Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Magellan Maestro 3100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Customer Review: Maestro Magellan Stinks
Summary: 1 Stars

Short and Sweet, Simply put, the Maestro Magellan stinks for three major reasons, I'll include in this review.

(1) You cannot depend on it's accuracy. If it tells you your destination is on the left side of the street it may very well be on the right, a block or two down.

(2)It does not distinguish between valid and invalid addresses. For example, say you make a slight slip and enter 112 Columbus Way, instead of 211 Columbus Way. Magellan will take you to 112 even if it doesn't exist.

(3) The Fastest Time feature is not reliable. Magellan Maestro might as well not even have it. What's the point if the equation doesn't factor traffic flow or lights, and stop signs. If it actually / technically does, I'm sorry but the equation still doesn't work. I deliver around town, Glendale, Denver CO, and it seems quite conclusive that the only things Magellan factors into its equation is distance and speed limit, which is totally bogus.

Basically, if you're looking for a little toy to sit on your dashboard and act as a sort of automatic map, Magellan Maestro's the one--and comes at a real bargain. But, if you're looking for something more than a map, something useful / something reliable, you best look somewhere else.

Customer Review: Read Before You Buy!
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased the Magellan Maestro 3100 GPS because of the price and ease of use while in route. I am very pleased with the performance of this unit at this time. However, when I first got it, it would lockup after about 15 to 20 miles of travel. I looked on the Magellan site and found that there was an update to the software. Be warned that this is a very large file and can take up to 25 hrs to down load on dial up at 56kb. You will need DSL or Faster connection to get this file. It installes very easily and since I have had no problems with the unit locking up. It is much smoother in screen updates as well as adding Alaska and Hawaii to the map.

When you are on a trip and you want to change the route it can be easily done by canceling and re-entering your route from where you are located, if you get a route you do not want all you have to do is tell it to delete the road or highway you do not want to use and it recalculates the route without that section.

All in all this is a nice unit I gave it a 4 because of the locking up issue and the download being so large and taking so long. Magellan says they will be making this available on CD. But that is who knows when in the future. They should have made it available from the release date.

Customer Review: Great GPS for the $$
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this for my stepdad who is in his 70s. He is not what you would call a gadget guy. It is perfect for him because it is very simple to use. What some might call a lack of features is a actually a plus for him. I helped him get started with it and he quickly mastered switching between the screens, entering addresses to navigate to, using the points of interest feature (very handy when traveling in unfamiliar areas to find gas, lunch, hotels, etc), and the current location feature (which gives your exact location in latitude and longitude, as well as relative location to cross streets and intersections. This really gives him peace of mind in case he needed to dial for help while traveling. My $200 Garmin does not even have this feature! I love it!). He is currently using it on a trip from Mississippi to Niagra Falls!

Not the most feature-packed GPS on the market, but for basic navigation and finding local points of interest (not to mention the current location feature), it is a great value for the price - less than $70 when I ordered. One ding on its review was the map update - you have to pay to update the maps on it. No big deal if you're keeping to Interstates, but for areas with recent road construction you want the newest maps.

Customer Review: Great value for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I have used it only for a week , Once for a long trip spanning 3 states, otherwise local routes.

Pros
---- Nice interface, very easy to use, works right out of the box, minimal setup. very friendly & intuitive user interface.
---- Price, as low as $200 if you look around, a great bargain
---- Decent maps/updated NAVTEQ mapping data (I think as of April 2007)
---- fast re-routing/detour calculations
---- Fast satellite acquisition even indoors
---- Nice features like Current location finder
---- Decent size for portability
---- So far no crashes or freezes

Cons
---- No AC adapter included in the box, need to charge in car
---- No provision for Map updates in future
---- No text to speech/Bluetooth
(No other GPS at this price range has these features anyway)
---- Uses Windows CE, no wonder it is sluggish (but once route is prepared it is quick to reroute or detour calculations)
---- Terrible battery life

Overall, For price around $200, it is a great bargain. I initially bought Mio C220 but returned it next day. I think in budget GPS category, there are very few if any who can give you so many features & performance as 3100 gives.

Customer Review: Worst Customer Support EVER!
Summary: 1 Stars

I recieved a Maestro 3100 for Christmas 2007 - after Christmas - went onto the manfacuters site to register it and the site told me that there was an update for it (HUGE file 800Meg) I down loaded it. Tried to put the update on the unit - but that failed miserably - and now the unit wouldn't boot.

That was about Jan 10th or so. I have been fighting with Magellan every since - they admit their udpate was defective. They wouldn't pay for me to ship it back for repair. On Feb 4th, I sent it to them at my expense. They have since lost it, and refuse to send me a new one - even though - this whole thing is their fault.

You are unable to contact anyone in the US to even talk about the problem. You only get customer support in Phillipines or India. You always get a name and ID number - which when you try to get someone to verfy a name or ID - those people don't actually exist. I have spent countless hours - trying to get satisfaction and to date (Feb 26 2008) I still don't have a GPS.

It is a huge joke - NEVER NEVER buy a Magellan. If you do - don't think you have any options when it stops working.

Just the worst possible customer service I have ever dealt with.

DON'T BUY MAGELLAN.
