Customer Review: Great system, great functionality, never get lost again.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great product. We bought this as a gift for a friend and both him and his wife are very happy with it. I personally have a garmin and used to have a tomtom. I didn't like the tomtom but I really like the garmin so I wanted that for my friend but when I saw the bargain that megellan was offering and I saw that it has all the functionality of the Garmin, I got this one for my friends. They said it is great and works just as good as our garmin.

This product unlike the tomtom can take you where you need to go even if you don't know the address, you can just enter the intersection and it will take you there. If you don't know the location but you just want to find a particular business, you just enter the name and it will accurately find the closes one to you, with phone number too. You can go anywhere, and you won't get lost. The best part is that it's touch screen, which is so much more convenient and faster when you're searching for something. The navigation system in my car is not touch screen and it's such a hassle to find anything.

I definitely recommend this product for road warriors, or just for people that don't like getting lost.

Customer Review: Good Value but limited POIs
Summary: 3 Stars

At less than $200 I find this a very good value if you intend to use it to navigate to known addresses, but inadequate if you intend to use it to find local Points of Interest. The unit performed perfectly out of the box, and has a large, easy to see screen. Navigation to pre-programmed street addresses entered by me was flawless. Many reviews comment on the limited POI file, and they are indeed very skimpy. Although the unit correctly found the closest ATM and gas station, it has no knowledge of about 1/3 of the restaurants, coffee shops and retail businesses in my town. There seems to be no rationale to which POIs it knows. It missed top-quality, well established restaurants that have been in the same location for years, but knew a KFC only a year old. The unit ships with a data cable, but Magellan has no improved POI software available. You can manually enter custom locations, but it is a slow process and you need to know the street address. I recommend this unit for local use where you just need navigation to a street address that you already know. I do not recommend this unit for business travelers or vacationers trying to find POIs in unfamiliar cities.

Customer Review: A very affordable solid product with a few minuses.
Summary: 3 Stars

On the plus side:

1. Price is hard to beat.
2. Nice display. Nice touch screen. Nice sound and speech.
3. Intuitive enough that my 67 year old mother could figure it out.
4. Long distance routes are close to optimum.

On the negative side:

1. No text to speech.
2. A little sluggish when recalculating routes.
3. No printed manual. (Manual comes on a CD.)
4. Hard to remove from window mount.
5. No instructions how to use the UBS cable, or if the device is updatable or not. Apparently no PC software comes with the unit. If maps change, I have no idea if I can update the unit.

6. No phone or email support.

7. Short distance directions sometimes send me down less than optimal routes. (My biggest gripe.) It doesn't always know which street is the main thoroughfare and picks a worse street to go down. On one occasion, to go straight east 3 blocks, it told me first to make a right turn and go south 2 blocks.

At least it gets me there. Bottom line is that you have to use common sense and not always follow the directions blindly.

Customer Review: Good product.... great service
Summary: 4 Stars

I received this GPS unit for Christmas and am very happy with it. I doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles of more expensive versions, but the screen is very clear and it does what I want it to do.

I have two minor issues that keep me from giving it five stars.
- Something is draining the battery even when the device is off, so if I leave it in the glove box for a day or two after driving with it plugged in, I have to plug it back in.

- The voice spells out the letters and numbers as you type in an address. Unless you have it on mute, this gets old fast. I don't type unless the car is parked, so I don't need the audio feedback.

On the other hand, I just had a GREAT experience with their customer support. I had to call because the system was acting strange right before a cross-country drive when I really wanted the unit to be working. I was talking to a live person within two minutes and he fixed the problem within another two minutes.

Based on that, I give the company five stars and encourage you to buy the unit with the features and price range you are looking for.

Customer Review: Expensive paper weight
Summary: 1 Stars

Read my lips: DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT!

I have only used the Maestro 3100 maybe 5 times. It is now broken.

Here's the deal: It has a built-in rechargeable battery, so you can use it portably. But guess what! Once that battery fails to hold any charge whatsoever, the whole unit won't work! It will not turn on for more than 5 seconds, then goes into standby.

You know when I decided to buy this GPS, I wasn't going to go hiking, I just want it to sit on my dashboard of my car and use it while being plugged in. I could give a rats a_ss about using it outdoors.

My unit hasn't been working for well over 5 months, the unit is 13 months old. Unfortunately my unit is out of warranty by 1 month and their tech support would only sell me another new or used unit at a discount.

PLEASE TAKE IT FROM MY BAD EXPERIENCE: DONT BUY ANY MAGELLAN PRODUCT EVER!!!!!

I heard Garmins are the way to go.

If this review prevents one customer from throwing their money away on buying a Magellan product, then the 5 minutes I spent writing this review was well worth it.
