THe Macally enclosure is another of Macally's well made accessories. It is a bit larger than some notebook (2.5") SATA drive enclosures, especially USB only, but includes Firewire as well as USB 2.0. Firewire is substantially faster for transfers of large amounts of data, in spite of the supposed higher speed of USB 2.0.
It also does a good job of keeping the drive cool, which is especially important if you are using a 7200 RPM drive.
The bridge hardware does not take a lot of power, and this should run on most computers with Firewire bus power, even with a large, fast drive installed.
You can expect this item to give good service for a long time.

I took advantage of the current sale price and now have two of these Macally Enclosures. Drive installation was fast and easy and they mount up every time I plug them into my Macbook without any additional power required. I also daisy chain the two drives with no problems. The heat seems to disperse well and the on off switch is a nice touch. I took the plastic front panel off of one and resprayed it white to visibly differentiate the two drives. I have a 320gb drive in one enclosure and a 120gb drive in the other which I use as an OSX back up drive. The only con I have found so far is the brightness of the LED at the front of the enclosure however this isn't a deal breaker.Customer Review: Everything you need and simple to use

My fiance picked this out for me because he has three of them already and knew it to be a good product. I tried it and it is pretty much everything you need. It was simple enough for me to figure out how to use it. You just have to be careful that the switch is off when you plug and unplug it to avoid messing up the data.
The light is very bright, almost blindingly so. But I like that part of it. Others might not think it so good. If it's going to become a permanent feature in your bedroom, be prepared to ritually cover it up every night, or face it towards a wall. The light is bright blue when it's on, and flashes bright red when it's transferring data.

For the money, I think the Macally drive is a nice middle ground between some of the more expensive enclosures that may have FW800 and the dirt cheap enclosures that may only be USB 2.0.
The hardware appears to be fairly high quality and everything came apart and went back together smoothly.
I am using it with a WD Caviar Blue 640 GB drive with a Macbook Pro via FireWire to make bootable clones via SuperDuper. Transfer rates are good and it spins up right away to get down to business. The case gets a bit warm after its been running for a bit, but not nearly warm enough where I would be concerned about it.

Low power consumption, dual firewire ports, port for added power input if needed, USB port, heavy duty construction . . . I've been looking for years for a case like this one. (Now I just have to find it for IDE drives!)
I travel a lot, and this is the way I keep my data with me and backed up. I bought four of them. Combined with the high capacity SATA drives available today, it makes me portable. Plus the dual firewire ports mean I can daisy chain them when needed.
Definitely a great choice. Best built and designed case I have found to date.
