Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Macally PHRS-250CC FireWire 400/USB2.0 External Storage Enclosure for 2.5" SATA HDDCustomer Review: Firewire is so many times better than USB Summary: 5 Stars
This enclosure is worth it if you are shopping for Firewire. If you don't know what Firewire is or understand how much of a superior bus it is, you still have USB. But for Firewire use (which I use exclusively) it's a very fast drive with an enclosure that will stand up to it all! I put the 120gb drive that I was perviously running in my MacBook in the enclosure, and purchased a 320gb 7200rpm to replace it. It's a great way to do that upgrade because you can still put your old drive to use. The quality of everything is super sturdy, especially once you see the internal configuration. The other USB enclosures I have are just a flimsy board just wedged in the end of the case, where this is mounted to the sliding tray. I could go on and on about how good this enclosure is, but thats it for now. Get one and see for yourself! :D
Customer Review: Solid Enclosure + Manual Power Switch Summary: 5 Stars
This external enclosure is even nicer than the LaCie rugged drives. The case is comprised of a solid aluminum extrusion with plastic end caps. The enclosure efficiently disperses heat from the HD and feels firm and cool to the touch.
There are two firewire ports and one USB port.
The switch has been surprisingly handy for leaving the HD plugged into my MacBook. Just turn off the drive with the manual switch and wait to turn it back on when you're ready to use the drive again. Even more remarkable is that when you replace your internal MacBook HD with a new internal HD, you can boot from your original HD while it is in the this external enclosure and connected to your MacBook with the firewire chord. I own Apricorn, LaCie and other external drives/enclosure, but I like this one the best.
Customer Review: Correct for SATA drives Summary: 5 Stars
I was not so familiar with the intimate technological history of little disc drives that I knew the difference between an IDE drive (older obsolete type) and a SATA drive (new cool type). As a result at first I ordered the wrong one (IDE) for my MacBook drive replacement, had to send it back, and get this one which is corrrect for SATA. The difference is one letter in the Macally model number; PHR-250CC versus PHRS-250CC. I am still irritated that the Amazon product description did not explain this difference for non-experts. Grrr.
Once I obtained the correct drive, it went together easily and came with all cables to use the drive as FireWire or USB 2. It's just a piece of extruded aluminum and a connector and some cables. Must cost about $2 to manufacture. It works fine. Get the right one.
Customer Review: Great Little Enclosure and FIrewire too! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great little enclosure. It's easy to install a 2.5" sata drive (make sure you do in fact have a sata drive, and not an ata drive. The case is solid, and seems to dissipate heat very well. I have two of these and they stack together very well. There are two rubber strips along the top and bottom that allows for stacking.
The runs off power from your computer using either usb 2.0 and the even better Firewire.
The only slight flaw is that the little blue light on the front of the enclosure is really quite bright and may be a distraction. This can easily be solved with a small piece of tape, or by the way you place the drive.
All and all a very good choice for extra hard drive you have on hand, or if your replacing a hard drive you could just move all your stuff very easily.
Customer Review: Simple Bootable Enclosure-Mac Friendly Review Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this to install a new drive in my MacBook and then use the old drive as a bootable external HD.
I am a geek but not an electronics or computer expert but i can:
Operate a screwdriver.
Plug in a cable.
Follow simple instructions(especially with included pictures).
And i had my new drive installed and now can use the old drive as a backup. If you are new to this, Firewire powers this device so you dont need a power cable. When i was creating a clone of my old drive it took 1.3hrs/50GB, I was very happy with the speed. The thing looks cool and is quiet. Only complaint is that it only comes in silver :)
Dont buy an external HD, build your own! Pair this with an inexpensive HD and have a bootable drive at the ready.
