Customer Review: useless, defeated silently in 5 seconds
Summary: 1 Stars

It arrived today and is going back to Amazon for a refund tomorrow. It looks secure when you put it in place, and feels secure when you test it by pulling inward on the door handle, but test it by going outside pushing on the door and you will be shocked at how easy it is to defeat. The rubber ears on the doorknob end are too flexible and bend out of the way (to the side and down) when you push on the door allowing the door to be very easily opened. The entire top rubber assembly also flexed slightly to the side on the metal pole as it was defeated. It's secured to the end of the metal pole about as well one of those rubber erasers that slip on to the end of your pencil. What's worse is that because the thickest parts of the pole, the top ears and the bottom foot, are made of soft rubber they were silent and made no racket as I pushed on the door. Furthermore since no metal parts hit the floor when it fell to the ground it landed very quietly. The rubber ears are what impacted the floor as it fell to the floor after being defeated, the rubber foot was already on the ground as it fell. I got in the door silently in less than 5 seconds. The tap from a lock bump would be the loudest thing you would hear. Get a puppy from the pound and a 12 gauge instead and sleep well, it's well worth the $400 total initial investment + dog food. I do weigh 240#, but I didn't have to push hard at all to get in. A false sense of security thinking that you would hear some serious racket as this thing got defeated is worse than not having it at all. What I was using before I tried this, and what I will go back to using, was a chair with the legs sitting inside some rubber soled tennis shoes to keep the chair legs from slipping on the floor. Yes I could break the chair with a lot more effort than it took to defeat the MACE Big Jammer, but at least it would make some serious racket as it splintered, and with the door/chair contact being hard material it would also make some noise as I moved the door back and forth trying to get in.

Customer Review: Great security; poor instructions
Summary: 5 Stars

The item itself is outstanding. Very heavy construction, many adjustments possible, very reasonable price. The top and bottom are made of a soft rubber, which means that the top will fit a variety of door handles and the bottom provides for a great deal of friction. My complaints are only with the instructions, which leave out two important pieces on information. 1) The holes that allow for adjustments are not aligned just vertically, but also in rows. This means that for a given door, you may not only have to push and pull, but also twist to get the right length. Doing so puts the rubber top and bottom foot out of alignment. It took me maybe 30 seconds to realize that I could also twist them and get it to work. Maybe that is obvious, but at a time when even sleeping pills come with the warning "May cause drowsiness," the instructions should point that out. 2) The instructions do not mention a pin with a ring through it that comes with the package. I assume you put it through opposing holes once you have the right length, but is this necessary? Is it for added strength or basic security? If you lose it, can you still use the bar? I would like to know. Still, I checked all the security bars on Amazon, and I think that considering quality and price, this one is the best.

Customer Review: Big Jammer Door Brace...
Summary: 5 Stars

saves the day. It makes my family sleep easier and more secure at night. We're in a two unit apartment building and there is an entry door and hall before our units. The last person in at night places the brace under the knob, so we all know we've eliminated the threat of someone coming in though the front door.

If someone were to try to force the door, (I don't think theres a chance of them getting through the jammer) the worst thing that would happen is that the knob would tighten, making it difficult to turn. We solved this problem after a trial run and found that if you unscrew the knob and reassemble it in the door, it works fine. We think it's due to the stress of the knob against the door. I still can't see any part of the door failing either.

Good Luck!!

Customer Review: better than nothing (I suppose ;-)
Summary: 2 Stars

The item seems to be rather poorly designed. The upper end cap isn't nearly wide enough to properly accept my door knobs. This allows a couple inches of play (before door meets any serious resistance). Another thing I don't like is the angle of the brace. I would much prefer a wider angle between the door and the base/foot of the brace. I realize that the bar is adjustable in length. However, if the bar is lengthened (the angle increased), the foot will not sit flat on the floor (it'll be cocked up with only the heel touching).

It's clearly better than nothing. And, I've modified it (cut and filed), so that it works better than it did. But, I still don't have much confidence in it.

I'd gladly return it for a refund, except that I've modified it.

Customer Review: Awesome choice
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought one of these about 20 years ago at the recommendation of a friend. I was living alone in an apartment and neighbors were having some "issues" with unauthorized access by maintenance guys. I caught someone trying to open my door shortly after that. I heard a little bit of noise and jumped up to see the door just barely open and then shut. Whoever it was was trying to be quiet entering, didn't succeed and left. I have carried this with me when I have stayed in hotels. Now I'm ordering more because I am living in a house. Eventually, you will loosen the door knob but periodically just tighten it back up again. And get some big guy to stand on the other side of the door and try to get in. They won't. Promise. Sleep well, my friend.
