Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech mm50 Portable Speaker System for iPod (White)Customer Review: Excellent sound and quality, lots of nice feature, good value Summary: 5 Stars
My fiance loves to listen to music around the house, and since I was getting her a 4 GB Nano for Christmas I thought this would be a great accessory to compliment it.
I was in Best Buy comparing the models they had on display and there were two units that stood out head and shoulders above the rest with respect to sound quality - the Bose SoundDock for nearly $300, and the Logitech MM50 for half the price. Naturally you'd assume that Logitech has cut some corners, or lowered quality to come in with a competing product at half the price...for the life of me I couldn't find any! I know Bose makes excellent quality AV products and they have always been, and still are, quite revered by me. So I'm by no means bashing Bose, but the MM50 is a serious contender and in my opinion can't be beat given the value. Read on...
The quality of the unit stands out the minute you start to pull it out of the box. It is very well built and has high quality materials. You can tell by the mass that the drivers are high quality and have large magnets inside which is important for delivering quality sound. As you can see in the photo the unit is nice and flat and has retractable legs that extend out from the rear when in use. For travel you can fold the legs in and place it into the included travel case. The carry case is quite slim and can fit into carry on luggage easily.
The MM50 really shines when you power it up and drop your ipod into it. I was amazed out how full the sound spectrum was, and how deep the bass was for such a small unit. The sound quality is very good and is even suitable for medium to large rooms such as a living room.
The unit also comes with a rechargeable internal battery that provides about 7-8 hours worth of play time. The battery charges while you have the unit plugged into the wall. One drawback on the battery is that it is not removable/replaceable - so if you're on a long trip such as a camping trip and you have no place to plug it in, you can not replace the battery.
The remote control is functional and allows you to power it on and off, play/pause, fast forward/rewind and skip tracks forward/backward. The remote is very useful, however you need to point it directly at the unit and you also must be well aligned with the front of the unit. It doesn't like it if you try to use it from an angle since the sensor is somewhat recessed into the unit.
The power adapter also leaves something to be desired. It's rather large and kind of oddly shaped. An inline power adapter I think would be much cleaner.
Bottom Line - this unit has excellent sound and is of high quality. For the price I don't think you can beat it.
Customer Review: Excellent Value-for-money Summary: 4 Stars
I was seriously considering getting the Bose SoundDock; my friend has it and sounds great. It's obvious problem is portability and since I travel a lot the Bose was not the most practical option. I was about to buy the JBL On-Stage until I came across the Logitech MM50. Apparently JBL had to recall some of their speakers and that does not augur well for the image of the product even if they claim they have solved the problem.
The mm50 is a well-designed, well thought-out product. Right out of the box, there is a black carrying case in which the speakers and its remote easily fit. I've found that on most products the battery life is over-stated. Surprisingly, this is not the case with the mm50. Besides the battery (which the Bose and JBL lack) makes this a winner.
But of-course, the key factor is sound. Admittedly, the sound is not as good as the Bose. My collection of Bach and Mozart is rather limited - if you listen exclusively or mostly to classical music, perhaps you can sacrifice the portability and get the Bose or even the new Klipsch. The sound is clear and for such a small set of speakers really loud. Both my immediate neighbours have asked me to stop playing music at 5 am.
For this price, I was kind of surprised to find a remote. The remote is strictly serviceable and by know means cutting-edge. They seem to have placed the sensor in a not-so-smart position. Perhaps they added the remote as an after-thought.
Of course, it also charges the Ipod and you can sync it directly with the PC through the speakers itself. Another nice touch is the ability of add another music player if you want - like ur DiscMan or another MP3 player. The cables for these are not provided, but you can get a regular line in cable for like 2 bucks at a RadioShack.
It also came with all sorts of holders to make sure your Ipod fits in - I have a 3G and a 5G Video - and have tried a friend's Ipod Mini. All fit and work correctly. I am pretty sure the Nano also works - but that should be double-checked.
On the cons side - while it does look cool, it is not as uber as the Klipsch and the Bose. I personally never liked the way the On-stage looked (seemed a bit corny) but that is relative to one's tastes.
Customer Review: Avoid these speakers! (Plus Logitech vs. Altec Lansing) Summary: 2 Stars
First and foremost, I'm a real consumer not a paid reviewer who is going to gush about speakers. So here it is, straight-forward, short and sweet:
Logitech MM50
Pros: Amazing, amazing sound quality for such a little device. It even has a "surround sound" mode that really does make you feel like your listening to huge, high-end speakers.
Cons: The power button is easily depressed, meaning that when packed away and traveling, it can turn itself on (even their new models have this flaw). There is no switch or defined button to avoid this problem; it's definitely a design flaw. (Imagine the Ipod without the power lock on/off switch and you know what I mean.) Additionally, there is a built-in battery. That means you can't replace it (see google for all the people that have tried). The battery life is waaaay too short without being plugged in, so you can't take this to the beach, etc. to truly enjoy. Lastly, because of the power switch defect, the system runs it's battery out all the time, and without some juice in there the system doesn't work EVEN WHEN PLUGGED IN. You have to wait 15-30 mins, charge, and then use with the plug; not fun if you want music now.
The Logitech MM50 made me pull my hair for a year, but the only reprieve was the sweet sounds it made. Now, the battery is done for good, and I went out and upgraded to...
Altec Lansing inMotion IM 3
Pros: Very, very good sound. Not quite as good as the Logitech MM50, but barely noticeably different. It took me a while before I noticed some slight nuances in the sound quality, it's that close. Replaceable batteries!! That's right, you can buy your own batteries at the grocery store, even rechargable ones, put them in, hit the beach, park, whereever, and have great sound that lasts! Additionally, the system has TWO very defined on/off switches so the system can't accidently turn itself on. It's so simple yet genius compared to Logitech.
Cons: No "surround sound" feature. It hits base notes and others well, but you won't get overwhelmed with it's sound. It's still very impressive and slightly smaller than the Logitech MM50.
So there it is, good luck in you're buying!
Customer Review: Amazing Speakers Summary: 5 Stars
I give this set of speakers a rateing of five stars because they are better than my expectations of a high quality sound system. Some people said that the speakers didn't have enough bass but it has extremly great bass. It isn't the speakers that will shake your room but it has great bass for the size of the speakers. It totaly amazed me. The 3D stereo sound dosn't do much for most songs but it will give more of the guitar sounds to the music. With it off it is kind of muffled. I wish it had a bigger opening because I want to be able to put my Ipod in the dock with the case on but it will just fit the Ipod with out a case on. My sister has the same speakers and it fits the Ipod Nano perfectly. It has pretty good high ends and a great midrange and a good low end. It is perfect for a large room but dosn't have enough power to give a party music. It does have a large amount of volume. On half power it is fine to listin to. When you crank it up you can get alot out these little speakers. I heard the speakers at Best Buy and I turned them up all the way and thought they where not loud enough. I was wrong. The speakers are actually pretty loud. The remote works great for On/Off, volume, and 3D stereo, but it has trouble with the forward and backward buttons. You have to push it a couple of times to get it to work. The case is very durable and can fit the speakers and the remote with ease. the rechargable battery is also a great feature that I found on no other speakers. I can pull it from the wire and it will run for quite a while. The company says that It will go about 10 hours with the battery. It isn't hard to belive that. I spent quite along time useing it and it didn't say low battery. If I could do it again I would buy these speakers. One of the best speakers out there. I can compare the sound to the Bose Sound Dock! Try these speakers you will not be disapointed
Pros: afordable, light, durable, great sound, looks great, rechargeable battery, and remote
Cons: hard to get to skip forward and backward
Sum it up: Great and affordable speakers
Customer Review: Great Little Portable Speaker Summary: 4 Stars
I got an 80G Ipod for Christmas and I was looking for an external speaker. I am not really one to walk around with an ear bud in my ear, but I like to hear music. Also, I was going on a cruise and wanted to bring music to share on deck, our balcony, etc. I looked at the various models and was really looking for something that was small enough to go in a suitcase, sounded good, charged my ipod, could work with power or batteries, had a rechargable battery, and wasn't more than about $100. There were very few that met that criteria.
I was very please when I plugged my ipod in to the speaker. I think the sound is great. It is no home stereo, but it puts out a really nice, full sound. I wish it could go a little louder, but again it is not a home stereo. I was fantastic on the cruise. I took it up to the sun deck and had it next to my chair. I also played it out on the balcony. It was perfect. I would play it for awhile and then charge it at night.
The only cons I can think of are
1. Volume - already mentioned. It's good enough for a room, but is not going to rock the house.
2. Rechargable batteries cannot be replaced. That is kind of a bummer. It would be nice if you could have a few sets of batteries and you could charge them if you were going to be away from power for a day or two. Or just to rotate the batteries. And I am not sure what you do when the battery won't hold a charge anymore. But even with this negative, it beats the other alternative of good old throw away batteries. That would be a pain and be expensive.
3. Travel case doesn't have a spot for the power cord. Minor thing, but the travel case is a nice little case that zips around the speaker and also holds the remote....there is no room for the power cord. Not a huge problem, but it would have been nice to have a spot for it.
Am I happy with the product - definitely
Would I buy it again - absolutely
Does it do what I wanted it to do - yes
Hope this
