Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Magellan Maestro 3140 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS NavigatorCustomer Review: Device works okay, but won't stay on windshield for anything Summary: 3 Stars
I have a car with a built in GPS and wanted a portable to use in my other cars and rentals when I travel. I like it okay - wish I had gotten one with a bigger screen, but it is certainly functional for basic needs - and of course, not nearly as nice or as many functions as the one built into my Honda. At least it knows more roads than my built in device does! However, what is really, really frustrating is that the mount (and I like the design of it) will not stay stuck onto the windshield. You can work really hard - clean and use the alcohol and follow instructions - and finally get it to stick on - but then after a few days - well, it just falls off while you are driving and falls onto the floorboard - making it rather difficult to use. And of course, then it takes another 50 attempts to get the darn thing back on the windshield. Wish it came with a better "sticking" device. :(
Customer Review: Best at price point. Summary: 5 Stars
I recently got the 3140 and have used it quite a bit. Overall, the device has really no significant downsides. The most important feature is the text to speech voice guidance. While the screen is small, the voice guidance keeps your eyes on the road and not on the gps unit. The routing engine is robust and has not given me any problems. Satellite lock is very fast and reliable. Obtaining position from a cold start reliably occurs in less than one minute. Route recalculation is very fast for local trips. This makes the device in many ways better than car-based navigation systems at a mere fraction of the price. I have not had problems with the device recommending U-turns when deviating from the recommended route.
Given the excellent performance, it is a close contender with Garmin. With the heavy discount on the price it should be a first choice.
Customer Review: Overpriced piece of junk Summary: 1 Stars
I don't know how much you have to spend to get a decent GPS. Some inexpensive GPS devices get 5 star reviews while more expensive units get low reviews. In this case, this unit performs horribly for its intended task, since it freezes every time it tries to calculate a route in New York City. For a device that can't do it's basic function I give this a 1 star.
More annoyingly though is the cheapness of MAgellan not to even include an AC adapter to charge the GPS at home, given that the first screen you get at bootup says how dangerous it is to program the GPS in your car while driving!!!!
Customer service is awful, as anyone on this site can attest to.
If anyone has a better suggestion for a GPS please respond. If this is supposed to be one of the better units out there, what can I expect for less money?
Customer Review: ok, but not great. Summary: 3 Stars
If you want a GPS that gets you from point A to point B then this does that. But if you want a GPS that gets you from point A to point B without any issues then I would look elsewhere. It sometimes has issues where it seems to not know where it is. A few times when leaving our house it was convinced we were in a completely different state and it didn't update to our actual location until half an hour later. And it doesn't always give the best directions. A few times we have asked it directions to a place we know very well and asked for quickest route and it gave us the longest and most complex route possible. I just really expected more from it. Most times it will get you to your destination, but I find myself printing online directions as a backup, just in case. I wish we had purchased a different GPS.
Customer Review: Great product for the price Summary: 4 Stars
As my first GPS purchase, this device has everything that I was looking for. It functions well and is easy to use. The screen size is sufficient and the display layout works well. The text-to-speech capability is quite helpful and the voice is clear and easy to understand. As with any GPS device, the routes the device calculates sometimes aren't the most direct, but the routes it has provided me have always get me to my destination accurately. On the downside, one needs to keep in mind that the maps in this device are from late 2006 and are scheduled to be updated later this year (addt'l cost ~$70). The AAA tourbook is also a bit outdated, but can be updated for free if one is a AAA member. Overall, the features and performance of this device can't be beat for the price I paid ($149).
