Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Macally Audio and Video Cable for iPod classic 4G, 5G, 5.5G (White)Customer Review: Does NOT work with new iPods, like 3rd gen iPod nano ! Summary: 1 Stars
It's not enough to say "for iPod" anymore. The new iPods that came out in September 2007 are different in many ways. This cable will NOT work for a 3rd generation iPod nano. The reason is that you cannot set "tv out" to On on an iPod nano unless the proper cable is plugged into the dock connector. Plugging a cable into the headphone jack (which is where this cable goes) will not allow you to change the "tv out" setting. For more info about this bad decision by Apple, just google < ipod nano "tv out" setting >, and read about "TV Out locked in new iPod classic and nano". Yes, apparently this cable will not work with the new iPod classic, either. The cable that works is apparently the one that Apple will sell you for $50.00. Yup, FIFTY.
Customer Review: Buyer Beware Summary: 1 Stars
I got very excited when I learned about this cable because my Ipod classic and I are conjoined twins. I even signed up for text updates so I could know exactly when it would be delivered. I tore off the brown packaging like a kid at Christmas and raced for the TV. I anxiously plugged one end into my dear Ipod while matching the connectors to the TV. I found a video, changed the output settings and to my surprise nothing happened. I searched the internet and tried to find a solution, but none of the "sure things" worked. In the end I purchased a new cable (through Amazon of course) that works like a dream. Anyone who invested money in a newer model Ipod should invest in the slightly more expensive cable because your Ipod's worth it!
Customer Review: Ignore bad reviews indicating this does not work Summary: 5 Stars
Those folks obviously did not take the time to read ipod use instructions for video output or perhaps need to apply a firmware or software update to the ipod itself. Omission of any of those things could cause the ipod to not function properly. This is not the fault of the cable. A cable is a cable. Period. I have generation 4 and 5 ipods, 60gb and 80gb. It works with both. Even works for photos! Works beautifully and it is practically FREE! I bought 3 of them and have enjoyed video from ipod on TV's here, there and everywhere. Was not able to use it in a hotel once as the video input for the TV was disabled. Otherwise, it is something a 10 year old could use ( if they read the instructions! )
Customer Review: Good for classic ipod 80GB Summary: 5 Stars
It is important to know whether your ipod uses the headphone jack or the dock connector to output video. Look on apple's website for supported/available accessories- should give you an idea, sometimes you can't trust a third party product description. Once you are sure, this cable works great; it is well constructed, not cheap feeling and does the job well. Video and audio quality are great, but keep in mind you will only get 320x240 resolution video. This is a limitation of the ipod classic, not the cable. Don't waste your time if you have an HDTV, the picture will be very pixelated, but on my old regular tv, it doesn't look too bad. I don't use it much but it works and is dirt cheap!
Customer Review: Ignore preceding review telling you to ignore reviews like these. Summary: 3 Stars
If you have a newer generation iPod, forget these cables. The problem is that neither this cable nor the twenty dollar one offered by Apple--regardless of how much you fool with the settings of the iPod--will project the image from newer generation iPods (the Nano 3g, for example) unto a television screen or large monitor. Apple has confirmed as much in answer to my questions. At present the only AV cable capable of transmitting the visual signal of the newest iPods is the composite or component AV cable with dock connector made by Apple (approx. 50 bucks). At least Macally, unlike other manufacturers, shows awareness of this limitation in their description of this product.
