Customer Review: Just what I wanted
Summary: 4 Stars

I received an Ipod mini for my birthday, but being as busy as I am, and plus the fact that my stereo is in an awkward place making it difficult to attach the ipod to, I found myself not using it as much as I had hoped. So I began searching for a portable speaker system for my ipod. Here is what I wanted:

-Good sound
-Recharges Ipod
-Compatible w/ mini, nano, full sized (in case I upgrade later)
-ability to sync while in system
-fairly portable

After researching and reading professional and consumer reviews for several days, I settled on the mm50, and I have not been disappointed at all. First of all, it has great sound, probably indistinguishable from the Bose for most people. The mm50 can get very loud and exhibits little distortion. It recharges the Ipod, and the ipod can be synced while in the cradle. The mm50 is actually smaller than I mentally pictured it from all the pics i saw. It is very portable-- and it has an internal rechargeable battery, an excellent feature that enables me or my wife to move it to another room for several hours at a time.
Now for some bonus features. Firstly, it is a great looking system. Taking cues from Apple, it is white, simple, and functions well. Secondly, it comes with a remote. Again, the remote is simple, white, and goes well w/ the system. However, I agree with other reviewers-- the remote does not work well when not within 20 feet and/or not facing the unit head on. Would have given a full 5 stars if this worked better.

In conclusion, an excellent speaker system for any ipod. Great sound, great features, but poor remote functioning. Highly recommened. By the way, mine shipped w/ an nano adapter.

Customer Review: good sound, bad machine
Summary: 1 Stars

I love my iPod, and wanted a way to listen to it other than using earbuds. Did a lot of online research, and this product was a good combination of sound quality, portability, and affordability. So I ordered one, it came, and worked great for 2 days. Good sound, nice design, liked the remote, and it was fun to wake up to my own music. The one negative I noticed was that the charger doesn't fit in the carrying case. Then, after 2 days of fun, the Logitech wouldn't charge the iPod (no blue light which means charging, plus the charging symbol didn't appear on the iPod screen), only the purple light, which means the Logitech is drawing on its battery. It drained the iPod battery, even when the Logitech recharger was plugged in, so not cool! I returned it to Amazon for a replacement. It came, and worked fine for a little over a month. I went away on a trip, left the iPod in the Logitech cradle, put the whole thing in the carrying case, and put it in the closet. When I came back 5 days later, the battery on the iPod was completely drained and the Logitech wouldn't charge. No blue light. I charged the iPod, put it in the Logitech cradle (after trying to recharge the Logitech as well, again no blue light), and the Logitech started draining the iPod battery as it was playing. In addition, the red light lit up on the Logitech; this normally comes on when the Logitech is being shut off or when the battery needs a recharge. Don't know or care if it's the circuit board, the rechargeable battery, or both, but I'm really disappointed with this product - not with Amazon! always excellent customer service. I'm returning it for an 80% refund, and will be looking at another brand to fulfill my desire to play my iPod out loud!

Customer Review: Excellent Sound
Summary: 5 Stars

With my job, I have the opportunity to sample a lot of docking stations. If you have the room, the Altec Lansing IM7 is the best (it's that big tubular looking thing, and it packs a punch). For more portable applications, this Logitech mm50 is BY FAR the best system out there for the size.

You can easily spend more on other portable systems, such as smaller Altec Lansing systems, but they do not even begin to compare. Great sound- deep base and crisp highs- and yes, it's loud. I measured over 120dB (C weighted) next to the speakers. That is a measurement of loudness SPL (sound pressure level), and 120dB is the equivalent of a rock concert (keep in mind, this is right next to the speakers). The other systems I have tested do not come close. You can drive these speakers into distortion, but with that power there is no reason to crank it all the way up.

Integrated LiION battery with AC adapter. IR remote (limited range). Switchable 3D sound expansion (makes the music appear to come from speakers that are further apart). Push button up/down volume control. Class D digital amplifier (battery lasts much longer). Has a jack on back for any MP3 player, or just dock your iPod in it, and the buttons on the unit (and the IR remote) control the iPod! It also has a second connector on the back for the iPod sync cable, so you can dock it and bring up iTunes on your PC, and be fully connected.

Interesting note: you can see four speakers in the mm50, but only two are active. The other two are passive cones, which, combined with the case cavity, is perfectly tuned to deliver FAR more sound than what you would expect. Try the mm50 for yourself, you will be very pleased.

Customer Review: great speakers by being realistic
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the speakers for my 1 year old son about a month and a half ago. He goes to sleep listening to his music and I needed a solution for traveling. All his music are on our Ipod, I just needed to find speakers. I researched various websites for several days, read reviews from customers and experts, compared them in the store etc. I decided for the mm50 and have not regretted it so far. I have no problem with battery life, they easily work for the stated 7 hours which gives me plenty of time before I can recharge them again. Once charged up, they stay so until I run them empty. Some customers complained about the volume, I don't. I never once needed to turn the volume all the way up. My baby needs a low volume to fall asleep although there is always a sound machine going on to block out outside noises. We listened to it in the car too, and when we are at home I use it in my bedroom to listen to books. Our bedroom is huge, and some of the bookreaders have a tiny voice but I was always perfectely satisfied with the volume. If you like to listen to really loud music you may have an issue with the volume, othervise there shoudn't be a problem with it. But then again, you should get more realistic considering the size of the speakers, and the fact that these are portable speakers, mostly for traveling where you don't want to disturb others with a loud volume anyway. The sound is very clear, it is even more enjoyable when you turn the 3D on. I like the remote and never had a problem operating it as long there wasn't anything between the control and the speakers to block the infrared. If you are a realistic person, these speakers may exceed your expectations.

Customer Review: One for the road

My mom wanted some portable iPod speakers for her birthday, so I bought her these. I had a chance to listen to them a fair bit this summer, and in general I liked them. This unit is conveniently sized for travel, it looks nice, and it's easy even for a technophobe like my mother to use. It seems to be pretty rugged - my mom took it on a fairly long trip and it was unaffected by standard jostling. Until she drops it off a balcony, there's no telling how it will hold up to more extreme handling. Its adapters snugly accomodated Mom's iPod Nano and my video iPod. The sound was pretty good, but it's because of the sound that I won't buy one for myself.

My mom likes Latin/country music, and that type of music sounds just fine on these speakers. It sounded good at low and at high volumes, and at high volume the sound pretty much filled the family room/kitchen area of my parents' house (about 1500 square feet, high ceilings). I like classical and opera. They sounded okay at low volume; at high volume the distortion made me think my ears were going to spurt blood.

If your tastes run to easy listening and pop, these speakers will work well for you, and their portability, style, and ease of use are top notch. If your tastes run to music with wider dynamic range (classical, for instance), they probably aren't your best choice for home use, though they wouldn't be bad for travel or office (where you don't usually listen to music on high volume anyway). For home use I'm plugging my iPod into my home sound system; for my office I'll probably buy a set of Klipsch speakers instead.
