
Low price
Good battery life
Solid feeling power switch (a problem with TomToms)
Automatic start up when plugged in to power
Automatic shut down prompt when disconnecting from power
Re-route function
Quick satellite acquisition and map drawing
Freeway exit POI display (quick access to upcoming exit POI details without canceling existing route)
Free extended warranty if AAA member

Cons:
Display not customizable for color and data placement (you either like the layout or you don't)
No current vehicle speed or road speed limit info available (This is a major oversight on Magellan's part)
Map set as delivered is 2007
Low volume... Not an issue if you have a late model car traveling with the windows up and the radio turned down.. But using the unit in my classic truck at freeway speeds poses a problem...
No pedestrian mode (TomTom) This would be handy when walking around downtown looking for a particular shop in a city center...
Multiple screen touches required to toggle through "time of arrival", "distance to arrival", and "time to destination"
Map updates not available for download on-line... Must wait for shipment via FedEx
Freeway exit POIs are often "not available". Then, when you speed by the exit you see lot's of gas stations and fast food locations near the freeway.... I'm hoping for better results when I install the newest maps... I'll update this post (if possible) when I do...

Description of Magellan Maestro 4210 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

The Magellan Maestro 4210 delivers the best navigation experience possible by featuring a new, intuitive user interface that guides drivers to their destination via voice and on-screen prompts. It also includes a new, ultra-thin design, an advanced, easy-to-use feature set, and more.
We've been big fans of Magellan's Maestro line since it came out in early 2006. The Maestro interface is incredibly easy to use, even for those who are not completely comfortable with electronics. At the same time, Magellan was ahead of the industry with useful innovations like multi-destination routing and pre-loaded reviews for points of interest like hotels and restaurants (from AAA). With it's 3200 and 4200 series, Magellan has improved the Maestro line giving them a SirfStar III chipset that provides super-fast. satellite lock and making them thinner. In fact, at .7 inches, these are -- at the time of this writing (November 2007), the thinnest portable GPS navigators available. Distingushing between models is also fairly easy.

3200 and 4200 Family of Navigators
Distingushing between models is also fairly easy. The 3200-series navigators feature a 3.5-inch screen, while the 4200s have a 4.3-inch widescreen display. The 3200 and 4200 offer great, basic navigation with turn-by-turn spoken directions, pre-loade maps of the 48 contiguous United States, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, and 1.3 million POIs. The 3210 and 4210 add maps for Canada and Alaska, AAA travel information (see details below) and bump you up to 6 million POIs. The 3220 and 4220 add maps of Mexico. The top-of-the-line 3250 and 4250 add a host of other features, including text-to-speech directions that give real street names, bluetooth for hands-free phone calls, integrated traffic (with a free 3-month subscription), and voice command.

You can even touch an onscreen icon for a nearby destination, see name and address, and get an instant route. Turn by turn visual and spoken directions guide you every step of the way.

Auto re-route gets you quickly back on track whenever you make a detour or miss a turn. QuickSpell feature intelligently searches and checks spelling when you enter addresses. The 4210 offer multiple view options, including 2D, 3D, and TrueView that shows your upcoming turn using a 3D split screen. Maneuver List displays the full turn-by-turn details of your route. Auto night view adjusts color and contrast for easy night viewing.

AAA-enabled

It also has an Address Book in which you can create and store POIs and addresses that you use frequently.
