Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech mm50 Portable Speaker System for iPod (White)

Customer Review: Great Sound - Some Flaws
Summary: 4 Stars

Without question the best speakers I have found for the iPod - without paying way too much for them - and I have tested a few. If you are looking for good sound and ease of use, look no further.

Most of the reviews here are on the mark, and these speakers are great value for money. I really like using these, but I wanted to mention some points to anyone looking to buy these Logitechs.

I would give this product 5 stars if it would be possible to fit the power cord in the (very nice) carrying case. It seems it would have been easy to use the space where the iPod sits to accomodate the power cord. Also, there is a nifty light indicator that reflects the battery status, but after a few weeks of using the battery (and recharging it as needed) it will no longer hold any significant charge, and I have to keep the machine plugged in all the time.

The weird interaction with the volume control is a nuisance, but doesn't really affect enjoying these speakers. I greatly appreciate the extra line in, so that I can have the iPod close by and the speakers a little further away.

All in all it could be a better (perfect?!) product, but it is still a good buy and these speakers have everything I was looking for.

Customer Review: Good Sound but a Few Shortcomings
Summary: 4 Stars

The Good:
-Very convenient: a great way to use your iPod.
-A good value relative to other similar products.
-Charges iPod when included AC adapter is used.
-Decent sound volume and quality.
-Battery Powered with reasonable life (except for discharge problem mentioned below).
-Compact and easily portable although use of AC charger is often required.

The Bad:
-Batteries are not replaceable.
-Remote control is somewhat unresponsive; works only within about 6 feet.
-Storage case is semi-worthless as it does not accommodate iPod or included AC charger.

The Ugly:
-Battery usage, unit storage, and portability are limited by the "Spontaneous Battery Discharge" problem: for no reason, unit will turn itself on and drain battery when sitting idle. Based on my experience in contacting Logitech technical support, there is no fix for this. If left alone for a couple of days, the batteries are almost always dead, so be sure to keep it plugged in.

Overall: Even with its shortcomings, the price of the MM50 makes it a good value. I would buy it again as I use mine every day. I would have rated 5 stars instead of 4 if not for the Spontaneous Battery Discharge problem.

Customer Review: Very superior sound quality, battery life is a little suspect.
Summary: 4 Stars

I have owned this stereo system of 2 and a half years now, and because I am still giving this a 4 star review, you should know basically where I stand, albeit with 1 objection.

This speakers are amazing for the most part, in that it gives excellent sound, it radiates and fills a room marvelously, and is compact and stylish. It has a button to push so that it creates a more surrounded sound, and my guess is that option uses more battery. The sound is certainly better with this function turned on, so I would recommend using it, but this is where I get a little dissapointed. The battery life just doesn't seem to last as long as I would want it too. It does last a good 2 hours of constant playing which is good I hear, but after listening to music, it just seems like such a short time. It also takes almost as long to charge it back up.

So there you have it, this is a solid, reliable, excellent quality stereo system for your Ipod, but the battery life is less than spectacular for me, and the charging is less than exciting. I also wish the spacing was a little bigger so you didn't have to take off the case, if you have one, to play it.

Customer Review: Problems with 3G Nano
Summary: 2 Stars

The product claims to be compatible with "new Video Nanos" - this, however, is quite a misleading statement. Yes, the 3G does in fact connect to the dock and play music, however, the remote control functionality is crippled and no adapter is provided to provide a snug fit into the dock. The instructions are lacking, and the website simply states that the 3G should be connected through the auxiliary jack in the back of the dock (using the headphone connection on the IPod). I in no way consider this to be "supporting" the 3G! In theory, I could connect my 1992 Sony Walkman to the auxiliary jack as well, but this is not why I purchased a dock! I expect the system to be able to properly charge my IPod and control it by remote. The remote control functionality was erratic and effectively useless - I attempted to change the battery with no avail. Volume control and power worked correctly, however, navigating through the songs worked only on occasion. As a redeeming feature, the quality of music was relatively good considering the size of the unit. However, due to the numerous problems I encountered, I will be returning the product to Amazon asap!

Customer Review: Almost very nice
Summary: 3 Stars

These speakers are decent speakers and sound pretty good. They are a nice size and look great (especially in black). The sound however lacks a crisp high-end and almost sounds muffled at high frequencies. My JBL Sound-Stage speakers have much better sound at higher frequencies (but unfortunately don't have nearly as good bass response--if only they could be combined).

What really annoys me about this speakers set though is that the transformer doesn't fit in the carrying case. It is so close to being a nice tidy design, but just doesn't quite fit. IF you could put the transformer where the ipod goes it would have been great but the transformer is just a bit too big to do that. With this one design issue, I lost much respect for the product.

The third design issue is that the remote control is an infrared optical product. The JBL on-stage II uses RF frequency meaning you don't have to have a line-of-site to the front of the speakers. The RF technology that JBL uses is a better design than the mm50's remote.

I'll look forward to the next generation of this product once they fix a few little things.
